Surprise

Chapter 4

Aisha had left Noah a trust.

I hadn't told many people about it.

Before she died, my first wife arranged for life insurance proceeds and family savings to be protected for our son.

The trust was worth approximately seven hundred thousand dollars.

It was meant for his education.

His medical needs.

His future.

I managed the money as trustee.

But the money belonged to Noah.

Vanessa knew that.

I'd told her before we married.

At the time, she smiled.

"That boy is lucky to have a father who thinks ahead."

Now I wondered whether she'd been thinking about something else.

I drove directly to Rachel's office.

She had already arranged for a financial attorney to join us.

His name was Daniel Brooks.

He reviewed the trust agreement.

Then he looked at the placement documents.

"Marcus, the language here is unusual."

I leaned forward.

"How?"

He pointed toward a section.

"The proposed authorization includes authority to approve certain expenditures from funds held for Noah's benefit."

My stomach tightened.

"Why would a temporary caregiver need that?"

Daniel shook his head.

"That's exactly what we need to investigate."

I looked at Rachel.

"Could Vanessa take his money?"

"Not simply by submitting these papers," she said. "The trust has protections."

I exhaled.

"But someone may have been trying to create a route to control."

I stared at the document.

My wife hadn't simply packed a suitcase.

She'd arranged meetings.

Changed school records.

Prepared authorization forms.

And tried to send my son somewhere without telling me.

I felt sick.

"How long was she planning this?"

Rachel looked at me.

"We need the records before we can answer that."

I nodded.

Then Daniel asked a question.

"Did Vanessa ever request access to Noah's trust?"

I thought back.

She had.

Several times.

At first, she suggested combining family finances.

Then she complained that the trust wasn't being used enough.

She said Noah needed a more disciplined upbringing.

And two months earlier, she'd asked whether she could become a co-trustee.

I'd refused.

She became furious.

"Yes," I answered.

Daniel made a note.

"Did she have access to your financial files?"

"Some household records. Not the trust account itself."

"Good."

But something about his expression worried me.

After the meeting, I went home.

Angela was sitting with Noah at the kitchen table.

They were drawing superheroes.

Noah looked up.

"Daddy!"

I smiled.

"Hey, champion."

He ran toward me.

I hugged him.

"How was school?"

"Good."

I looked at his drawing.

"Who's that?"

He grinned.

"Super Dad."

I laughed.

"Super Dad?"

He nodded.

"He saves kids."

My throat tightened.

I looked at Angela.

Her eyes were wet.

I knelt beside Noah.

"Buddy, I'm always going to do my best to protect you."

He hugged me.

"I know."

Those two words meant everything.

After dinner, Angela helped Noah with his homework while I reviewed our home security footage.

We had cameras covering the driveway, front entrance, and downstairs hallway.

I hadn't checked the recordings from the previous month.

I began with the afternoon Noah said Vanessa took him to Evelyn's house.

At 3:42, Vanessa's SUV entered the driveway.

Noah climbed out.

He looked unhappy.

Vanessa carried a folder.

They went inside.

The next morning, at 8:16, Vanessa entered my study while I was at work.

She remained inside for twenty-three minutes.

When she emerged, she held several sheets of paper.

I felt my stomach twist.

My study contained copies of Noah's trust documents.

I continued watching.

Two days later, a woman arrived at the house.

She wore a dark blazer and carried a laptop bag.

Vanessa greeted her.

They entered my study.

They remained there for more than an hour.

I saved the footage.

Then I searched online for Melissa Grant.

A photograph appeared.

The woman in the blazer.

I stared at the screen.

Melissa had been inside my home.

Reviewing documents.

Possibly discussing my son's future.

Without my knowledge.

I called Rachel.

"Melissa Grant visited my house."

"What?"

"I have video."

"Save it."

"I already did."

She paused.

"Marcus, don't contact her directly yet."

I nodded.

"Okay."

The next day, investigators followed up on the placement paperwork.

Patricia Coleman provided additional information about how she'd been hired.

She explained that Melissa Grant had arranged the transportation.

Patricia believed the placement had been approved.

She said she'd been instructed to take Noah to Evelyn Carter's home.

I felt cold.

"Did Evelyn know I hadn't agreed?"

Patricia shook her head.

"I don't think so."

I wanted to believe her.

But I couldn't ignore what Noah had experienced.

That afternoon, Rachel called again.

"Marcus, we've identified the organization."

My heart pounded.

"What organization?"

"Family Pathways Consulting."

I frowned.

"Is it a licensed child-placement agency?"

Rachel hesitated.

"Based on the information available, it appears to be a private consulting business, not a state-licensed child welfare agency."

I felt sick.

"So what were they doing?"

"That's what investigators are examining."

I rubbed my forehead.

Then Rachel continued.

"There's another issue."

"What?"

"The business has been involved in several disputes concerning questionable family authorization documents."

I stared at the wall.

"Other children?"

"Potentially."

My hands began trembling.

The thought made me sick.

My son might not have been the only child whose family was being manipulated.

Then Rachel asked something unexpected.

"Marcus, did Vanessa ever mention a woman named Evelyn Carter before?"

I thought carefully.

"No."

"Are you sure?"

I closed my eyes.

Then I remembered a conversation from the previous Christmas.

Vanessa had mentioned an older woman who wanted to foster a child.

She said the woman had plenty of money and a large house.

I'd barely paid attention.

Now the memory chilled me.

"She did mention someone."

Rachel paused.

"What did she say?"

"That a woman she knew wanted a child to raise."

There was silence.

May you like

Then Rachel spoke quietly.

"Marcus, we need to investigate whether your wife was promised anything in exchange for arranging Noah's placement."
