Surprise

Chapter 9: The Third Brother’s Secret

Ray didn’t move.

Neither did Daniel.

The man standing beside the motorcycle watched them with a calm expression, but there was something different about him.

Not like Victor.

Victor carried himself like a man who believed he owned every room he entered.

This man looked like someone who had spent years surviving rooms he didn’t own.

His jacket was worn.

His face carried old scars.

His eyes carried even older memories.

“Ethan.””

Ray said the name like it was something he had forgotten how to pronounce.

The man nodded.

“Yeah.””

A long silence followed.

Then Ray looked at Daniel.

“What is this?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

That scared me more than anything.

Because Daniel always had an answer.

Even when the answer was painful.

Even when it hurt.

But now?

Nothing.

Ethan looked at him.

“You never told him.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“No.””

“Twenty years.””

“I was protecting him.””

Ethan laughed quietly.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

Ray looked between them.

“Someone explain.””

Nobody did.

Ray stepped forward.

“I’m done asking.””

His voice carried through the empty road.

“I spent twenty years believing my brother died.””

He pointed at Daniel.

“Then he comes back.””

He looked at Victor’s men moving in the distance.

“Then I find out my father was involved.””

Then Ethan.

“And now another person from my past appears?””

Ray shook his head.

“No more secrets.””

Ethan looked at him.

“You’re right.””

Daniel looked at Ethan.

“Don’t.””

Ethan ignored him.

“Your brother wasn’t the only Dawson who disappeared that night.””

Ray froze.

“What?””

Ethan looked at Daniel.

“You should have told him.””

Daniel looked away.

Ray’s voice became quiet.

“Who are you?””

Ethan stared at him.

Then answered:

“Your brother.””

The words didn’t make sense.

Not at first.

I thought I had heard him wrong.

Ray looked confused.

“What?””

Ethan stepped closer.

“Your half-brother.””

The night went completely silent.

Even the wind seemed to stop.

Ray stared.

“No.””

Ethan nodded.

“Yes.””

“No.””

“You were never told.””

Ray looked at Daniel.

“Is this true?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

And again, silence became the answer.

Ray’s face hardened.

“You knew.””

Daniel whispered:

“Yes.””

The anger returned instantly.

“You knew?””

“Ray—”

“You knew I had another brother?””

Daniel stepped forward.

“I found out after the crash.””

“And you said nothing?””

“I didn’t know how.””

Ray laughed.

A painful sound.

“Of course.””

He looked at Ethan.

“Who are you?””

Ethan’s expression changed.

“My name is Ethan Vale.””

A pause.

“But my mother’s name was Rachel Dawson.””

Ray went still.

Their father’s secrets were becoming endless.

“Our father had another family?””

Ethan nodded.

“Before your mother.””

Ray looked away.

The betrayal was different this time.

Not the sharp pain of losing someone.

Something deeper.

The realization that the people you loved had entire lives you never knew existed.

Daniel spoke quietly.

“Ethan found us because he was investigating Blackstone too.””

Ray looked at him.

“And you trusted him?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Daniel looked at Ethan.

“Because he was the one who saved me.””

Ray stared.

“What?””

Ethan looked away.

“After the crash, Victor’s men found Daniel.””

Daniel nodded.

“They thought I was dead.””

“But you weren’t.””

“No.””

Ethan continued.

“I was there.””

Ray looked at him.

“What do you mean?””

Ethan’s voice became quieter.

“I was the one who pulled him away from the wreck.””

The memory seemed painful.

“I saw the motorcycle.””

He looked at Daniel.

“I saw him barely breathing.””

Ray listened.

“And then?””

Ethan swallowed.

“Victor’s men arrived.””

Daniel nodded.

“They were going to finish the job.””

Ray looked at Ethan.

“But you stopped them.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Ethan looked at him.

“Because he was my brother too.””

The words hit Ray differently.

Because suddenly the story wasn’t just about what he lost.

It was about everything happening around him that he never knew.

Daniel walked toward Ethan.

“You shouldn’t have come.””

Ethan smiled sadly.

“You always say that.””

“Because you always put yourself in danger.””

“So do you.””

For a moment, the two men looked like brothers.

Because they were.

Ray watched.

Conflicted.

Angry.

Lost.

Then Victor’s voice interrupted.

“Beautiful.””

Everyone turned.

Victor stood at the factory entrance.

His men behind him.

“I always wondered how many secrets a family could survive.””

Daniel moved in front of Ray.

Victor laughed.

“Still doing that?””

Daniel stared.

“You’re not touching them.””

Victor shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at Ray.

“I’m going to show him.””

Ray frowned.

“Show me what?””

Victor smiled.

“The truth.””

Ethan’s expression changed.

“No.””

Victor noticed.

“You know.””

Ethan said nothing.

Victor looked at Ray.

“Your father wasn’t just involved with Blackstone.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Stop.””

Victor continued.

“He created it.””

Ray looked confused.

“What?””

Victor smiled.

“Thomas Dawson was one of the original investors.””

Ray shook his head.

“No.””

“He helped build the company.””

“No.””

“He helped hide the defects.””

Ray looked at Daniel.

Daniel didn’t deny it.

That was enough.

Victor continued.

“And when Daniel discovered the truth, your father made a choice.””

Ray’s voice was barely audible.

“What choice?””

Victor looked at him.

“He chose the company.””

The words hurt.

Even after everything.

Ray still wanted to believe there was something good left.

Victor saw it.

“You really are like your brother.””

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“Don’t.””

“You both want to believe people are better than they are.””

Victor stepped closer.

“That’s why you lose.””

Suddenly, Ethan moved.

Fast.

He grabbed Ray’s shoulder and pulled him down.

A gunshot exploded.

The sound ripped through the night.

Everyone dropped.

The bullet hit the factory wall.

Chaos followed.

Daniel pushed Ray behind cover.

Sam grabbed the folders.

I dropped to the ground.

Victor’s men spread out.

“Move!”” Daniel shouted.

We ran.

Not toward the road.

Toward the motorcycles.

Daniel threw Ray a helmet.

Ray caught it.

Then stopped.

The memory flashed across his face.

The helmet.

The crash.

The lie.

Daniel noticed.

“Ray.””

Ray looked at him.

“I can’t.””

Daniel understood immediately.

“You can.””

“No.””

“Look at me.””

Ray did.

“That’s not the helmet.””

A pause.

“That’s fear.””

Ray stared.

Daniel stepped closer.

“You spent twenty years letting them take something from you.””

Another gunshot.

Daniel continued.

“Don’t let them take riding too.””

Ray looked at the motorcycle.

Then at Daniel.

And finally, he put on the helmet.

Not because he forgot.

Because he chose.

The engines roared.

We escaped into the night.

But Victor didn’t chase us.

That bothered Daniel.

A lot.

“He let us go,” Ethan said.

Daniel nodded.

“He wanted us to leave.””

Ray looked back.

“Why?””

Nobody answered.

Then Sam opened the folder he had taken from the factory.

His face changed.

“What?””

Daniel looked over.

“What is it?””

Sam held up a document.

“This isn’t about the helmets.””

Everyone went quiet.

“What do you mean?”” I asked.

Sam looked at Ray.

“The helmets were just the beginning.””

Ray frowned.

“Beginning of what?””

Sam turned the paper around.

At the top was a company name.

Not Blackstone.

A different one.

A newer one.

A company still operating.

Daniel read the name.

His expression changed.

“No.””

Ethan looked over his shoulder.

And whispered:

“He didn’t rebuild Blackstone.””

Ray stared at the document.

“Then what did he build?””

Daniel looked at the road ahead.

His voice was barely audible.

“Something much bigger.””

Sam pointed at the signature.

And everyone saw it.

The name at the bottom.

The person who approved the entire operation.

Not Victor Hale.

Not Thomas Dawson.

Someone else.

Someone Ray knew.

Someone who had been standing beside him for years.

Daniel looked at Ray.

May you like

And said the words that made my blood run cold.

“Your best friend has been working for Victor this entire time.””
