Chapter 6: The Truth Victor Hale Buried
The first thing I heard was Ray breathing.
Not loudly.
Not fearfully.
Just enough to remind me that the impossible was happening around us.
His brother was alive.
The man responsible for everything was standing outside.
And we were trapped inside a building that had been abandoned for years but somehow still had secrets worth killing for.
Daniel moved slowly through the darkness.
Every step was careful.
Calculated.
Like he had spent twenty years learning how to survive moments exactly like this.
“Everyone stay behind me,” he whispered.
Ray immediately shook his head.
“No.””
Daniel looked back.
“Ray.””
“You disappeared for twenty years.””
A pause.
“You don’t get to come back and tell me where to stand.””
Even in the middle of danger, I almost smiled.
Because that sounded exactly like Ray.
Daniel stared at him.
Then something changed in his expression.
Not annoyance.
Pride.
“You’re still stubborn.””
Ray looked at him.
“You’re still annoying.””
For a second, the two brothers almost looked normal.
Almost.
Then the sound of a door opening cut through the moment.
A flashlight beam moved across the factory floor.
A man stepped inside.
Older.
Expensive suit.
Silver hair.
Perfect posture.
He didn’t look like a criminal.
That was the unsettling part.
People expected dangerous men to look dangerous.
Victor Hale looked like someone who belonged in a boardroom.
Like someone who shook hands before destroying lives.
He looked around the room.
Then his eyes landed on Daniel.
A small smile appeared.
“Twenty years.””
Nobody answered.
Victor sighed.
“I was beginning to think you had finally accepted reality.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“You mean your version of reality.””
Victor smiled.
“Still dramatic.””
Ray moved beside his brother.
Victor looked at him.
And the smile disappeared.
“Ray Dawson.””
Ray stared.
“You know who I am.””
“Of course.””
Victor looked almost disappointed.
“You were always the emotional one.””
Ray’s fists tightened.
“You killed him.””
Victor glanced at Daniel.
Then back at Ray.
“No.””
The answer was calm.
Too calm.
“I saved him.””
Nobody spoke.
Victor continued.
“You don’t understand what happened.””
Daniel laughed quietly.
“That’s your favorite line.””
Victor ignored him.
“Ray, your brother found something that could destroy thousands of lives.””
Ray looked at Daniel.
“What?””
Victor continued.
“Blackstone wasn’t just a helmet company.””
Daniel’s face hardened.
“Don’t.””
Victor kept talking.
“We developed advanced impact technology. Military contracts. Racing programs. Emergency protection systems.””
He walked farther inside.
“And like every successful company, we faced competition.””
Sam stepped forward.
“You cut corners.””
Victor looked at him.
“Samuel Reed.””
The way he said the name made Sam freeze.
“You look terrible.””
Sam’s expression became cold.
“You look exactly the same.””
Victor smiled.
“Some people age better than others.””
Ray looked between them.
“You know each other.””
Victor laughed softly.
“Oh, Ray.””
He looked around.
“Everyone here knows each other.””
The words made my stomach tighten.
“What does that mean?”” I asked.
Victor looked at me.
“And you must be Mike.””
I froze.
“How do you know my name?””
Victor smiled.
“Because Ray trusts you.””
A pause.
“And Ray has always had terrible judgment when it comes to people.””
Ray stepped forward.
“Watch your mouth.””
Victor ignored him.
“Your brother made the same mistake.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“Don’t talk about him.””
Victor looked at Daniel.
“I’m talking about you.””
The tension grew.
Daniel pointed toward the folders.
“You came for these.””
Victor glanced at the documents.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Victor looked almost confused.
“Because after twenty years, I’m tired of cleaning up your mistakes.””
Ray stepped closer.
“Your mistakes?””
Victor looked at him.
“You really don’t know.””
Ray’s expression hardened.
“Tell me.””
Victor sighed.
“Your brother wasn’t investigating Blackstone.””
Daniel stared at him.
“Don’t do this.””
“He was helping create the problem.””
Ray looked at Daniel.
“What?””
The word came out quietly.
Daniel didn’t answer.
Victor smiled.
“There it is.””
He pointed at Ray.
“The question you’ve spent twenty years avoiding.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Don’t listen to him.””
“Why?”” Victor asked.
“Because the truth hurts?””
Ray looked between them.
“What truth?””
Nobody answered.
And that silence was worse than anything.
Ray’s face changed.
“Daniel.””
His brother looked away.
“Tell me.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
For a moment, he looked exhausted.
Not like a survivor.
Like someone who had been carrying a weight too heavy for too long.
“I worked on the original helmet design.””
Ray stared.
“I know.””
“No.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You don’t.””
He looked at the files.
“I helped develop the impact system.””
Victor smiled.
“Tell him the rest.””
Daniel ignored him.
“I believed in it.””
His voice became quieter.
“I thought we were building something that would save people.””
Ray nodded slowly.
“And?””
Daniel looked at him.
“Then I found out Victor changed the materials.””
Sam stepped in.
“To save money.””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
Ray looked at Victor.
“You knew?””
Victor shrugged.
“Business decisions.””
“People could die.””
Victor’s face remained calm.
“People die every day.””
The coldness of the answer made everyone silent.
Daniel moved toward him.
“That’s why I exposed you.””
Victor shook his head.
“No.””
He smiled.
“That’s why I stopped you.””
Ray looked at Daniel.
“What happened that night?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Victor did.
“Your brother was going to release the information.””
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“He was going to destroy innocent people.””
Victor looked at him.
“No. He was going to destroy me.””
The factory went quiet.
Ray stared.
“Then why fake his death?””
Victor looked at him.
“Because dead people don’t testify.””
A chill went through me.
Sam whispered:
“You knew he survived.””
Victor looked at him.
“Yes.””
Ray turned.
“You knew?””
Victor nodded.
“I found him after the crash.””
Ray’s face changed.
“You left him there?””
“No.””
Victor smiled faintly.
“I gave him a choice.””
Daniel looked disgusted.
“You threatened everyone I loved.””
Victor shrugged.
“You were valuable.””
Ray looked at Daniel.
“What choice?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Victor did.
“Work for me.””
The words echoed.
Ray stared.
“And if he refused?””
Victor looked at Daniel.
“Then people around him would suffer.””
Daniel’s face became unreadable.
Ray understood.
“You stayed away to protect us.””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
Ray looked away.
For twenty years, he had believed his brother abandoned him.
Now he was discovering the opposite.
His brother had disappeared because he loved him.
That realization hurt more.
Victor looked at the brothers.
“Beautiful reunion.””
Then he reached out his hand.
“Now give me the files.””
Daniel laughed.
“You think I kept them for twenty years just to hand them back?””
Victor sighed.
“I was hoping maturity would come with age.””
Sam stepped backward.
“We need to move.””
Victor noticed.
Too late.
Daniel grabbed Ray’s arm.
“Now.””
Everything happened at once.
A flashlight dropped.
Someone shouted.
A door slammed.
We ran.
The old factory erupted with movement.
Men rushed in from both entrances.
Daniel knew the building.
Every hallway.
Every exit.
He pulled us through a narrow passage behind the storage rooms.
Ray followed.
Sam carried the folders.
I ran behind them, heart pounding.
“Where are we going?”” I asked.
Daniel didn’t turn.
“Old maintenance tunnel.””
“You knew about this?””
“I helped build it.””
Of course he did.
Everything about Daniel Dawson seemed connected to this place.
His past.
His mistakes.
His survival.
We reached a metal door.
Daniel opened it.
The tunnel beyond was dark.
But before we entered, a voice stopped us.
“Daniel.””
Everyone froze.
Victor stood at the end of the hallway.
Alone.
No guards.
No weapons.
Just him.
“After all this time, you still think you can outrun me?””
Daniel stared.
“No.””
Victor smiled.
“Good.””
A pause.
“Because I don’t want you running anymore.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“What do you want?””
Victor looked at Ray.
“I want him to know the truth.””
Ray frowned.
“What truth?””
Victor looked at Daniel.
Then said:
“The reason your brother survived the crash…”
A pause.
“…is because someone else was wearing the helmet first.””
Daniel’s face changed.
Sam went pale.
Ray looked confused.
“What does that mean?””
Victor smiled.
“Ask your brother who was really supposed to die that night.””
Daniel didn’t answer.
And that silence was the first time I saw fear on his face.
Not for himself.
For Ray.
May you like
Because whatever Victor had just revealed…
was the one truth Daniel had spent twenty years trying to bury.
