Surprise

Chapter 6

I had never been afraid of opening a letter from my late wife before.

For years, Evelyn's handwritten notes were the things I treasured most.

Birthday cards.

Grocery lists.

Little messages she left beside the coffee maker.

Sometimes I found one tucked inside an old book and sat down to cry.

But the letter Alicia discovered frightened me.

Because it had been hidden among Daniel's financial records.

And someone had clearly wanted it kept away from me.

Olivia arranged for the document to be examined and preserved.

We met in her office two days later.

Alicia attended with her own attorney.

She looked exhausted.

When she saw me, she stood.

"Marcus."

I nodded.

"Thank you for coming."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I'm sorry."

I shook my head.

"You didn't create this situation."

She swallowed.

"I trusted Daniel."

I nodded.

"So did Vanessa."

Alicia looked away.

I knew she was carrying her own pain.

Whatever Daniel had done to our families, she would have to confront it too.

Olivia placed a scanned copy of the letter in front of me.

My hands began shaking.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

Evelyn's.

I recognized the way she formed the letter M.

The small loops.

The neat spacing.

I swallowed.

"That's hers."

Olivia nodded.

"We're verifying the original, but it appears consistent with her known handwriting."

I took a breath.

Then began reading.

Marcus,

If you're holding this letter, something has happened that I hoped we would never have to face.

I stopped.

My eyes filled with tears.

I looked at Olivia.

She nodded gently.

"Take your time."

I swallowed.

Then continued.

I know you're going to blame yourself for things you couldn't control.

Please don't.

You've given our daughter a beautiful life.

But there is something important about the trust that you must understand.

My chest tightened.

I kept reading.

I created the trust to protect Maya's future.

However, I also placed a separate inheritance under the care of my mother's estate.

It was intended for Maya when she becomes an adult.

I stared at the page.

A separate inheritance?

I looked at Olivia.

"Did you know about this?"

She frowned.

"Not in the current trust records."

My stomach tightened.

I turned back to the letter.

The additional assets were held through a family property partnership.

My mother wanted Maya to benefit from the income without being burdened by the business while she was young.

I stopped.

Evelyn's mother, Grace Carter, had owned several rental properties.

She died the year after Evelyn.

Her estate had been handled by a different attorney.

I remembered paperwork.

Meetings.

Endless phone calls.

But I had been grieving.

Raising a little girl.

Working full-time.

I trusted the professionals to handle everything.

Now I wondered what I had missed.

I continued reading.

The partnership documents are stored with Attorney Samuel Reed.

If anyone tells you the assets have been sold, please verify that independently.

My hands began shaking.

I looked up.

"Samuel Reed?"

Olivia nodded.

"He handled Grace's estate."

My chest tightened.

"Is he still practicing?"

"I'm not sure."

I swallowed.

Then read the final paragraph.

Marcus, remember that money can protect Maya from some hardships, but it cannot replace love.

Please never let anyone make her believe she must compete for her place in your heart.

Tell her I loved her.

Tell her she was my greatest joy.

And tell her that every good thing I ever built was meant to help her grow into the woman she wants to become.

Forever yours,

Evelyn.

I couldn't finish without crying.

I covered my face.

For a moment, I felt Evelyn beside me.

Not as a memory.

But as the woman who had known exactly what mattered.

Olivia quietly pushed a box of tissues toward me.

I wiped my eyes.

Then looked at Alicia.

"Thank you."

She nodded through her tears.

"I wish I'd found it sooner."

I shook my head.

"You found it when we needed it."

After the meeting, Olivia began tracing the property partnership.

Within days, we discovered several buildings still listed under companies connected to Grace Carter's estate.

There were rental properties.

Commercial units.

And a small apartment complex outside Atlanta.

The assets had generated income for years.

But the ownership records were complicated.

Some distributions had been held.

Others were routed through management companies.

And several transfers required investigation.

Then Olivia called with unexpected news.

"Marcus, we found Samuel Reed."

I sat upright.

"Is he alive?"

"Yes. He's retired."

Relief washed through me.

"Can we speak with him?"

"He's agreed to meet."

The next afternoon, we visited his home.

Samuel Reed was a Black man in his late seventies with silver hair and gentle eyes.

He welcomed us into a quiet living room.

When I introduced myself, he smiled sadly.

"Marcus Bennett."

I nodded.

"Yes, sir."

He took my hand.

"I knew your wife."

My throat tightened.

"You did?"

He nodded.

"Evelyn was an extraordinary woman."

Tears filled my eyes.

"She was."

He looked toward Olivia.

"I understand there's a question about Grace Carter's estate."

Olivia nodded.

"Yes."

Samuel sighed.

"I was concerned this might happen."

My stomach tightened.

"What do you mean?"

He leaned back.

"Before I retired, I warned the trustees that the property partnership needed stronger oversight."

I frowned.

"Why?"

"Because several management decisions were being made without adequate documentation."

My heart began pounding.

"By who?"

Samuel hesitated.

"An outside investment adviser."

Olivia leaned forward.

"Name?"

Samuel looked at me.

"Daniel Price."

I froze.

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.

Then Samuel continued.

"He became involved through a company that managed some of the properties."

My stomach tightened.

"How long ago?"

"About three years."

I stared.

That was around the time Vanessa and I began dating.

I felt sick.

"Did Daniel know Evelyn was my wife?"

Samuel nodded.

"Yes."

My heart pounded.

"Did he know Maya was the beneficiary?"

"Yes."

I closed my eyes.

Suddenly, the timeline made terrible sense.

Daniel had known about Evelyn's property inheritance before Vanessa and I were engaged.

Vanessa had asked about the trust.

She had encouraged me to share household financial information.

And now I learned her brother had been involved with assets connected to Maya's family.

I looked toward Olivia.

She was already taking notes.

Samuel continued.

"I became concerned when the management company requested authority to restructure certain properties."

My stomach tightened.

"Did you approve it?"

He shook his head.

"Not without additional verification."

I felt relief.

Then he said something that made my heart stop.

"After I refused, someone submitted documents claiming I had retired from the matter."

Olivia frowned.

"Were those documents legitimate?"

Samuel shook his head.

"No."

I stared.

Another attempt to bypass oversight.

Another effort to gain control.

Samuel reached toward a small folder.

"I kept copies."

He handed them to Olivia.

Inside were letters.

Emails.

And disputed transfer requests.

One document showed an attempt to redirect partnership distributions into an account controlled by Vantage Family Investments.

My stomach twisted.

Vanessa's company.

I looked at Samuel.

"Did any property get transferred?"

He shook his head.

"Not through my office."

Relief washed through me.

Then he added, "But I can't speak for everything that happened after I retired."

I nodded slowly.

Olivia closed the folder.

"We'll verify the current title and financial records."

Samuel looked toward me.

"Marcus, your wife wanted her daughter protected."

Tears filled my eyes.

"I know."

He continued.

"Don't let the paperwork overwhelm you."

I smiled sadly.

"Too late."

He chuckled.

Then grew serious.

"Follow the records."

I nodded.

"We will."

As we left, Olivia's phone rang.

She answered.

Her expression changed.

I stopped.

"What happened?"

She listened for several seconds.

Then looked at me.

"Marcus, investigators have located additional financial documents."

My heart tightened.

"About Daniel?"

She nodded.

Then said something unexpected.

"Several documents were signed by Vanessa."

I swallowed.

"Okay."

Olivia continued.

"But one set of records carries your signature."

I went cold.

"My signature?"

She nodded.

"And the date is two years ago."

I stared.

Two years earlier, I had been dating Vanessa.

I had never authorized any transfer involving Evelyn's family properties.

I looked at Olivia.

"Then someone forged it."

She nodded.

"That's one possibility we're examining."

My hands began shaking.

Because suddenly, I understood how close someone had come to stealing not only Maya's money.

But part of the legacy her mother and grandmother had carefully protected.

And I was determined to make sure they never succeeded.
