Chapter 1

My ten-year-old daughter accused my nineteen-year-old son of entering her bedroom and doing something terrible.
My wife believed her immediately.
My son swore he was innocent.
And for thirty terrifying seconds, I thought my family was about to fall apart.
Then my son handed me his phone.
"Check the hallway camera, Dad."
What I saw changed everything.
But the most frightening part wasn't what my daughter had done.
It was what she was trying to hide.
My name is Marcus Bennett.
I was forty-three years old, the owner of a successful construction company in Atlanta, and the father of two children.
Jordan was nineteen.
He was my son from my first marriage.
Maya was ten.
She was my daughter with my wife, Claire.
I loved them both more than anything.
Our family lived in a beautiful two-story house with cream-colored walls, polished hardwood floors, and family photographs lining the staircase.
From the outside, we looked happy.
And for a long time, I believed we were.
That Saturday afternoon, I was sitting in my study reviewing construction estimates when I heard Maya scream.
"HE DID IT!"
I jumped from my chair.
Her voice came from the living room.
"HE CAME INTO MY ROOM!"
By the time I reached the doorway, Maya was standing near the staircase.
Her neat cornrow braids were slightly loose.
She wore her favorite black hoodie.
Tears covered her cheeks.
She was pointing directly at Jordan.
My son stood several feet away wearing his green varsity jacket.
He looked completely stunned.
Claire rushed toward Maya and pulled her behind her.
"Baby, come here!"
Maya grabbed her mother's sweater.
"Mommy, I told him to leave!"
Jordan shook his head.
"That's not what happened!"
I stepped between them.
"Everybody stop."
Nobody listened.
Claire pointed at Jordan.
"Why would you go into your little sister's room?"
Jordan threw his hands up.
"I didn't!"
Maya began crying harder.
Claire wrapped both arms around her.
"You're safe, sweetheart."
I looked at Jordan.
His hands were shaking.
"Son, tell me what happened."
He swallowed.
"Dad, please listen."
"I'm listening."
He looked toward Maya.
"She's leaving something out."
Claire immediately snapped.
"Why would she lie?"
Jordan's expression changed.
"Because I caught her doing something she wasn't supposed to!"
The room went silent.
I looked toward Maya.
For a split second, her face changed.
The anger disappeared.
Her eyes widened.
She looked frightened.
Not of Jordan.
Of what he might say next.
I noticed.
"Maya."
She lowered her eyes.
I knelt slightly.
"Sweetheart, what did Jordan catch you doing?"
Claire tightened her grip around her.
"Marcus, don't interrogate her!"
I looked at my wife.
"I'm asking a question."
"She's upset!"
"I can see that."
Maya pressed her face against Claire's shoulder.
Jordan took one step forward.
"Dad, I swear I'm telling the truth."
I held up my hand.
"Stay there."
He stopped.
I wasn't going to let anyone pressure Maya.
But I wasn't going to condemn Jordan without understanding what happened either.
Claire glared at him.
"You've always resented your sister."
Jordan looked wounded.
"What?"
"Ever since she was born, you've acted like she gets everything."
His face crumpled.
"That's not fair."
I turned toward Claire.
"Enough."
She stared at me.
I continued.
"We're not deciding who's telling the truth by bringing up every argument they've ever had."
Jordan swallowed.
Then reached into his pocket.
"Fine."
He pulled out his phone.
"You don't have to believe me."
I watched his fingers move across the screen.
"Check the hallway camera."
My heart began pounding.
We had installed security cameras after a package theft six months earlier.
One camera covered the upstairs hallway.
It faced the staircase and both bedroom doors.
There were no cameras inside the bedrooms.
Jordan had permission to view the hallway recording because he'd helped me install the system.
I reached for his phone.
Claire suddenly became quiet.
Maya lifted her head.
I noticed her watching the screen.
Jordan opened the saved recording.
The timestamp showed 2:17 p.m.
I recognized the upstairs hallway immediately.
Maya appeared first.
She walked toward Jordan's bedroom.
She looked over her shoulder.
Then disappeared through his doorway.
I frowned.
"Why was she entering your room?"
Jordan shook his head.
"Keep watching."
Several seconds passed.
Then Jordan appeared at the top of the staircase.
He approached his bedroom.
Stopped.
And stepped backward.
Maya came into view again.
She was standing near his doorway.
Her hands were hidden behind her back.
Jordan raised both palms.
He appeared to be telling her to stop.
The footage showed him backing away.
Not advancing toward her.
I looked up.
"Maya?"
My daughter stared at the phone.
Her face had gone pale.
Claire opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
I looked back at the screen.
Jordan whispered beside me.
"Dad, that's not the worst part."
My stomach tightened.
"What do you mean?"
He pointed toward the playback bar.
"There's another minute."
Before I could touch the screen, Maya lunged forward.
"DADDY, NO!"
Her little hand reached toward the phone.
I lifted it out of reach.
Claire grabbed Maya protectively.
"Marcus, stop!"
I looked at them.
Both were frightened.
Jordan stood motionless beside the staircase.
I stared at the frozen image of my daughter's small figure outside his bedroom.
Then I asked quietly,
"What happens next?"
Jordan's voice broke.
"You're going to see why she was so desperate to make me look guilty."
I looked at Maya.
She was crying again.
May you like
But this time, she wasn't pointing at her brother.
She was staring at the phone as though it contained the most frightening secret in the world.
