Surprise

Chapter 1

My sister-in-law slapped me across the dinner table while my six-year-old daughter watched.

The sound echoed beneath the crystal chandelier.

For one terrible second, nobody moved.

My husband didn't stand.

My mother-in-law didn't speak.

And the woman who had just struck me smiled as though she had finally put me in my place.

"Know your place in this family!" Vanessa screamed.

I slowly touched my burning cheek.

Then I looked at Marcus.

My husband.

The man who promised to protect me.

The man I had loved for eleven years.

He sat motionless in his black shirt, staring at his plate.

"You're really going to let her do that?" I whispered.

He said nothing.

And that silence changed my marriage forever.

My name is Nia Bennett.

I was thirty-eight years old, a working mother, and the wife of a man whose family had spent years convincing me I was lucky to belong to them.

Marcus was forty-two.

Tall.

Handsome.

Successful.

He managed a family property development company with his younger sister, Vanessa.

Their mother, Evelyn, was the respected matriarch who controlled every family gathering.

To outsiders, they were generous, successful people.

Beautiful homes.

Expensive cars.

Perfect holiday photographs.

But I knew another side of them.

The side that appeared whenever I questioned Vanessa's spending.

Whenever I wanted to make decisions without Evelyn's permission.

Whenever I reminded Marcus that our daughter mattered just as much as his mother's opinions.

That evening, we had gathered at Evelyn's mansion for a family dinner.

The long dining table glittered with gold-rimmed plates.

Candles burned beneath a crystal chandelier.

Vanessa wore a fitted burgundy dress.

Evelyn sat at the head of the table in elegant silver.

Marcus sat beside me.

And Lily, our six-year-old daughter, wore her favorite pink cardigan and floral skirt.

She had spent the entire afternoon drawing pictures of our family.

She wanted to surprise Grandma Evelyn.

I wanted the evening to be peaceful.

But I had discovered something that morning.

Something I couldn't ignore.

Three days earlier, I received a notice from the county records office.

It concerned the house Marcus and I lived in.

The house my father had helped me purchase before our wedding.

According to the notice, our property had been pledged as collateral for a business loan.

A loan worth four hundred and eighty thousand dollars.

I had never authorized it.

The borrowing company belonged to Vanessa.

When I asked Marcus about the notice, he became strangely quiet.

Then he said we should discuss it after dinner.

I knew that tone.

It meant he was hoping the problem would disappear.

But I had spent too many years allowing his family to make decisions that affected my life.

I wasn't going to do it again.

Halfway through dinner, Vanessa began talking about a new luxury restaurant she planned to open.

"It's going to be the most beautiful place in Atlanta," she announced.

Evelyn smiled proudly.

"My daughter has always been ambitious."

I looked toward Marcus.

He avoided my eyes.

Then Vanessa turned toward me.

"You haven't said anything, Nia."

I placed my fork down.

"I hope your business succeeds."

She smiled.

"That's all?"

I took a breath.

"I also hope you're financing it with your own assets."

The room became silent.

Marcus looked at me sharply.

"Nia."

I ignored him.

Vanessa's smile disappeared.

"Excuse me?"

I looked directly at her.

"I received a notice concerning our house."

Evelyn stopped eating.

Vanessa leaned back.

"And?"

I felt my heart pounding.

"And I want to know why my home appears on paperwork connected to your business."

Marcus closed his eyes.

Vanessa laughed.

"Oh, please."

I stared at her.

"That's not an answer."

She lifted her wineglass.

"You're always so dramatic."

I took a breath.

"Four hundred and eighty thousand dollars isn't drama."

Evelyn's hand tightened around her fork.

Lily looked up from her plate.

"Mommy?"

I smiled gently.

"It's okay, sweetheart."

Then Vanessa slammed her glass down.

"How dare you embarrass me at my mother's table?"

I kept my voice steady.

"I'm asking about my property."

She pointed at me.

"Your property?"

I nodded.

"Yes."

She laughed bitterly.

"Everything you have came from marrying my brother."

My stomach tightened.

"That's not true."

Vanessa stood.

"You'd be nothing without this family!"

Marcus shifted in his chair.

"Vanessa, calm down."

She ignored him.

I looked toward Evelyn.

She stared at her plate.

I should have recognized the warning.

Nobody was surprised by the loan.

Nobody asked what paperwork I was talking about.

They already knew.

I slowly stood.

"I'm not going to argue in front of Lily."

Vanessa stepped closer.

"Sit down."

I shook my head.

"No."

Her eyes narrowed.

"You think you're better than us?"

I picked up my handbag.

"I think everyone deserves to know when their property is being used."

Then she slapped me.

Hard.

Across the left cheek.

My head snapped sideways.

The plates rattled.

Lily screamed.

"Mommy!"

I stood frozen.

My skin burned.

Tears filled my eyes.

Vanessa pointed at me.

"Know your place in this family!"

I turned toward Marcus.

He remained seated.

I waited.

One second.

Two.

Three.

He didn't move.

"You're really going to let her do that?"

He looked away.

Something inside me broke.

I stepped toward Vanessa.

Then I slapped her once.

She stumbled backward, clutching her cheek.

"You little—"

I pointed at her.

"That was the last time you ever touch me."

Marcus rushed forward.

"Nia, enough!"

I turned toward him.

"No."

My voice shook.

"I've had enough."

Vanessa began screaming.

"You attacked me!"

I stared at Marcus.

"Your sister hit me first."

He looked toward Evelyn.

Then toward Vanessa.

Still trying to decide whose approval mattered most.

I shook my head.

"I can't do this anymore."

I walked away from the table.

Lily ran toward me.

"Mommy!"

She grabbed my hand.

I knelt.

Her little face was wet with tears.

"Baby, we're going home."

She nodded.

I held her tightly.

Then we walked toward the front door.

Marcus hurried after us.

"Nia, wait."

He reached toward my arm.

I pulled away.

"Don't touch me."

He froze.

"You're overreacting."

I stared at him.

"Your sister slapped me."

He swallowed.

"She lost her temper."

I shook my head.

"And you lost your chance to protect us."

His face changed.

I held Lily's hand tighter.

"You watched your family humiliate me."

My voice broke.

"We're leaving."

I opened the front door.

Then Evelyn spoke from behind us.

"Marcus."

Her voice was quiet.

But something about it made everyone stop.

"Let her go."

I turned.

Evelyn stood beside the dining table.

Her expression was strangely defeated.

"She already knows what we hid from her."

Marcus went pale.

"Mom."

Vanessa stopped crying.

I stared at Evelyn.

"What?"

Marcus stepped toward his mother.

"Mom, what did you tell her?"

Evelyn looked directly at me.

Tears filled her eyes.

Then she whispered, "I didn't tell her anything."

My heart began pounding.

"Then what are you talking about?"

Evelyn slowly raised her hand.

She was holding a small brown envelope.

I recognized it.

It was the envelope I had found hidden inside Marcus's desk that morning.

The one containing a document with my forged signature.

But Evelyn's next words made my stomach turn.

"That signature isn't the only thing they stole, Nia."

I couldn't breathe.

Behind me, Lily tightened her grip on my hand.

And I realized the dinner hadn't been about a simple business loan.

May you like

My husband's family had been hiding something far worse.

Something they were terrified I would discover.
