Surprise

Chapter 7

I moved Dad and Danielle's family into a secure temporary arrangement while Rachel coordinated with investigators.

I didn't want anyone taking chances.

The situation had grown far beyond a dishonest wife and a disputed property transfer.

Now we had missing documents, questionable investment agreements, and a man connected to my mother's old financial investigation.

For the first time, I was genuinely afraid.

Not for the money.

For my family.

Dad tried to reassure me.

"Marcus, I've lived seventy years. I'm not going to spend the rest of my life hiding."

I looked at him.

"I know."

"Then stop looking at me like I'm made of glass."

Despite everything, I smiled.

He was still my father.

Stubborn.

Proud.

And determined to remain independent.

But I couldn't ignore the risks.

We worked with Rachel to preserve the remaining documents and share relevant information with authorities.

Then something unexpected happened.

Daniel Price contacted me.

Vanessa's brother.

He called from an unfamiliar number.

"Marcus?"

I recognized his voice immediately.

"What do you want?"

He sounded nervous.

"I need to speak with you."

"Speak to my attorney."

He hesitated.

"I think Vanessa is in trouble."

My chest tightened.

"With Raymond?"

Silence.

Then he whispered, "You know about him."

I took a slow breath.

"Daniel, if you have information about wrongdoing, contact the investigators."

He sounded frightened.

"Raymond isn't who Vanessa thinks he is."

I closed my eyes.

"What does that mean?"

Daniel explained that Raymond had approached Vanessa several years earlier.

He promised to help her build a property investment company.

He told her the Bennett trust held assets that were being mismanaged.

He claimed the family would eventually benefit from restructuring.

Vanessa believed him.

At least, that was Daniel's explanation.

I remained silent.

Then I asked, "Did you forge my father's signature?"

Daniel began breathing heavily.

"Marcus..."

"Answer me."

He whispered, "I notarized documents I shouldn't have."

My stomach tightened.

"Did Dad appear before you?"

"No."

I closed my eyes.

There it was.

The admission.

Daniel began crying.

"Vanessa told me Arthur had already agreed."

I stared ahead.

"Then why didn't you verify it?"

He didn't answer.

I continued.

"You were supposed to verify the signature."

"I know."

His voice broke.

"I made a terrible mistake."

I thought about my father.

The slap.

The humiliation.

The way he flinched when I approached him.

And now another man wanted forgiveness for helping put him at risk.

I took a slow breath.

"Daniel, you need to tell the investigators everything."

He hesitated.

"Raymond will come after me."

"Then tell them that too."

He began crying harder.

I ended the call after arranging for Rachel to contact his attorney.

The following day, Daniel provided a formal statement.

He admitted notarizing the disputed power of attorney without witnessing Dad sign.

He also acknowledged helping Vanessa collect documents.

But he claimed he had not known the full extent of the financing plan.

Investigators would determine what his actions meant legally.

His cooperation provided another piece of the puzzle.

Then Rachel uncovered something important.

Raymond had been using several companies to attract investors.

Some promised high returns from property developments.

Others offered financing services.

The records showed transfers between the companies.

Several transactions required closer examination.

Then we learned that Vanessa had received far less control than she believed.

Bluecrest Property Holdings was registered in her name.

But its operating agreement gave Raymond's company significant financial rights if the planned acquisition failed.

I stared at the document.

"She could lose everything?"

Rachel nodded cautiously.

"Potentially, depending on the enforceability of the agreement."

I felt a bitter sadness.

Vanessa had tried to take control of my father's properties.

But she may have been setting herself up to lose control of her own company.

I didn't feel sorry enough to excuse what she'd done.

But I began to understand how Raymond operated.

He found people who wanted something badly.

Then he convinced them he could provide it.

For my mother, he'd promised business growth.

For Vanessa, wealth and control.

For Daniel, easy fees.

And for me, through Vanessa, the illusion of a happy marriage.

I looked at Rachel.

"How do we stop him?"

"We provide the evidence and let the investigation proceed."

I nodded.

It wasn't the dramatic answer I wanted.

But it was the right one.

That afternoon, Vanessa contacted me through her attorney.

She wanted to meet.

Rachel arranged a supervised conversation with counsel present.

Vanessa arrived wearing a simple black dress.

Her curls were pulled back.

She looked exhausted.

When she saw me, she began crying.

"Marcus."

I remained seated.

She sat across from me.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then she whispered, "I'm sorry."

I stared at her.

"For what?"

She looked confused.

I leaned forward.

"Tell me exactly what you're sorry for."

Tears filled her eyes.

"For lying."

"About what?"

She swallowed.

"The camera."

I waited.

She continued.

"The documents."

I looked at her.

"And my father?"

Her face crumpled.

"I never wanted you to hit him."

I felt anger rise.

"But you wanted me to believe he attacked you."

She nodded slowly.

I took a breath.

"Why?"

She looked down.

"Because he wouldn't sign."

I stared at her.

She continued.

"Raymond said Arthur was the only obstacle."

My stomach tightened.

"So you tried to make him look dangerous."

Vanessa began sobbing.

"I thought if you believed he was unstable, you'd convince him to let me manage the properties."

I felt sick.

She had used my love for her against my love for Dad.

She had turned my anger into a weapon.

And I had allowed it.

I looked at her.

"Did you know I would hit him?"

She shook her head.

"No."

Then she whispered, "I thought you'd throw him out."

I stared at her.

That answer chilled me.

She hadn't planned for the slap.

She had planned for something else.

She wanted Dad removed from the house.

Isolated.

Discredited.

Then she could pressure the trust administrator.

I closed my eyes.

Vanessa continued.

"Raymond said we could make millions."

I looked at her.

"And you believed him."

She nodded.

"He promised we'd never have to worry about money again."

I felt tears rise.

"Vanessa, we weren't struggling."

She looked away.

"I wanted more."

I stared at her.

For five years, I'd worked hard to provide a beautiful home.

We traveled.

We lived comfortably.

We had plans for children.

But none of it had been enough.

Then she said something unexpected.

"Marcus, Raymond has the documents."

I sat up.

"What documents?"

"The ones from the house."

"Where?"

She hesitated.

"His office."

Rachel leaned forward.

"Do you know whether he still has them?"

Vanessa nodded.

"He told me he was going to destroy them."

My stomach tightened.

"Why?"

She looked frightened.

"Because your mother's records connect him to an old fraud investigation."

I stared at her.

Then she whispered, "And Marcus, there's something else."

I waited.

She covered her face.

"Raymond knew your mother was investigating him before she died."

My blood ran cold.

"What are you saying?"

Vanessa looked up.

"He told me your mother had been asking too many questions."

I felt the room tilt.

My mother had died after a long illness.

I'd never questioned the cause.

But Vanessa's next words made every muscle in my body tighten.

"Raymond said her death was the only reason he escaped the investigation."

May you like

I stared at her.

For the first time, I wondered how much of my family's history I truly understood.
