Surprise

Chapter 3: The Brother Nobody Knew

Daniel Sterling had spent twenty years searching for one missing person.

His sister.

His little sister Lily.

The girl who vanished the same night their parents died.

The girl whose empty bedroom had remained untouched in his childhood home because he could never accept that she was truly gone.

But now, standing in the middle of his engagement party with a mysterious note in his hand, Daniel discovered something that shattered everything he thought he knew.

Lily was not the only secret his family had buried.

There was another name.

Alexander Sterling.

A brother Daniel had never heard of.

He stared at the paper again.

The handwriting was uneven, almost rushed.

Like whoever wrote it had been afraid they wouldn’t have enough time.

“Ask Victoria about Alexander Sterling.””

The words burned into his mind.

Daniel looked up.

Victoria was watching him.

And she already knew.

That was the part that terrified him the most.

Not the note.

Not the missing security footage.

Not even the impossible revelation about another sibling.

Victoria knew the name.

“Daniel…”

Her voice was quiet.

Almost pleading.

He folded the paper slowly.

“Who is Alexander Sterling?””

The entire ballroom held its breath.

Victoria looked away.

That single movement told Daniel everything.

“You know him.””

She shook her head quickly.

“No.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Don’t lie to me again.””

The accusation hit harder than a shout.

Victoria’s face tightened.

“I never lied about loving you.””

Daniel gave a bitter laugh.

“Tonight you framed an innocent woman, hid information about my missing sister, and now you’re telling me you’re honest?””

Lily stood nearby, watching the woman who had tried to destroy her.

She looked hurt more than angry.

“Why did you do this to me?””

Victoria looked at her.

For a moment, something almost like guilt appeared on her face.

Then it disappeared.

“I didn’t know who you were.””

Lily’s voice trembled.

“But you knew enough to put a ring in my pocket.””

Nobody spoke.

Victoria lowered her eyes.

“I panicked.””

Daniel stared at her.

“People don’t panic and destroy someone’s life unless they’re hiding something.””

Security guards moved closer.

Daniel raised his hand.

“Everyone leaves.””

The guests began whispering immediately.

The perfect engagement party was over.

The champagne remained untouched.

The flowers still decorated the tables.

The musicians still stood beside the stage.

But the celebration had become a crime scene filled with secrets.

As guests slowly exited, Daniel remained in the ballroom.

With Lily.

With Victoria.

And with a question that refused to disappear.

Who was Alexander Sterling?

Twenty minutes later, Daniel sat inside his private office.

The room had always been his place of peace.

Hundreds of books lined the walls.

Family photographs rested on the shelves.

A large window overlooked the estate grounds.

Normally, this room reminded him of everything he had built.

Tonight, it reminded him of everything he didn’t know.

Lily sat across from him.

She looked uncomfortable.

Like she still couldn’t believe she belonged there.

Daniel noticed.

“You don’t have to sit like a guest.””

She looked up.

“What?””

“This is your home too.””

Her eyes filled with emotion.

“I don’t know if I know how to be here.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You’re my sister.””

The words were simple.

But they carried twenty years of pain.

Lily wiped her eyes.

“I spent my whole life wondering why nobody came for me.””

Daniel looked down.

“I tried.””

“I know.””

He looked surprised.

“You do?””

She nodded.

“The orphanage director told me later.””

“Told you what?””

“That there was someone looking.””

Daniel swallowed.

“For years.””

She smiled sadly.

“I always hoped it was true.””

Daniel looked away.

He couldn’t handle the emotion building inside him.

Then Lily reached into her pocket.

She pulled out something small.

An old folded piece of paper.

“What is that?””

She hesitated.

“I found it inside the locket.””

Daniel immediately stood.

“What?””

She opened the paper carefully.

It was old.

Yellowed.

Almost falling apart.

Daniel leaned closer.

There were only three words written.

*Protect Alexander Sterling.*

Daniel’s face changed.

“Where did you get this?””

“I’ve had it since I was a child.””

“Why didn’t you show anyone?””

Lily looked down.

“Because I didn’t know who Alexander was.””

Daniel stared at the message.

Protect Alexander.

Not find Alexander.

Not save Alexander.

Protect.

His mind raced.

Then the office door opened.

Victoria walked in.

Two security guards followed behind her.

Daniel looked up.

“What are you doing here?””

She ignored the guards.

“I need to talk to you.””

“You lost that right.””

Victoria looked at Lily.

Then at the paper.

Her face changed.

“You found it.””

Daniel noticed.

Again.

That reaction.

“You knew about this.””

Victoria closed her eyes.

“I knew about the name.””

“Explain.””

She looked exhausted.

Not the polished woman from the engagement party.

Not the woman who smiled for cameras.

Just someone carrying a secret too heavy.

“My father worked for your family.””

Daniel crossed his arms.

“My father had many employees.””

“Your father trusted him.””

“Who was he?””

Victoria hesitated.

“Richard Hayes.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

The name was familiar.

Very familiar.

Richard Hayes.

The Sterling family’s former financial advisor.

The man who disappeared shortly after Daniel’s parents died.

“I thought he died.””

Victoria nodded.

“Everyone did.””

Daniel stared.

“What do you mean?””

“My father changed his identity.””

The room went silent.

“Why?””

Victoria looked at Lily.

“Because he was afraid.””

Daniel’s voice became colder.

“Afraid of what?””

She looked back at him.

“Alexander.””

The name hung in the air.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Tell me about him.””

Victoria sat down slowly.

“I don’t know everything.””

“Tell me what you know.””

She took a breath.

“Your parents had another child.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“When?””

“Before you were born.””

That made no sense.

“My parents only had two children.””

Victoria shook her head.

“That’s what they wanted everyone to believe.””

Daniel looked at Lily.

Then back at Victoria.

“How old was Alexander?””

“He was older than you.””

Daniel felt dizzy.

An older brother.

A person who had existed before him.

A person nobody had ever mentioned.

“Why?””

Victoria looked toward the window.

“Because Alexander was supposed to inherit everything.””

Daniel froze.

“What?””

“Your grandfather created a rule in the family trust. The oldest child would control the Sterling fortune.””

Daniel slowly understood.

“If Alexander existed…”

“He would have been the heir.””

Silence.

Daniel’s entire life suddenly looked different.

His parents’ accident.

Lily disappearing.

Alexander vanishing.

A fortune worth billions.

Too many pieces.

But one piece still didn’t fit.

“My parents loved us.””

Victoria looked at him.

“I believe they did.””

“Then why hide him?””

She looked down.

“Because Alexander was dangerous.””

Daniel stared.

“Dangerous?””

Victoria nodded.

“He was brilliant. Angry. Obsessed with proving your parents betrayed him.””

“That sounds impossible.””

“Does it?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Because suddenly, he remembered something.

A locked drawer in his father’s office.

A drawer he was never allowed to open.

He remembered his father once saying:

“Some family secrets are buried for a reason.””

Daniel had always assumed he meant business problems.

Not another son.

Not another brother.

A knock interrupted them.

The security chief entered.

“Mr. Sterling.””

Daniel turned.

“What?””

The man looked nervous.

“We found something.””

“What?””

He held up a tablet.

“Someone accessed your private archives.””

Daniel frowned.

“My archives are offline.””

“Yes.””

The security chief swallowed.

“That’s why this is impossible.””

He turned the screen around.

A file was open.

An old family document.

The title appeared at the top.

*Sterling Family Birth Records.*

Daniel stepped closer.

The document showed three children.

Daniel Sterling.

Lily Rose Sterling.

And another name.

Alexander James Sterling.

But beneath Alexander’s name was a red stamp.

*STATUS: DECEASED.*

Daniel stared.

“No.””

The security chief looked uncomfortable.

“Mr. Sterling…”

Daniel pointed at the screen.

“My brother died?””

Nobody answered.

Because another line appeared beneath the record.

A recently added note.

Added only minutes ago.

*Correction: Death certificate was falsified. Alexander Sterling is alive.*

Daniel felt the room spin.

Alive.

His brother was alive.

The person who had been erased from his family history was somewhere in the world.

Then the tablet received a new notification.

A message.

From an unknown sender.

Daniel opened it.

There was a photograph attached.

His blood ran cold.

It showed a man standing outside the Sterling mansion gates.

A man with Daniel’s eyes.

A man he had never met.

The message underneath said:

*“You finally found Lily.””*

May you like

A second message appeared.

*“Now find me before Victoria does.””*
