Surprise

Chapter 1

The day my wife tried to send my eight-year-old son away, I came home seven minutes earlier than she expected.

Seven minutes.

That was all that stood between my little boy and a yellow SUV waiting in our driveway.

I will never forget what I saw when I pulled onto our street.

My wife, Vanessa, was dragging a bright pink suitcase toward the open back door of the SUV.

My son, Noah, stood beside her, crying so hard he could barely breathe.

His little hands were clenched against his navy T-shirt.

His face was soaked with tears.

And Vanessa was pulling him toward the vehicle as though he were a piece of unwanted furniture.

I slammed my truck into park.

"VANESSA!"

She turned.

The moment she saw me, her expression changed.

But she didn't let go of the suitcase.

I ran across the driveway.

"What are you doing with my son?"

I grabbed the suitcase and pulled it away from her.

Then I scooped Noah against my chest.

He wrapped both arms around my neck.

"Daddy!"

His voice broke.

I held him tighter.

"I'm here, buddy. I've got you."

He buried his face against my shoulder.

Vanessa folded her arms.

"You're making a scene, Marcus."

I stared at her.

"A scene?"

She gestured toward the SUV.

"I packed his things. He's leaving today."

For a second, I couldn't understand the words.

Leaving?

My son?

My eight-year-old little boy?

I looked toward the open vehicle.

There was a booster seat in the back.

A large black duffel bag sat behind it.

And a woman I didn't recognize was sitting behind the steering wheel.

I turned back toward Vanessa.

"You packed my child's bags while I was at work?"

She rolled her eyes.

"Someone had to make a decision."

I felt my chest tighten.

"What decision?"

She pointed at Noah.

"I'm tired of him coming between us."

I stared at her.

Noah began trembling.

Vanessa continued.

"Every vacation revolves around him. Every weekend revolves around him. Every time I want something, you tell me Noah needs you."

My voice dropped.

"He's eight."

"And I'm your wife!"

Her words echoed across the driveway.

I glanced at the neighbors' windows.

Several curtains had moved.

But I didn't care.

I cared about the little boy shaking against my chest.

I set Noah down behind me.

He immediately grabbed my sweatshirt.

I placed one hand protectively against his shoulder.

"Where were you taking him?"

Vanessa lifted her chin.

"Somewhere he'll be taken care of."

"Where?"

She looked toward the SUV.

"That isn't important right now."

I took a step forward.

"It's the only thing that's important."

She sighed dramatically.

"Marcus, I'm done arguing."

Then she said the words that ended our marriage.

"Either he goes, or I do."

I stared at her.

For nearly three years, I'd tried to convince myself Vanessa loved Noah.

When she criticized his eating habits, I called it discipline.

When she complained about his toys, I called it adjusting to family life.

When she insisted he spend more time alone, I told myself she needed privacy.

I had made excuse after excuse.

And now my son was standing behind me, terrified that someone might take him away.

I felt something inside me become completely still.

"You want me to choose between my wife and my child?"

Vanessa folded her arms.

"Yes."

She looked almost confident.

"Choose."

Noah began sobbing.

He wrapped both arms around my waist.

"Daddy, please."

I turned immediately.

I knelt and held his face gently.

"Hey. Look at me."

His eyes were swollen.

"Am I leaving?"

My heart broke.

"No."

He swallowed.

"Promise?"

I pulled him into my arms.

"I promise."

Then I stood and faced Vanessa.

"Easy choice."

She frowned.

"What?"

"My son stays."

Her confident expression disappeared.

I picked up the pink suitcase.

I pushed it back toward her feet.

"You're the one leaving."

Vanessa stared at me.

"You can't be serious."

"I have never been more serious."

She laughed bitterly.

"You're throwing away our marriage over one spoiled child?"

I moved closer.

"Don't call him that."

She opened her mouth.

I continued.

"That little boy lost his mother when he was five. He's been trying to feel safe ever since."

Vanessa looked away.

"And instead of helping him, you've spent years making him feel unwanted."

She rolled her eyes.

"You're exaggerating."

I looked down at Noah.

He was still holding my sweatshirt.

Then he whispered something that made my blood run cold.

"Daddy, she tried before."

I froze.

"What?"

He looked frightened.

Vanessa moved immediately.

"Noah, be quiet."

I stepped between them.

"Don't speak to him."

Her face tightened.

I knelt again.

"Buddy, what do you mean she tried before?"

Noah's lips trembled.

He glanced toward the SUV.

Then toward Vanessa.

"I wasn't supposed to tell."

I felt my heart pounding.

"Tell me what?"

He began crying harder.

Vanessa suddenly reached for her phone.

"Marcus, this conversation is over."

I looked up.

"No. It isn't."

She stepped backward.

I stood slowly.

"And before you go, you're going to explain why my son says this isn't the first time."

Vanessa's face went pale.

For the first time that afternoon, she looked genuinely afraid.

I stared at her.

Then Noah whispered behind me.

"Daddy, last time she took me somewhere, she said you didn't want me anymore."

Everything inside me stopped.

I turned toward him.

"Where did she take you?"

He covered his mouth.

Vanessa suddenly shouted.

"NOAH!"

I moved in front of my son.

"Don't you dare."

May you like

Then Noah said something so quietly that I almost missed it.

"She took me to a house where they told me I was getting a new family."
