Surprise

Chapter 4

I stared at Daniel.

"Vanessa asked how much you would inherit?"

He nodded.

Elaine covered her mouth.

My stomach tightened.

"When?"

Daniel looked down.

"About two months ago."

I took a breath.

"What did you tell her?"

He hesitated.

I felt anger rising.

"Daniel."

"I told her you and Mom had everything in a family trust."

I closed my eyes.

"And?"

"She asked who controlled it."

I stared at him.

"What did you say?"

"I told her you were the primary trustee."

Elaine began crying quietly.

I reached for her hand.

Then I looked back at our son.

"Did Vanessa ask for access?"

He nodded slowly.

"She said we should understand our financial future before getting married."

I felt sick.

"Daniel, financial planning is reasonable. Secretly using your parents' property isn't."

His eyes filled.

"I know."

I studied him.

For years, Daniel had been a thoughtful young man.

He worked hard.

Helped friends.

Volunteered at community events.

But since meeting Vanessa, he'd become increasingly defensive.

He stopped visiting.

Missed family dinners.

And dismissed Elaine whenever she expressed concerns.

I had assumed marriage preparations were stressful.

Now I wondered how much manipulation had been happening behind closed doors.

"Daniel, why didn't you defend your mother today?"

He looked away.

"I didn't want Vanessa to cancel the wedding."

Elaine began sobbing.

I felt my heart break.

He continued.

"Every time we argued, she threatened to leave."

I stared at him.

"And you were afraid she'd leave?"

He nodded.

"Yes."

I took a breath.

"Son, that's not love."

He covered his face.

"I know that now."

Elaine looked at him.

Her voice trembled.

"Daniel, I wasn't trying to ruin your wedding."

He looked up.

"Mom..."

"I only wanted to straighten Vanessa's dress."

Tears streamed down her cheeks.

"I was so happy for you."

Daniel began crying.

He moved toward her.

She flinched.

He stopped immediately.

That small movement devastated him.

I could see it.

His own mother was afraid to be touched after what happened.

"Mom, I'm so sorry."

Elaine looked down.

"I need time."

He nodded.

"I understand."

A knock sounded at the door.

Denise entered with a younger attorney.

She introduced him as Jordan Ellis.

Jordan carried a folder.

He looked serious.

"Mr. Bennett, we've received copies of the documents from Julian."

I stood.

"Good."

Denise looked toward Daniel.

"Your son should obtain independent legal advice before discussing any documents he signed."

Daniel nodded.

"I understand."

I appreciated her professionalism.

I didn't want my anger to lead us into another mistake.

Denise explained that the attempted loan against the lake house had not been completed.

The lender had requested verification from Elaine.

That request prevented the transaction from closing.

I exhaled.

Then Denise continued.

"We've also identified several questionable wedding invoices."

My stomach tightened.

"How many?"

"Eleven."

I stared at her.

"Eleven?"

She nodded.

"Some appear to duplicate legitimate services. Others describe services that were never provided."

I closed my eyes.

"How much money?"

"Approximately ninety thousand dollars in payments are under review."

Elaine looked horrified.

"We paid for all of this?"

I squeezed her hand.

"Yes."

Denise continued.

"The investigation will determine whether those payments were obtained through fraud."

I nodded.

Then I asked the question that had been haunting me.

"Did Vanessa and Celeste plan the humiliation?"

Denise hesitated.

"We don't know."

I looked down.

She continued.

"But the venue may have security footage showing what happened outside."

I took a breath.

"Please preserve it."

"We've requested that."

That evening, Elaine and I left the venue.

Harold drove us home.

We sat quietly in the back seat.

Elaine wore a soft cardigan over the borrowed robe.

Her muddy gown was sealed in a garment bag for documentation.

She looked exhausted.

I reached for her hand.

"Baby?"

She turned.

"Yes?"

"I'm sorry."

Her eyes filled.

"For what?"

"For allowing Vanessa to treat you badly for months."

She looked down.

I continued.

"I kept telling myself Daniel would handle it."

Tears slipped down her cheeks.

"He never did."

I nodded.

"I know."

She squeezed my hand.

"Richard, I don't want to lose our son."

My throat tightened.

"Neither do I."

"But I can't pretend today didn't happen."

I looked at her.

"You don't have to."

She leaned against me.

For the first time since the fall, her breathing began to steady.

When we reached home, I helped her upstairs.

She took a long shower.

I placed fresh pajamas on the bed.

Then I sat beside her until she fell asleep.

Only then did I return to my study.

I opened the wedding contracts.

Every page.

Every payment.

Every change order.

I couldn't believe how much I'd trusted.

How often I'd signed because Daniel said it was important.

How easily I'd allowed generosity to replace judgment.

At midnight, my phone rang.

Julian.

I answered.

"Mr. Bennett?"

His voice sounded frightened.

"Yes?"

"I found another file."

My stomach tightened.

"What kind?"

"An email chain between Vanessa and Celeste."

I sat straighter.

"What does it say?"

He hesitated.

"Mr. Bennett, I think they planned to make Elaine look unstable."

I felt cold.

"What?"

Julian swallowed.

"They were discussing ways to remove her from family financial decisions."

My hands clenched.

"Why?"

He took a breath.

"Because they believed she could stop the property loan."

I stared at the wall.

Then he added something that made my heart pound.

"There's a message from Celeste saying the wedding would be the perfect place to make Elaine lose control."

I closed my eyes.

The muddy flowerbed.

The public humiliation.

Daniel's silence.

Suddenly, everything looked different.

Vanessa hadn't simply lost her temper.

She may have been trying to provoke my wife in front of witnesses.

I looked toward the staircase.

Elaine was sleeping upstairs.

She had no idea how close someone had come to using her pain against her.

I took a breath.

"Julian, send the files to Denise. Don't contact Vanessa or Celeste."

He nodded.

"I will."

After ending the call, I sat alone.

I looked at a photograph on my desk.

Elaine and Daniel at his college graduation.

Both smiling.

Both happy.

I touched the frame.

Then whispered:

May you like

"Son, what have you allowed into our family?"

And I knew the answer would be more painful than anything I'd imagined.
