Surprise

Chapter 1

My wife slapped herself across the face, ripped her own dress, and threw herself onto the floor just seconds before I walked into the living room.

Then she screamed that my seventy-year-old father had attacked her.

And I believed her.

The worst mistake of my life happened in less than five seconds.

My name is Marcus Bennett.

I was thirty-six years old, a construction company owner, and the only son of a man who had spent his entire life teaching me to respect others.

My father, Arthur Bennett, had raised me almost entirely on his own after my mother died when I was eleven.

He worked long hours at an auto repair shop.

He skipped vacations.

He wore the same winter coat for eight years so I could attend college.

And when I started my construction business, he gave me his life savings.

I owed that man everything.

Yet on one terrible afternoon, I raised my hand against him.

I had just returned home from a meeting when I heard Vanessa screaming.

"MARCUS! HELP ME!"

I dropped my keys and rushed through the hallway.

What I saw stopped me cold.

My wife was lying on the marble floor.

Her beautiful royal-blue dress was torn near the neckline.

One side of her face was bright red.

Tears streamed down her cheeks.

And my father stood several feet away, frozen in disbelief.

His hands were raised slightly.

His mouth hung open.

"Marcus," Vanessa sobbed. "Your father attacked me!"

Something exploded inside my chest.

I looked at Dad.

"What did you do?"

He shook his head.

"Son, I didn't—"

I didn't let him finish.

I charged toward him.

"You put your hands on my wife?"

"Marcus, listen!"

I slapped him.

The sound cracked through our living room.

My father's head turned sharply.

He stumbled backward into the coffee table and grabbed its edge to keep from falling.

For one horrible moment, everything became silent.

I stared at my hand.

Then at his face.

A red mark spread across his cheek.

My father slowly straightened.

He looked at me with an expression I had never seen before.

Not anger.

Not hatred.

Something much worse.

Heartbreak.

"Son," he whispered, "I never touched her."

Behind me, Vanessa continued sobbing.

"He's lying, Marcus! He grabbed me!"

I turned toward her.

She covered her face.

"Please don't let him hurt me again."

My father looked at her.

Then back at me.

"Marcus, I've never laid a hand on a woman in my life."

I knew that.

God help me, I knew that.

My father was the man who taught me that anger never justified hurting someone.

He used to tell me, "A real man can control his hands even when he can't control his heart."

Yet somehow, standing there with Vanessa crying behind me, I'd forgotten every lesson he ever taught me.

"Dad, why would she lie?"

The question came out harsher than I intended.

He stared at me.

Then he slowly raised one trembling finger.

"Check the camera."

I frowned.

"What?"

He pointed toward the ceiling.

"The hallway camera."

I followed his hand.

A small security camera was mounted above the doorway between the living room and hallway.

I'd installed it six months earlier after several packages disappeared from our porch.

It recorded movement in the hallway and most of the living room.

Vanessa had complained about it.

She said cameras made our house feel like a prison.

I'd promised her it was only for security.

Now my father was pointing directly at it.

"Check the footage," he repeated.

Behind me, Vanessa suddenly stopped crying.

It lasted only a second.

But I noticed.

Her expression changed.

Then she began sobbing again.

"Marcus, please don't make me relive it."

I looked at her.

Something felt wrong.

"Vanessa, if Dad attacked you, the recording will show it."

She swallowed.

"Why don't you believe me?"

"I just want to understand what happened."

Her tears intensified.

"So now I'm a liar?"

I didn't answer.

I pulled out my phone.

Opened the security application.

Selected the living room camera.

Then I moved the recording back several minutes.

My hands were shaking.

On the screen, my father stood near the sofa, holding a small leather folder.

Vanessa entered wearing her royal-blue dress.

They appeared to be arguing.

The camera didn't record clear audio from that distance.

Then something unbelievable happened.

Vanessa stepped backward.

She looked toward the hallway.

She checked her reflection in the dark television screen.

Then she lifted her right hand.

And slapped herself across the face.

I stopped breathing.

On the recording, she grabbed the neckline of her dress.

Pulled hard.

The fabric tore.

Then she dropped onto the floor.

Seconds later, I appeared in the doorway.

The footage showed everything.

Every movement.

Every lie.

I watched myself charge toward my father.

Watched my hand strike his face.

Watched him stumble backward.

I felt sick.

The room spun around me.

I replayed the recording.

Then again.

I couldn't believe what I was seeing.

My wife had attacked herself.

She had torn her own dress.

She had screamed that my father hurt her.

And I had done exactly what she wanted.

I slowly lowered my phone.

Vanessa stared at me.

Her face had lost all its color.

"Marcus..."

I turned toward her.

My voice sounded unfamiliar.

"You made me hit my seventy-year-old father."

She shook her head.

"No, baby, you don't understand."

I stared at her.

"What don't I understand?"

She stepped closer.

"Your father was threatening me."

"Then why did you slap yourself?"

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

"Why did you rip your own dress?"

"Marcus, please."

"WHY?"

My voice echoed through the room.

Vanessa stepped backward.

My father remained beside the coffee table.

He hadn't moved.

I looked at him.

"Dad..."

He didn't answer immediately.

I felt tears burning behind my eyes.

"I'm sorry."

His expression didn't change.

I took one step toward him.

He flinched.

That tiny movement destroyed me.

My father was afraid I might hit him again.

I stopped.

I couldn't breathe.

"Dad, I didn't know."

He looked at me for a long moment.

Then he spoke quietly.

"That's the problem, son."

I lowered my eyes.

"You didn't want to know."

The words hit harder than anything he could have done physically.

I began crying.

Behind me, Vanessa whispered, "Can we please talk privately?"

Dad looked toward her.

Then he shook his head.

"No."

He turned back to me.

"Marcus, keep watching."

I looked up.

"What?"

He pointed toward my phone.

"That wasn't the first time."

I stared at him.

My stomach tightened.

"What do you mean?"

His face was filled with exhaustion.

"She's been doing things while you're away."

Vanessa rushed forward.

"Arthur, stop!"

Dad ignored her.

"Look at the recordings from last Thursday."

I looked at my phone.

A second video appeared in the event history.

Before I could press play, Vanessa lunged toward me.

"NO!"

She grabbed for the phone.

I stepped backward.

For the first time since we'd married, I saw genuine terror in her eyes.

And suddenly, I understood something.

Whatever was on that second recording frightened her more than the truth I'd already discovered.

I looked at my father.

"What happened last Thursday?"

He swallowed.

May you like

Then he whispered the words that would change our family forever.

"That's the day she tried to make me sign away everything your mother left us."
