Chapter 8: The Memory That Was Stolen
Ray stared at the photograph.
I watched the color disappear from his face.
Not slowly.
All at once.
Like someone had turned off a light inside him.
The man standing in front of me was not the same Ray Dawson who had walked into Dawson Cycle every morning for years.
That Ray was confident.
Certain.
The kind of man who could fix a broken motorcycle and calm an angry customer in the same breath.
This Ray looked like a man watching his entire life collapse.
“No.””
The word barely escaped.
Victor stood across from him.
Silent.
Waiting.
Daniel took a step forward.
“Ray.””
Ray didn’t look up.
“No.””
“Listen to me.””
“No!””
The sound exploded through the factory.
Ray held the photograph tighter.
“I know what I saw.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You don’t.””
“You were there.””
“Yes.””
“You died there.””
“No.””
Ray looked at him.
“Then explain the picture.””
Nobody answered.
Because the picture was real.
That was the terrifying part.
It wasn’t a fake.
It wasn’t some obvious trick.
It showed Ray standing beside Daniel’s crashed motorcycle twenty years ago.
The same night everyone believed Daniel died.
Sam moved closer.
“Let me see.””
Ray handed him the photograph.
Sam studied it.
His expression changed.
“No.””
Victor smiled.
“You recognize it.””
Sam looked up.
“You manipulated it.””
Victor laughed quietly.
“Of course.””
Daniel stared at him.
“You still use the same method.””
I looked at Daniel.
“What method?””
Daniel’s eyes remained on Victor.
“Memory.””
Ray frowned.
“What?””
Victor smiled.
“He doesn’t want you to remember.””
Daniel shook his head.
“He wants you to remember the wrong thing.””
Ray looked between them.
“I don’t understand.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Because you were drugged.””
The factory went silent.
Ray stared.
“What?””
“After the crash.””
“No.””
“Ray—”
“No.””
Ray backed away.
“I remember that night.””
Daniel nodded.
“You remember pieces.””
Ray looked angry.
“I remember everything.””
Daniel shook his head.
“That’s what makes it dangerous.””
Victor crossed his arms.
“Your brother always thought he was smarter than everyone.””
Daniel ignored him.
“Ray, tell me what you remember.””
Ray looked away.
“The phone call.””
“From who?””
“My father.””
Daniel nodded.
“What did he say?””
Ray closed his eyes.
The memory came back.
“I don’t know.””
“You do.””
Ray shook his head.
“I got a call.””
His voice became quieter.
“He said there had been an accident.””
Daniel waited.
“And then?””
“I drove there.””
“Alone?””
Ray hesitated.
“Yes.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Are you sure?””
Ray frowned.
“What?””
“Are you sure you drove there alone?””
The question bothered him.
Because he didn’t know.
And not knowing scared him.
Ray looked at the photograph again.
“I was there.””
“Yes.””
“You said I wasn’t.””
“I said you weren’t supposed to be.””
Ray stared.
Daniel took a breath.
“The night of the crash, I discovered Victor knew about the files.””
He looked at Sam.
“Sam helped me hide the evidence.””
Sam nodded.
“I was supposed to meet Daniel afterward.””
“But you didn’t.””
“No.””
Sam looked ashamed.
“Because someone stopped me.””
Ray looked at him.
“Who?””
Sam hesitated.
“My boss.””
Victor smiled.
“Everyone always forgets the small people.””
Sam ignored him.
“Thomas Dawson.””
Ray froze.
“My father.””
Sam nodded.
“He found out.””
Daniel continued.
“He confronted me.””
Ray looked confused.
“Why?””
“Because Victor convinced him that if the truth came out, your family would lose everything.””
Ray laughed bitterly.
“Of course.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Ray.””
“No.””
Ray shook his head.
“My whole life, I thought my father was just hard on us.””
He looked at the old factory.
“He was protecting a secret.””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Ray looked at him.
“Did he hurt you?””
Daniel’s silence said everything.
Ray’s expression changed.
“He did.””
Daniel looked away.
“He didn’t plan to kill me.””
“That’s supposed to make it better?””
“No.””
Daniel’s voice was quiet.
“It’s supposed to explain why I survived.””
Ray stared.
“What happened?””
Daniel looked at the floor.
“Your father tried to take the files.””
“And?””
“We fought.””
A pause.
“Then Victor arrived.””
The room became still.
“Victor wanted me gone.””
Daniel touched the scar on his face.
“He arranged the crash.””
Ray looked at the photograph.
“But I was there.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Daniel looked at him.
“Because you followed me.””
Ray shook his head.
“I don’t remember.””
“I know.””
“Why don’t I remember?””
Daniel looked at Victor.
Victor smiled.
“Tell him.””
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“You were exposed to a chemical sedative.””
Ray looked confused.
“Who?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Victor did.
“Your brother.””
The accusation hit instantly.
Ray looked at Daniel.
Daniel’s face hardened.
“Not by choice.””
Victor smiled.
“There it is.””
He stepped closer.
“The truth always sounds better when he tells it.””
Daniel looked at Ray.
“Victor forced me to use it.””
Ray stared.
“Why?””
“Because he wanted you gone.””
Daniel’s voice broke.
“I refused.””
Victor laughed.
“You begged.””
Daniel looked at him with pure hatred.
“I begged because you threatened my brother.””
Ray looked between them.
“So what happened?””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I put the sedative in your drink.””
Ray stepped back.
“You drugged me.””
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt more than a lie.
“Why?””
“Because I needed you unconscious.””
Ray’s face twisted.
“You don’t understand.””
Daniel looked at him.
“I know exactly what it looks like.””
“Do you?””
Ray’s voice cracked.
“You took away my choice.””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
A pause.
“And I’ve hated myself for it every day since.””
Nobody spoke.
Because there was no defense.
Only a reason.
And sometimes reasons don’t erase damage.
Sam looked at Ray.
“Daniel saved your life.””
Ray looked at him.
“But he lied to me.””
“Yes.””
The answer surprised everyone.
Sam continued.
“He lied because he was trying to protect you.””
Ray looked away.
“And now I’m supposed to forgive him?””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
Ray looked at him.
“No?””
“No.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“You’re supposed to be angry.””
The words surprised him.
“You deserve to be angry.””
Ray stared.
“I took away your chance to know the truth.””
Daniel’s eyes filled.
“I’m sorry.””
For the first time all night, Ray had no response.
Then Victor ruined the moment.
“You see?””
Everyone looked at him.
“This is why people like me win.””
Daniel turned.
“What?””
Victor smiled.
“Because you people believe love makes you better.””
He shook his head.
“It just makes you easier to control.””
Sam stepped forward.
“You’re finished.””
Victor laughed.
“Am I?””
He looked toward the ceiling.
Then toward the entrance.
And I heard it.
Vehicles.
More than before.
A lot more.
Daniel’s expression changed.
“Backup.””
Victor nodded.
“You didn’t think I came alone?””
Ray looked toward the door.
“You brought people here?””
Victor smiled.
“I brought insurance.””
The factory filled with footsteps.
Daniel grabbed the folders.
“We leave now.””
Ray didn’t move.
Daniel looked at him.
“Ray.””
For a moment, they just looked at each other.
Twenty years of pain.
Twenty years of anger.
Twenty years of missing each other.
Then Ray finally moved.
Not because everything was forgiven.
It wasn’t.
But because Daniel was still his brother.
They ran.
The maintenance tunnel shook with footsteps behind us.
Victor’s men followed.
We moved through the narrow passage as fast as we could.
At the end was an old exit door.
Daniel pushed it open.
Cold night air hit my face.
We stepped outside.
Then stopped.
Because someone was already waiting.
A single motorcycle sat beside the road.
The rider removed his helmet.
And I recognized him.
Not because I knew him.
Because Ray did.
His face went completely still.
“No.””
Daniel looked at the man.
And for the first time that night…
he looked afraid.
The rider smiled.
“You really thought you could disappear twice?””
Ray whispered:
“Ethan.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Who is that?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
The man walked closer.
And said:
“Hello, Ray.””
May you like
A pause.
“I guess it’s time you finally learned what happened to the third brother.””
