Surprise

Chapter 5

The moment I read Daniel's message about Maya's school, I called the police.

Not because I wanted to create drama.

Not because I wanted revenge.

But because a grown man had just used my thirteen-year-old daughter's location to frighten us.

That was enough.

Detective Brooks took the report seriously.

He asked for the original message.

The sender information.

And any previous communications involving Daniel.

Vanessa stood beside me, crying.

When the detective asked whether Daniel had threatened her before, she hesitated.

Then nodded.

My stomach tightened.

"What did he say?"

She looked ashamed.

"That he'd expose what I did if I stopped helping him."

I stared at her.

"What did you do?"

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

"I submitted documents."

My chest tightened.

"Using Maya's information?"

She nodded.

I closed my eyes.

The detective asked her to provide a formal statement.

She agreed.

Then he looked at me.

"Mr. Bennett, we'll review the reported threats and determine appropriate protective steps."

I nodded.

"Thank you."

That night, Maya stayed with Rebecca while I worked with Olivia to secure our records.

I changed passwords.

Reviewed account access.

Contacted the trust's financial institution.

And notified the school about the concerning communication.

I didn't tell Maya every frightening detail.

She needed truthful reassurance, not unnecessary fear.

But I explained that adults were handling a situation involving private information.

I told her nobody had the right to frighten her into silence.

She listened quietly.

Then whispered, "Did I do something wrong?"

My heart broke.

I sat beside her.

"No."

She looked up.

"Are you sure?"

I nodded.

"Completely."

She began crying.

I pulled her close.

For a long time, we sat together.

Then she whispered, "I miss Mom."

My throat tightened.

"I know."

She held me tighter.

"I wish she was here."

I closed my eyes.

"So do I."

For a moment, the years since Evelyn died seemed to disappear.

I remembered her voice.

Her laugh.

The way she would have wrapped Maya in her arms and told her she was loved.

I kissed my daughter's forehead.

"Your mother loved you more than anything."

Maya nodded through her tears.

"I know."

I smiled sadly.

"And I'm going to make sure you grow up knowing that love never disappeared."

She hugged me again.

The following morning, Olivia called.

"We've found something important."

I sat upright.

"What?"

"Daniel has been associated with several companies involved in questionable financial arrangements."

My stomach tightened.

"What kind?"

"Investment partnerships and private lending operations."

I frowned.

"Are there complaints?"

"Yes."

I closed my eyes.

She continued.

"Several families allege they were misled about where their money was going."

I felt sick.

"And Maya's trust?"

"The applications appear to have been part of an attempted financing arrangement."

My hands tightened.

"How much financing?"

Olivia paused.

"Potentially several hundred thousand dollars."

I stared.

My daughter's inheritance.

Evelyn's final gift.

Almost used to support somebody else's financial scheme.

I took a breath.

"Did Vanessa know?"

"We're still establishing her knowledge and involvement."

I nodded.

"Okay."

Olivia continued.

"There's another issue."

My stomach tightened.

"What?"

"Daniel appears to have used information from more than one child."

I froze.

"More than one?"

"Yes."

My chest tightened.

"Which children?"

She paused.

"His own family's records are being reviewed, but there are indications that Vanessa's sons' information may also have been used."

I stared at the wall.

Jayden.

Noah.

Two little boys who had stood beside their mother at our wedding.

Two boys I had helped teach to ride bicycles.

I felt sick.

"Do the boys know?"

"Probably not."

I closed my eyes.

For a moment, my anger toward Vanessa became something more complicated.

She had harmed Maya.

That truth didn't change.

But her own sons might also have been placed at risk.

I couldn't ignore that.

I took a breath.

"Olivia, we need to protect all three children."

Her voice softened.

"I agree."

That afternoon, I spoke with Vanessa's mother, Diane.

She had taken the boys home after the wedding.

Diane sounded exhausted.

"Marcus, I'm sorry about everything."

I nodded.

"Thank you."

She continued.

"Vanessa is devastated."

I took a breath.

"Diane, I need to ask about the boys."

Her voice changed.

"Are they okay?"

"As far as I know. But there may be financial issues involving their identities."

She went silent.

"What?"

I explained only what had been verified.

Diane began crying.

"Oh, God."

I swallowed.

"I'm sorry."

She took a shaky breath.

"Those babies haven't done anything."

"I know."

Diane continued.

"Daniel always said he was helping Vanessa plan for their future."

My stomach tightened.

"What did he ask for?"

She hesitated.

"Copies of their birth certificates."

I closed my eyes.

"And?"

"Social Security information."

My heart sank.

I took a breath.

"Diane, please tell investigators what you know."

She nodded through her tears.

"I will."

Then she whispered, "Marcus, are you still angry with Vanessa?"

I looked toward the window.

"Yes."

She sighed.

"I understand."

I continued.

"But my anger doesn't change the fact that the boys need protection."

Diane began crying again.

"Thank you."

That evening, I received an unexpected call.

Alicia Price.

Daniel's wife.

I barely knew her.

She was a quiet woman who worked as a nurse and raised their young daughter.

Her voice trembled when I answered.

"Mr. Bennett?"

"Marcus is fine."

She took a shaky breath.

"I think my husband has been lying to me."

My stomach tightened.

"What happened?"

She began crying.

"I found documents in his office."

I sat upright.

"What documents?"

"Applications with children's names."

My heart dropped.

She continued.

"Some had your daughter's name."

I closed my eyes.

"Have you shown them to police?"

"Not yet."

I took a breath.

"Please preserve them and contact your attorney or investigators."

She nodded through the phone.

"I will."

Then she whispered, "Marcus, I found another document."

My stomach tightened.

"What?"

"A letter from your late wife."

I froze.

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.

"Evelyn?"

Alicia nodded.

"Yes."

I stared at the wall.

Evelyn had died four years before I met Vanessa.

How could Daniel have a letter from her?

I swallowed.

"What does it say?"

Alicia hesitated.

"It's addressed to you."

My hands began shaking.

"Why does Daniel have it?"

She whispered, "I don't know."

I closed my eyes.

Then she continued.

"But there's a note attached."

My heart pounded.

"What note?"

Alicia took a breath.

"It says Evelyn's original trust documents should be located before Marcus discovers the discrepancy."

I couldn't breathe.

I had believed Evelyn's trust was properly established.

I had believed Olivia possessed the complete documents.

But now there was another letter.

Another possible discrepancy.

And someone had been keeping it from me.

I looked toward Maya's photograph on my desk.

Then whispered, "Alicia, please don't destroy anything."

She began crying.

"I won't."

After ending the call, I stared into the darkness.

My daughter's inheritance was no longer just a financial question.

May you like

Somebody had been searching for Evelyn's original instructions.

And I was beginning to fear that the trust contained a secret even I didn't know.
