Surprise

Chapter 6: The Daughter Hidden in the Shadows

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Daniel Sterling stared at the woman standing at the entrance of the ballroom.

Claire Sterling.

The name sounded impossible.

Another sibling.

Another secret.

Another piece of his family history that had been buried from him.

He looked at Lily.

Then Alexander.

Then back at Claire.

Three strangers.

Three people who carried the same blood.

Three people who had been hidden from one another for most of their lives.

Daniel’s voice came out barely above a whisper.

“Who are you?””

The woman stepped forward slowly.

Her eyes never left his.

“I already told you.””

She swallowed.

“I’m Claire.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

The word came out instantly.

Not because he didn’t believe her.

Because he couldn’t.

His mind had reached its limit.

Twenty years of believing his family story was simple had collapsed in a single night.

His parents.

His sister.

His brother.

Now another sister.

It was too much.

Claire seemed to understand.

“I know how this sounds.””

Daniel laughed quietly.

“Do you?””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

Her voice trembled.

“Because I spent my whole life wondering why my own family erased me.””

The room became silent.

Lily looked at her.

“You’re really my sister?””

Claire looked at her.

Tears filled her eyes.

“Yes.””

Lily stepped back slightly.

“Then why didn’t you find me?””

That question hurt more than any accusation.

Claire lowered her head.

“Because I didn’t know you existed.””

Daniel watched her carefully.

“Explain.””

Claire looked at the letter still in his hand.

“Your father left instructions.””

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“What instructions?””

“That if something happened to him, certain people had to be protected.””

“Protected from who?””

Claire looked toward Eleanor Hayes.

The older woman immediately looked away.

Daniel noticed.

Again.

Everyone seemed to know pieces of the truth except him.

Claire continued.

“From Richard Hayes.””

Victoria closed her eyes.

Her father’s name had become a ghost haunting every room.

Daniel walked closer.

“Start from the beginning.””

Claire took a deep breath.

“Your grandfather had a secret.””

Daniel frowned.

“What secret?””

“He had a daughter before your father.””

Everyone looked confused.

Claire continued.

“My grandmother was never part of the Sterling family publicly. She was hidden because of the damage it could cause to the family reputation.””

Daniel stared.

“So?””

“So my mother was born outside the family name.””

She touched her chest.

“And I was born years later.””

Daniel slowly understood.

“Your mother was my father’s half-sister.””

Claire nodded.

“Yes.””

The room became quiet.

“Which means…”

Daniel stopped.

Claire finished the sentence.

“I’m part of the Sterling family.””

Alexander looked at Daniel.

“Our family was bigger than we knew.””

Daniel looked down.

All his life, he had believed his parents were honest people.

Now he discovered they had hidden children, hidden relatives, and hidden secrets.

But there was one question that mattered.

“Why did my parents hide you?””

Claire’s expression changed.

“They didn’t.””

Daniel looked surprised.

“What?””

“They tried to protect me.””

She walked closer.

“My existence was discovered by Richard Hayes.””

Daniel’s face hardened.

Claire nodded.

“He realized my connection to the Sterling family could expose things he didn’t want revealed.””

“What things?””

“The inheritance.””

Daniel frowned.

“The inheritance?””

Claire looked at him.

“Your grandfather’s original trust.””

Alexander stepped forward.

“The oldest child.””

Claire nodded.

“Exactly.””

Daniel felt a chill.

“Alexander.””

Alexander looked away.

Claire continued.

“When Richard discovered Alexander existed, he realized the family trust could change everything.””

Daniel looked at Alexander.

“You were supposed to inherit the company.””

Alexander nodded.

“Yes.””

Claire looked at Daniel.

“But when Richard discovered there was another older family member, everything changed.””

Daniel stared.

“Me?””

She nodded.

“You weren’t the oldest anymore.””

The words felt strange.

Daniel had never cared about being first.

But someone else had.

Someone had killed for it.

“So Richard wanted all of us gone.””

Claire’s eyes filled with sadness.

“He wanted the entire bloodline erased.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Victoria suddenly stepped forward.

“Stop.””

Everyone looked at her.

Her voice shook.

“You’re making my father sound like a monster.””

Daniel stared.

“After everything tonight, you still defend him?””

Victoria looked at him.

“No.””

Her eyes filled.

“I’m saying there are things you don’t know.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“That’s your favorite sentence.””

Victoria looked down.

“My father wasn’t the only person involved.””

The room froze.

Daniel’s expression changed.

“What?””

Victoria looked terrified.

Not because she was caught.

Because she was about to reveal something she had buried.

“My father had help.””

Eleanor immediately turned.

“Victoria.””

Her voice was sharp.

“Enough.””

Daniel looked at Eleanor.

“Help from who?””

Nobody answered.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Who helped him?””

Eleanor’s face became pale.

Then Claire spoke.

“I know.””

Everyone turned.

Claire looked at Eleanor.

“Because I saw her.””

The room went silent.

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“Who?””

Claire took a breath.

“Your mother.””

Daniel stopped.

The sentence didn’t make sense.

“My mother died.””

Claire nodded.

“I know.””

“Then how could she help him?””

Claire looked at him.

“Because she wasn’t helping him.””

Daniel waited.

“She was trying to stop him.””

A wave of confusion crossed the room.

Claire continued.

“Your mother discovered what Richard was doing.””

Daniel looked at the letter.

“She knew?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t she tell us?””

Claire’s expression became painful.

“Because Richard had already started controlling everything.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

He looked frustrated.

“My mother would never let someone threaten her family.””

Claire looked at him.

“She didn’t.””

A pause.

“She fought.””

Daniel felt his throat tighten.

“What happened?””

Claire looked toward the dark window.

“The night of the accident wasn’t supposed to kill everyone.””

The room went completely silent.

Alexander stepped forward.

“What?””

Claire looked at him.

“Richard wanted your father.””

Daniel froze.

“He only wanted Dad?””

Claire nodded.

“The plan was to make your father disappear and take control of the company.””

Alexander’s face changed.

“But the crash killed Mom too.””

“Yes.””

Claire whispered.

“That wasn’t planned.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

For years, he had imagined his parents dying instantly.

A tragic accident.

A terrible moment.

Now he had to imagine something worse.

They had been targeted.

They had fought.

And they had lost.

“What happened to Lily?””

Claire looked at the young woman.

“Your mother knew Richard would come after the children.””

Lily touched her locket.

“She gave me this.””

Claire nodded.

“She gave Lily the evidence.””

Daniel looked at the necklace.

“And Alexander?””

“She sent him away with someone she trusted.””

Alexander looked confused.

“Who?””

Claire looked at Eleanor.

The older woman closed her eyes.

Daniel immediately noticed.

“You know.””

Eleanor didn’t answer.

Daniel’s voice became cold.

“Eleanor.””

The woman finally looked up.

“I helped your mother.””

Nobody expected that.

Victoria stared at her.

“You never told me.””

Eleanor’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because I was trying to protect you.””

Victoria looked hurt.

“Protect me from what?””

“From becoming like your father.””

The words struck hard.

Daniel watched Victoria.

For the first time, she looked like someone discovering her own family’s darkness.

Eleanor continued.

“Your father wasn’t just stealing money.””

She looked at Daniel.

“He was destroying anyone who stood in his way.””

Daniel’s voice lowered.

“What happened to my mother?””

Eleanor hesitated.

Then answered.

“She survived the accident.””

Everyone froze.

Daniel stared.

“What?””

Alexander looked shocked.

“That’s impossible.””

Eleanor shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“She survived.””

Daniel felt the room spinning.

His mother.

Alive?

Impossible.

“She was taken away before the authorities arrived.””

“By who?””

Eleanor looked at the floor.

“By Richard.””

Daniel’s anger exploded.

“Where is she?””

Nobody answered.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Where is my mother?””

Eleanor looked at him with tears.

“I don’t know.””

The answer crushed him.

After everything.

After twenty years.

Still no answer.

Then Claire suddenly looked toward the hallway.

Her expression changed.

“Wait.””

Daniel turned.

“What?””

She looked frightened.

“I recognize that sound.””

Everyone listened.

At first, nothing.

Then they heard it.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Approaching.

Someone was walking through the mansion.

Marcus reached for his radio.

“Security team, report.””

Static.

No response.

Daniel looked around.

Every exit was guarded.

Nobody should have been able to enter.

Then the ballroom doors opened.

A man stepped inside.

Older.

Gray hair.

Calm expression.

Everyone froze.

Because Daniel knew him.

Everyone in the room knew him.

He was the man who had stood beside Daniel’s father twenty years ago.

The man whose name appeared in every hidden document.

Richard Hayes.

Victoria’s father.

The man who was supposed to be dead.

Daniel stared.

“You’re alive.””

Richard smiled.

“Yes.””

He looked around the room.

At Alexander.

At Lily.

At Claire.

Then finally at Daniel.

“I see you found everyone.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You killed my parents.””

Richard didn’t deny it.

Instead, he smiled sadly.

“No, Daniel.””

He looked at the three siblings.

“I saved you from the truth.””

Nobody moved.

Richard reached into his coat.

He pulled out an old photograph.

A photograph of Daniel’s family.

But there was something different.

Someone standing beside them.

A child.

A child Daniel had never seen.

Richard placed the photograph on the table.

Then he whispered:

“You still don’t know what your father did.””

Daniel stared at the image.

Because the child in the photograph wasn’t Alexander.

Wasn’t Lily.

Wasn’t Claire.

It was another child.

A fourth sibling.

May you like

And written on the back of the photograph were six words:

*“The first Sterling child is alive.””*
