Surprise

Chapter 2 - The Secret Loan

I didn't sleep that night.

Every time I closed my eyes, I heard the sound of those scissors.

The sharp scrape.

The tearing of my hair.

Vanessa's laughter.

But Rebecca's final words disturbed me even more.

Your husband may have tried to destroy your company.

At six in the morning, my phone vibrated.

A message from Rebecca.

"Come to my office at eight. Bring your company records."

I showered, dressed in a charcoal business suit, and carefully covered my damaged hair with a silk scarf.

Before leaving, I walked past the living room.

Julian was asleep on the sofa.

Vanessa was gone.

The wineglass remained on the coffee table beside the scissors.

I stared at them.

Then I took photographs.

I placed the scissors in a paper bag without touching the handles.

I had already saved photographs of my hair on the floor.

Now I wanted everything documented.

Julian woke as I approached the front door.

"Where are you going?"

"Work."

He looked at my scarf and smirked.

"Good idea. You should keep that thing covered."

I turned around.

"Did you enjoy yourself last night?"

He stretched.

"You're being dramatic. It's hair, Elena. It'll grow back."

My fingers tightened around my handbag.

He continued.

"Maybe now you'll learn not to disrespect me in my own house."

I looked at the walls.

The furniture.

The staircase.

Everything I had helped pay for.

Then I smiled.

"Enjoy the next few days, Julian."

His expression shifted.

"What does that mean?"

I opened the door.

"You'll understand soon."

Rebecca's office was on the fourteenth floor of a downtown building.

She met me in the reception area.

The moment she saw my scarf, her face changed.

"What happened?"

I removed it.

Her hand flew to her mouth.

"Oh, Elena."

I explained everything.

She didn't interrupt.

When I finished, she pushed a box of tissues toward me.

"You need to know something," she said carefully. "What he did wasn't just cruel. Cutting your hair without permission can constitute assault."

I stared at her.

"He laughed afterward."

"That doesn't make it less serious."

She asked whether I wanted to report it.

I hesitated.

Part of me still felt embarrassed.

As though I had somehow allowed it to happen.

Rebecca leaned forward.

"Elena, you have nothing to be ashamed of."

I nodded.

"I want it documented."

"Good."

Then she opened a thick folder.

"Now we need to discuss your business."

My heart began pounding.

She placed a document in front of me.

It was a loan agreement.

The borrower was a company called Sterling Growth Partners LLC.

The amount was $680,000.

The date was six months earlier.

I didn't recognize the company.

"What's this?"

"An investment company connected to Julian."

I frowned.

"Julian doesn't own a business."

"He does now."

Rebecca turned the page.

My breath caught.

There was my name.

Elena Martinez.

Below it appeared a signature resembling mine.

I stared.

"That's not my signature."

"I know."

Beside it was the name Crown & Grace Holdings.

My company.

The document claimed my business assets had been pledged as collateral.

I felt sick.

"How is that possible?"

"Someone submitted documents representing that you had authorized the guarantee."

"Someone forged my name?"

"That's what the evidence suggests."

I looked at Rebecca.

"Who?"

She hesitated.

"Julian appears to be involved. Vanessa is listed as a manager of Sterling Growth Partners."

The room seemed to tilt.

Vanessa.

Of course.

I had assumed she wanted my husband.

But perhaps she wanted something much bigger.

Rebecca continued.

"The lender is requesting additional documents because of inconsistencies in the guarantee."

"What lender?"

"Red Oak Commercial Finance."

I recognized the name.

A regional financing company.

"Have they taken anything?"

"Not yet. The guarantee is disputed, and we have placed them on notice."

I pressed my hand against my chest.

"Why would Julian do this?"

Rebecca looked uncomfortable.

"We found evidence of substantial debts."

She handed me another page.

There were unpaid personal loans, credit card balances, and transfers to accounts I had never seen.

The total exceeded $400,000.

"Julian told me we were financially comfortable."

"He may have been using borrowed money to maintain that appearance."

I remembered the expensive watches.

The luxury vacations.

The dinners he insisted were business expenses.

My husband had built his image on debt.

And he had tried to use my company to protect it.

"What about my employees?" I whispered.

"We're taking steps to protect them and the business."

Tears filled my eyes.

Twelve employees.

Twelve people with families, rent, bills, and dreams.

He had put all of them at risk.

Rebecca slid another document across the desk.

"There's something else."

It was an email exchange.

Julian's name appeared at the top.

Below it was a message to Vanessa.

"When the financing clears, we can move the funds and stop pretending."

My stomach turned.

Vanessa had replied.

"And what about Elena?"

Julian's response made my blood run cold.

"She'll sign whatever I put in front of her. She doesn't understand real business."

I read it twice.

Then a third time.

Every cruel joke about my career suddenly made sense.

He hadn't simply underestimated me.

He had counted on that humiliation keeping me obedient.

"How did you get these messages?"

"Through a lawful review of records provided by a cooperating party. We'll authenticate everything before using it."

I nodded slowly.

"What happens now?"

"We need to protect your accounts, challenge the false guarantee, and preserve evidence. Then we'll address the marriage."

I looked at the folder.

"Can we stop him?"

"We have a strong basis to act."

"How long?"

Rebecca glanced at her calendar.

"Five days is enough to start a very public change in his circumstances. The legal process will take longer."

I remembered my promise.

Five days.

Rebecca noticed my expression.

"Elena, don't confront him with this."

"I won't."

"Don't threaten him."

"I understand."

"And don't go back there alone if you feel unsafe."

I looked down.

For the first time, I admitted the truth.

"I don't feel safe with him anymore."

Rebecca reached across the desk.

"Then you don't have to stay."

We contacted the police to report the haircut.

An officer took my statement and photographs.

Rebecca helped arrange a temporary place for me to stay.

Then I called my general manager, Maya Thompson.

"Maya, I need you to come to Rebecca's office."

"Is everything okay?"

I looked at the forged signature.

"No."

She arrived twenty minutes later.

When she saw my hair, her eyes filled with tears.

"Elena, who did that?"

"My husband."

Her face hardened.

"What do you need?"

I slid the documents toward her.

She read them in silence.

Then she looked at me.

"Tell me how we fight this."

For the first time that morning, I smiled.

"Together."

That afternoon, our accountant began reviewing financial access and company records.

We found no authorized business loan and no approved guarantee.

But we discovered several recent attempts to obtain confidential information about Crown & Grace.

The requests had come from an email address belonging to Sterling Growth Partners.

Vanessa's company.

Then Maya received a phone call from our bank.

Someone had tried to schedule a meeting about transferring ownership interests in Crown & Grace.

The caller had claimed to be my husband.

Maya put her phone on speaker.

The bank representative asked whether I had authorized it.

I looked at Rebecca.

Then I answered.

"Absolutely not."

A heavy silence followed.

The representative cleared her throat.

"Mrs. Martinez, then I believe we need to discuss a document submitted this morning."

I felt my stomach drop.

"What document?"

"A notarized authorization."

"Signed by whom?"

She hesitated.

"By you."

I closed my eyes.

May you like

Julian wasn't finished.

He was only getting started.
