Chapter 7 - The Recording That Changed Everything

Julian's response was thirty-two pages long.

Thirty-two pages of accusations.

According to his attorney, I was an angry wife trying to punish my husband for an affair.

I had supposedly understood the loan.

Approved the proposed sale.

And changed my mind only after discovering Vanessa.

I read the allegations in Rebecca's office.

By the time I reached the final page, my hands were shaking.

"He makes me sound insane."

Rebecca closed the folder.

"He's presenting a version that benefits him."

"He says I begged him to help manage Crown & Grace."

"Did you?"

"No."

"He says you signed the authorization."

"I didn't."

"He says you threatened to destroy his career."

I remembered what I had said after he cut my hair.

Five days.

"I told him he would face consequences."

Rebecca nodded.

"That's different from authorizing false documents or committing wrongdoing."

I rubbed my temples.

"How do we prove he's lying?"

Rebecca opened another folder.

"The lender's investigation has progressed. We have obtained relevant material through the proper legal process."

She pressed play on an audio recording.

At first, I heard distant voices.

Then Vanessa spoke.

"Are you sure Elena won't interfere?"

My breath caught.

Julian answered.

"She doesn't understand this stuff."

I covered my mouth.

Vanessa laughed softly.

"What if she gets a lawyer?"

"She won't."

"How can you be so sure?"

My husband's voice was casual.

"Because she still thinks I love her."

I felt as though someone had punched me.

Rebecca paused the recording.

"Do you want to continue?"

I nodded.

My throat was too tight to speak.

The recording resumed.

Vanessa asked about the signature on the guarantee.

Julian responded.

"The paperwork is handled. She won't question it."

Vanessa sounded nervous.

"What if someone verifies it?"

"Stop worrying."

Then he said something that shattered the last piece of my old marriage.

"If she gets difficult, I'll make her feel guilty. She always gives in eventually."

I closed my eyes.

For eight years, I had believed our arguments were misunderstandings.

Now I heard him describing how deliberately he had manipulated me.

Vanessa asked another question.

"And after the sale?"

Julian laughed.

"I'll finally be free of her."

I bent forward.

Tears fell onto my knees.

Rebecca stopped the recording.

"Elena."

I couldn't look at her.

"He knew."

My voice broke.

"He knew I loved him."

Rebecca moved closer.

"And he used that love against you."

I wiped my face.

"Play the rest."

She hesitated.

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

The final portion concerned the proposed consulting payment.

Julian and Vanessa discussed how the proceeds would help settle his debts.

There were also references to moving money through Sterling Growth Partners.

The recording did not explain every financial transaction.

But it contradicted his claim that I had willingly managed the arrangement with him.

Rebecca leaned back.

"This is significant evidence. We'll use it carefully, alongside the document examination and financial records."

I stared at the recorder.

"Will they hear it in court?"

"If admitted, yes."

I swallowed.

"Good."

Because I wanted Julian to hear his own words.

I wanted him to understand that his excuses would no longer silence me.

Over the next few weeks, the case moved forward.

The document examiner concluded that the questioned signatures showed characteristics inconsistent with my genuine handwriting.

The notary continued to deny witnessing them.

Financial records showed that Crown & Grace had never received the loan funds.

And the lender's internal review identified inaccurate representations in the application.

Rebecca explained that the civil case and criminal investigation were separate.

One would determine rights, liability, and remedies.

The other would determine whether criminal charges were appropriate.

I listened carefully.

I wanted justice.

But I also wanted it done properly.

Meanwhile, my divorce proceedings began.

Julian reacted by sending flowers to my apartment.

White roses.

My favorite.

For eight years, he had forgotten our anniversary twice.

Now he remembered my favorite flowers.

I left them unopened.

The next day, he sent a letter.

"Elena, I know I've hurt you. But we had good years. Please don't let one mistake destroy everything."

One mistake.

I read those words and almost laughed.

An affair wasn't a single accident.

A forged document wasn't a misunderstanding.

And cutting my hair hadn't been an unfortunate joke.

It had been a choice.

I gave the letter to Rebecca.

Then I blocked Julian from contacting me directly, leaving communications to our attorneys.

That afternoon, Vanessa came to the salon.

I was speaking with Maya when the receptionist called my office.

"Elena, there's someone here asking for you."

"Who?"

"Vanessa Carter."

My stomach tightened.

Maya immediately stood.

"I'll ask her to leave."

I looked through the office window.

Vanessa stood near the reception desk.

She looked different.

Her hair was pulled into a messy bun.

There were dark circles beneath her eyes.

She wore jeans and a plain sweater instead of designer clothes.

For a moment, I barely recognized her.

"Tell her she needs to contact my attorney," I said.

Maya nodded.

But before she could reach the front desk, Vanessa raised her voice.

"Elena, please!"

Several clients turned.

"I just need five minutes."

I stepped into the salon.

"Vanessa, you shouldn't be here."

Her eyes filled.

"Richard fired me."

I said nothing.

"He says I ruined the family business."

"That's between you and him."

She moved closer.

"Julian lied to me."

My heart pounded.

"About what?"

"Everything."

I held my ground.

"Then tell your attorney."

She began crying.

"He told me you were going to sell the salons anyway. He said you had already agreed."

I studied her face.

Maybe she was telling the truth.

Maybe she was trying to protect herself.

Either way, I wasn't going to discuss evidence in front of my employees.

"Vanessa, leave."

She looked desperate.

"Please. He has something that could hurt you."

My stomach tightened.

"What?"

She glanced toward the windows.

Then lowered her voice.

"There's another document."

I felt the blood drain from my face.

"What document?"

"A paper he kept hidden from everyone."

I stared at her.

"Tell Rebecca."

Vanessa shook her head.

"He says it proves he owns part of your company."

For several seconds, I couldn't move.

Then Maya stepped beside me.

"Vanessa, you need to go."

Vanessa wiped her cheeks.

Before leaving, she whispered something that stayed with me.

"Elena, I thought I was the woman he wanted."

Her voice cracked.

"But I think he only wanted what belonged to you."

I watched her walk away.

May you like

Then I called Rebecca.

And told her everything.
