Surprise

Chapter 4

I returned to the hospital where Lily had been treated.

Not because I expected the staff to remember every visitor.

But because I needed to understand what happened during those five frightening days.

Eight months earlier, Lily developed pneumonia.

Her fever wouldn't come down.

She struggled to breathe.

I rushed her to the emergency department, terrified.

Marcus arrived two hours later.

He promised to handle everything while I stayed beside her.

I remembered being grateful.

I remembered how exhausted I felt.

And I remembered Calvin walking into her room carrying a folder.

Now I wondered whether that visit had been planned.

Renee helped me request the relevant records.

The hospital confirmed that Lily had been admitted on the dates I remembered.

The visitor records showed Marcus, Evelyn, Vanessa, and Calvin had all visited.

That alone didn't prove wrongdoing.

But it established the timeline.

I also located photographs from that week.

One showed Lily sleeping beneath a hospital blanket.

Another showed Marcus sitting beside her bed.

Then I found a photograph Jasmine had taken.

I was holding a pen.

Calvin stood beside me with a folder.

I stared at the picture.

My stomach tightened.

The folder was dark blue.

I remembered it clearly.

Calvin had said, "Just routine paperwork, Nia."

Marcus had added, "It's related to our insurance coverage."

I signed where they pointed.

Then I returned to my daughter.

I hadn't been thinking clearly.

I was frightened.

Exhausted.

Desperate for Lily to recover.

Now I understood how vulnerable I'd been.

I showed the photograph to Renee.

She studied it.

"This helps establish that paperwork was presented to you during the hospital stay."

I nodded.

"Could they have hidden the loan documents?"

"That's something the records and authentication evidence may help determine."

I took a breath.

"Okay."

Renee then contacted the title company and lender through appropriate legal channels.

She requested the complete transaction file.

She also began preparing to challenge any unauthorized security interest in my home.

Meanwhile, the education account investigation continued.

The bank identified several large transfers into a business account associated with Vanessa.

Marcus had approved at least one transfer using his access as an account administrator.

Other transactions required further review.

I felt sick every time another document arrived.

Then Jasmine asked me a question I hadn't considered.

"Nia, why did Vanessa need so much money?"

I looked up.

"What?"

"Think about it."

She sat beside me.

"She borrowed nearly half a million against your house."

I nodded.

"Then she took Lily's savings."

My chest tightened.

"Yes."

Jasmine frowned.

"Where did all that money go?"

I stared at her.

Vanessa said she was opening a restaurant.

But I had never seen a completed restaurant.

Only expensive plans.

Architectural drawings.

Luxury furniture catalogs.

And announcements about a grand opening that kept getting postponed.

I took out my phone.

I searched for the company.

Bennett Signature Dining.

There was a polished website.

Beautiful photographs.

A promise of luxury dining.

But no opening date.

No confirmed location.

No reservations.

Then I found something strange.

The business address belonged to a vacant commercial building.

I showed Jasmine.

She frowned.

"Nia, this looks wrong."

I nodded slowly.

The following day, I contacted Renee.

She arranged for a forensic accountant, David Ellis, to review the available business and financial documents.

David was calm and precise.

He didn't speculate.

He followed the money.

Three days later, we met.

David placed a chart on the table.

"Some funds went toward legitimate business expenses."

I nodded.

"Okay."

"But other transfers went to entities that don't appear directly connected to restaurant development."

My stomach tightened.

"What entities?"

He showed me several company names.

One belonged to Calvin.

Another had been registered only a year earlier.

A third was connected to a property investment group.

I stared at the chart.

"Was Vanessa using our money for something else?"

David answered carefully.

"That's one possibility. We need additional records."

Then he pointed toward another transaction.

A payment of seventy thousand dollars.

The recipient was listed as Evelyn Bennett Consulting.

My heart stopped.

"That's my mother-in-law."

David nodded.

I stared at the page.

Evelyn had received money too.

The woman who stood at the dining table wearing an elegant silver dress.

The woman who claimed family loyalty was sacred.

She had personally benefited from the scheme.

My stomach twisted.

"How much did she receive?"

David reviewed the records.

"At least seventy thousand that we've identified so far."

I covered my mouth.

Renee looked toward me.

"Nia, do you need a break?"

I shook my head.

"No."

I wiped my eyes.

"Keep going."

David explained that payments to Evelyn's company had been described as consulting fees.

There was little documentation showing what services had been provided.

More investigation was needed.

But I couldn't ignore the pattern.

Lily's savings.

My home.

Vanessa's company.

Calvin's business.

Evelyn's consulting account.

And Marcus's approval.

It was beginning to look like a family operation.

One that excluded me.

Except when they needed my signature.

That evening, I received a call from Marcus.

I hesitated before answering.

"Nia?"

"What?"

His voice sounded strained.

"Can we talk?"

"We're talking."

He sighed.

"Not like this."

I stared at the window.

"Marcus, did your mother receive seventy thousand dollars from Vanessa's business?"

Silence.

Then he whispered, "Where did you hear that?"

My heart dropped.

"Answer me."

He sighed.

"It was repayment for an old family investment."

I closed my eyes.

"Using money connected to Lily's account?"

He didn't answer.

I felt tears gathering.

"Marcus, how could you?"

He sounded desperate.

"I thought Vanessa would repay everything."

"Then why didn't you ask me?"

He became quiet.

I continued.

"Why did you let your sister use our daughter's future?"

His voice broke.

"Because Mom said the family business couldn't fail."

I stared at the wall.

"And what about our family?"

Silence.

I swallowed.

"What about Lily?"

He whispered, "I made a mistake."

I shook my head.

"You made choices."

He began crying.

"Nia, I love you."

I looked toward Lily's bedroom.

She was asleep beside her stuffed rabbit.

My heart tightened.

"Love doesn't protect a family if you keep betraying it."

Marcus sobbed quietly.

Then he whispered, "There's something you need to know."

I closed my eyes.

"What now?"

"Vanessa's restaurant isn't opening."

My stomach tightened.

"Why?"

He hesitated.

"Because the company is almost bankrupt."

I stared at the wall.

"Then where did the money go?"

Marcus began crying harder.

"Calvin convinced her to invest most of it."

My heart pounded.

"Invest in what?"

Silence.

Then he whispered, "A property project that doesn't exist."

I stopped breathing.

Because the money stolen from my daughter might not simply have been borrowed.

May you like

It might have vanished into a fraudulent investment scheme.

And suddenly, recovering it became far more difficult.
