Chapter 4: The Man Behind the Locked Door
Daniel Sterling stared at the photograph on the tablet until his eyes burned.
The man standing outside the mansion gates looked impossible.
Same dark hair.
Same sharp jawline.
Same eyes.
His eyes.
For twenty years, Daniel believed he was the only surviving son of the Sterling family.
Now, within a single night, he had discovered a sister he thought was dead and a brother who had been erased from history.
His entire identity had become a question.
Lily stood beside him, staring at the photograph.
“Daniel…”
He looked at her.
Her voice was barely above a whisper.
“He looks like you.””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Because that was the truth he was trying to avoid.
The man in the photograph wasn’t a stranger.
He was family.
The security chief, Marcus Bell, stepped forward.
“Mr. Sterling, we searched the front gate cameras.””
Daniel looked at him.
“And?””
Marcus hesitated.
“That’s the problem.””
“What problem?””
“The man wasn’t recorded entering the property.””
Daniel frowned.
“What?””
Marcus turned the tablet toward him.
“The photo was taken from inside the estate.””
A cold silence filled the office.
Daniel looked at the image again.
The man wasn’t standing outside the gates.
He was standing near the old fountain behind the east garden.
A restricted area.
An area only family members and senior security staff could access.
“How long ago was this taken?””
Marcus checked.
“Seven minutes ago.””
Daniel immediately stood.
“Lock down the mansion.””
The guards moved.
“Nobody leaves.””
Victoria, who had remained silent, suddenly looked terrified.
Daniel noticed.
“Why do you look scared?””
She shook her head.
“I’m not.””
“You are.””
Victoria looked away.
Daniel walked closer.
“You knew Alexander was alive.””
“No.””
“Then why are you afraid?””
She didn’t answer.
That was becoming her pattern.
Every time Daniel asked the one question that mattered, she disappeared behind silence.
Daniel turned toward Marcus.
“Find him.””
“Yes, sir.””
The security team rushed out.
Daniel followed.
But before he reached the door, Lily grabbed his arm.
“Daniel.””
He stopped.
“What?””
She looked worried.
“Be careful.””
He softened slightly.
“Why?””
“Because whoever erased your brother from your family didn’t want him found.””
Her words stayed with him.
Because she was right.
Someone had spent twenty years hiding Alexander Sterling.
And tonight, someone wanted Daniel to find him.
The east garden of the Sterling estate had not changed much since Daniel was a child.
The old stone pathways remained.
The tall oak trees still stood along the edge of the property.
The fountain where he and Lily used to play still flowed quietly beneath the moonlight.
But tonight, everything felt different.
Like the garden was holding a secret.
Daniel walked with Marcus and two guards behind him.
Every step brought back memories.
His childhood.
His parents.
Lily running through the grass.
A life that disappeared in one night.
Then Marcus stopped.
“Mr. Sterling.””
Daniel looked ahead.
Someone was standing beside the fountain.
A man.
Tall.
Still.
Watching him.
The guards immediately moved forward.
But Daniel raised his hand.
“Wait.””
The man looked exactly like the photograph.
Older than Daniel.
But unmistakably connected.
For several seconds, neither of them spoke.
Then the man smiled sadly.
“You got taller.””
Daniel froze.
The words weren’t threatening.
They were familiar.
Too familiar.
“What did you say?””
The man looked at the fountain.
“You used to hide behind that fountain whenever Mom tried to make you eat vegetables.””
Daniel felt his stomach tighten.
Nobody knew that.
Nobody except his family.
The man looked back at him.
“And Lily used to tell on you because she thought vegetables made you stronger.””
Daniel couldn’t breathe.
“Who are you?””
The man stepped closer.
“My name is Alexander.””
The world went silent.
Daniel stared.
“You’re supposed to be dead.””
Alexander gave a bitter smile.
“I know.””
Daniel’s hands tightened.
“Why?””
“Because that’s what they wanted everyone to believe.””
“Who?””
Alexander looked toward the mansion.
Then at Victoria.
She had followed them outside.
And the moment she saw him, her face changed.
Alexander noticed.
“You brought her here?””
Daniel turned.
“You know Victoria?””
Alexander laughed quietly.
“That’s the first question you ask?””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“Answer me.””
Alexander looked at Victoria.
“I know exactly who she is.””
Victoria stepped forward.
“Alexander, listen—”
“No.””
His voice changed.
The pain underneath it was obvious.
“You don’t get to pretend anymore.””
Daniel looked between them.
“What is going on?””
Alexander stared at Victoria.
“She knows why I disappeared.””
Victoria’s face went pale.
Daniel felt anger rising.
“You told me you didn’t know everything.””
“I don’t.””
Alexander laughed.
“That’s convenient.””
Victoria looked hurt.
“You don’t understand.””
“No.””
Alexander shook his head.
“You don’t understand.””
The guards looked uncomfortable.
Daniel stepped between them.
“Both of you stop.””
He looked at Alexander.
“You disappeared twenty years ago.””
Alexander nodded.
“Yes.””
“Where did you go?””
Alexander looked down.
“That’s a long story.””
“We have time.””
Alexander looked at the mansion.
“No, we don’t.””
Daniel frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Alexander walked closer.
“It means the same people who took me are still watching.””
A sudden sound interrupted them.
A sharp crack.
Everyone froze.
Marcus immediately pulled Daniel back.
“Down!””
The guards moved around them.
Lily screamed from the doorway.
“Daniel!””
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then silence returned.
Daniel looked around.
“What happened?””
Marcus scanned the area.
“Someone tried to scare us.””
“Someone?””
Marcus pointed toward the trees.
A small device lay on the ground.
Not a weapon.
A surveillance device.
Daniel looked at Alexander.
Someone was watching them.
Someone had been listening.
Alexander’s expression became dark.
“They know I’m here.””
Daniel stared.
“Who?””
Alexander looked at him.
“The person who killed our parents.””
The words hit like a storm.
Daniel stepped closer.
“You know who caused the accident?””
Alexander nodded slowly.
“I always knew.””
“Then tell me.””
Alexander looked toward the mansion.
“Not here.””
Daniel’s patience disappeared.
“You have spent twenty years hiding while I searched for Lily.””
Alexander looked wounded.
“You think I wanted that?””
“Then explain.””
Alexander took a deep breath.
“When our parents died, it wasn’t an accident.””
Daniel already suspected it.
But hearing it aloud made it real.
“What happened?””
Alexander looked at Lily.
Then back at Daniel.
“Our father discovered someone was stealing from the Sterling company.””
Daniel frowned.
“Who?””
Alexander’s voice dropped.
“Someone close to him.””
Victoria looked away.
Daniel noticed.
Again.
“Who?””
Alexander didn’t answer.
Instead, he reached into his coat.
He pulled out a small black notebook.
Old.
Worn.
He handed it to Daniel.
“This belonged to Dad.””
Daniel opened it.
The pages were filled with handwritten notes.
Dates.
Names.
Financial records.
Then one name appeared repeatedly.
Richard Hayes.
Victoria’s father.
Daniel looked up.
“Your father?””
Alexander nodded.
“He wasn’t just the financial advisor.””
Daniel turned another page.
A sentence was written in bold.
*Richard Hayes discovered Alexander knew the truth.*
Daniel looked at Alexander.
“What truth?””
Alexander’s eyes filled with anger.
“That he wasn’t protecting the Sterling family.””
A pause.
“He was destroying it.””
Victoria stepped forward.
“That’s not true.””
Alexander looked at her.
“Then why did your father try to kill me?””
The entire garden went silent.
Daniel turned slowly.
“What?””
Victoria looked horrified.
“I didn’t know.””
Alexander laughed.
“You always say that.””
Daniel looked at Victoria.
“Explain.””
She shook her head.
“I swear, I didn’t know he was going to hurt anyone.””
Alexander’s voice became colder.
“But you knew he was hiding something.””
Victoria couldn’t deny it.
Daniel felt betrayed.
Not because Victoria knew Alexander.
Because she had spent months standing beside him while carrying pieces of his family’s destruction.
“Why did you come here tonight?””
Alexander looked at Daniel.
“Because I found out Lily was alive.””
Daniel froze.
“How?””
“Someone sent me the same message you received.””
Daniel looked confused.
“What message?””
Alexander pulled out his phone.
On the screen was the exact same sentence.
*You finally found Lily.*
Below it was another line.
*Now protect Daniel before he learns the truth.*
Daniel stared.
“Who sent it?””
Alexander shook his head.
“I don’t know.””
Then his phone buzzed.
Everyone looked.
A new message.
Alexander opened it.
His face changed instantly.
“What?””
Daniel stepped closer.
Alexander slowly turned the phone around.
The message contained only one sentence.
*“You should have stayed buried.””*
Then a photograph loaded.
A photograph taken inside Daniel’s office.
A photograph of Lily standing beside Daniel.
Taken minutes earlier.
Someone was inside the mansion.
Someone close enough to watch them.
Someone who knew everything.
And then Alexander whispered the words that made Daniel’s blood run cold.
“He’s here.””
Daniel looked toward the mansion.
“Who?””
Alexander stared into the darkness.
“The person who made sure our family died twenty years ago.””
A shadow moved behind the mansion window.
Just for a second.
Then disappeared.
But Daniel saw the face.
And he recognized it.
Because it was someone he trusted.
Someone who had been smiling beside him all night.
May you like
Victoria’s mother.
Eleanor Hayes.
