Surprise

Chapter 5

The security footage arrived the next morning.

Denise brought it to my house.

Elaine sat beside me in the living room.

Daniel was there too, accompanied by his attorney.

Nobody spoke as the video began.

The camera showed the garden terrace.

Vanessa stood beside the flower arch.

Elaine approached from the ballroom.

She smiled.

Then reached toward the train of Vanessa's gown.

The next moment happened exactly as I remembered.

Vanessa shoved Elaine backward with both hands.

My wife fell into the muddy flowerbed.

The footage was clear.

There was no slipping.

No accident.

No misunderstanding.

Elaine began crying.

Daniel covered his face.

I felt anger rising.

Then the video continued.

Vanessa looked toward the ballroom.

She smiled.

Then she adjusted her gown as though nothing had happened.

I stared at the screen.

"She smiled."

Nobody answered.

I looked at Daniel.

"She pushed your mother and smiled."

His eyes filled.

"I see it."

Elaine stood abruptly.

"I can't watch anymore."

I immediately paused the video.

She walked toward the window.

Her shoulders shook.

I followed her.

"Sweetheart?"

She turned.

Her face was wet with tears.

"She wanted me to fall."

I nodded.

"Yes."

Elaine covered her mouth.

"She wanted everyone to see."

I held her.

For a long moment, she cried against my chest.

Then she whispered:

"Why does she hate me?"

I closed my eyes.

I didn't know how to answer.

Because Elaine had never been cruel to Vanessa.

She welcomed her.

Bought her gifts.

Helped plan the wedding.

And defended her whenever relatives complained.

But Vanessa seemed to view every kindness as something she could exploit.

Denise approached.

"Elaine, there's something important we need to discuss."

My wife wiped her eyes.

"What?"

"The evidence suggests there may have been an effort to portray you as emotionally unstable."

Elaine looked confused.

"Why?"

Denise explained the emails Julian provided.

Celeste had written about creating a public confrontation.

Vanessa responded that Elaine would become emotional and make herself look unreasonable.

Another message suggested using the incident to question whether Elaine should be involved in managing family property.

I felt sick.

Elaine stared at Denise.

"They wanted me to look crazy?"

Denise answered carefully.

"That appears to have been discussed."

My wife began trembling.

I reached for her.

She stepped backward.

For a moment, I thought she was frightened of me.

Then I realized she was overwhelmed.

"I need air."

I nodded.

"Of course."

She walked onto the patio.

I looked toward Daniel.

He was crying.

"Dad..."

I raised my hand.

"Not now."

He lowered his head.

I wanted to comfort him.

He was my son.

But I couldn't ignore the pain he'd caused by staying silent.

Denise continued reviewing the evidence.

The emails raised serious concerns.

But we still needed to establish which documents had been submitted and whether anyone had relied on false claims.

I nodded.

I wanted justice.

Not reckless accusations.

That afternoon, Daniel asked to speak with me privately.

We sat in my study.

He looked exhausted.

"Dad, I don't know how to fix this."

I stared at him.

"You can't fix it with one apology."

He nodded.

"I know."

I leaned forward.

"Daniel, what happened to the boy your mother and I raised?"

His face crumpled.

He began crying.

"I don't know."

I waited.

He wiped his cheeks.

"Vanessa kept telling me I had to choose between her and Mom."

I felt my chest tighten.

"And you believed that?"

He nodded.

"She said if I defended Mom, it proved I wasn't ready to be a husband."

I shook my head.

"Being a husband doesn't mean abandoning your parents."

He looked down.

"And being a son doesn't mean letting your wife insult them."

I paused.

Daniel looked up.

"I know."

I took a breath.

"Son, love should never require you to become dishonest."

He nodded.

"I understand."

I studied his face.

"Do you?"

He swallowed.

"I'm starting to."

Then he told me something unexpected.

"Vanessa wanted me to sign a business partnership agreement."

My stomach tightened.

"What agreement?"

"She said we'd be co-owners of V&C Luxury Events after the wedding."

I frowned.

"Did you sign?"

He shook his head.

"No."

Relief washed through me.

Then he continued.

"But she was furious."

I looked at him.

"Why?"

"Because she said I was humiliating her by questioning her business."

I felt sick.

Daniel covered his face.

"She threatened to call off the wedding."

I leaned back.

"And that's why you let her push your mother?"

His eyes filled.

"Yes."

I stared at him.

For a moment, I couldn't speak.

Then I said quietly:

"Daniel, that's a choice you'll have to live with."

He nodded.

"I know."

Over the following weeks, the investigation expanded.

Julian provided original electronic records.

The lender confirmed that the lake house loan had not closed.

Denise notified the appropriate institutions that Elaine disputed the signature.

The attempted transaction was placed under review.

Meanwhile, Vanessa and Celeste retained attorneys.

They denied fraudulent intent.

They claimed the invoices were business misunderstandings.

And they argued that the garden incident was a private family dispute.

But the security footage told a different story.

Then one afternoon, a detective contacted us.

Her name was Angela Brooks.

She wanted statements from Elaine and me.

We met at Denise's office.

Elaine was nervous.

I held her hand.

Detective Brooks asked her to describe the fall.

My wife spoke softly.

She explained that she'd tried to straighten Vanessa's train.

That Vanessa turned suddenly.

That she pushed with both hands.

And that Elaine fell into the wet flowerbed.

Her voice shook.

Then she began crying.

The detective waited patiently.

When Elaine finished, she asked whether Vanessa had threatened her before.

Elaine hesitated.

Then nodded.

"She told me if I interfered with the wedding, I'd regret it."

My stomach tightened.

"When?"

"The week before."

I stared at my wife.

"You never told me."

She looked ashamed.

"I didn't want to upset Daniel."

My heart broke.

I squeezed her hand.

"You should never have had to keep that to yourself."

The detective made a note.

Then she asked about the financial documents.

Elaine confirmed she had never signed the property agreement.

She had never authorized the lake house as collateral.

And she had never agreed to provide money to V&C Luxury Events.

I watched her speak.

At first, her voice trembled.

Then it grew stronger.

By the end, she looked directly at the detective.

"I want the truth documented."

I felt proud.

My wife had spent weeks feeling humiliated.

Now she was reclaiming her voice.

That evening, Denise called.

"Richard, there's been another development."

I sat straighter.

"What?"

"The lender has located the person who submitted the lake house documents."

My stomach tightened.

"Who?"

Denise paused.

"Celeste."

I closed my eyes.

Then she continued.

"But there's more."

I waited.

"The application included a statement claiming Elaine had been evaluated by a medical professional."

My heart stopped.

"What?"

Denise's voice became serious.

"The statement suggested she was experiencing memory problems and required assistance with financial decisions."

I felt cold.

Elaine had never undergone such an evaluation.

She was healthy.

Independent.

And fully capable of managing her affairs.

I looked toward the kitchen.

My wife was preparing tea.

Then Denise added:

"Richard, the doctor's name on the statement doesn't match any licensed physician we've been able to verify."

I stared at the phone.

And suddenly, I understood how far Vanessa and Celeste had been willing to go.

May you like

They hadn't just tried to steal money.

They had tried to make my wife appear incapable of protecting herself.
