Surprise

Chapter 5 - The Meeting That Destroyed His Smile

Friday morning began with three phone calls.

The first came from Maya.

All three Crown & Grace salons were operating normally.

The second came from our accountant.

Our financial accounts remained secure, and the attempted unauthorized transactions had been blocked.

The third came from Rebecca.

"Elena, the court has granted temporary emergency relief against the attempted use of those disputed authorizations."

I closed my eyes.

"Does that mean they can't sell my company?"

"They cannot lawfully proceed using the challenged documents under the current order. The case itself continues."

I covered my mouth.

Relief rushed through me so suddenly that my knees weakened.

For five days, I had carried a fear I could barely explain.

Now, at least for the moment, my company was protected.

Rebecca continued.

"Counsel for the financing company has also confirmed that its investigation uncovered serious irregularities. The materials are being preserved for the appropriate authorities."

"And Julian?"

"He hasn't been informed of every development yet. Formal service is being arranged."

I looked at the clock.

9:14 a.m.

The proposed closing meeting was scheduled for eleven.

"What's our next move?"

Rebecca's voice was steady.

"We attend the meeting with the necessary parties, provide the court order, and establish that no legitimate sale has been approved."

I dressed carefully.

A cream blazer.

Black trousers.

Simple gold earrings.

My new short hairstyle framed my face.

I applied lipstick and studied my reflection.

Five days earlier, Julian had called me a maid.

Today, I looked like the owner of a successful company.

Because that was exactly what I was.

At ten forty-five, Rebecca and I entered a downtown conference center.

The meeting was being held in a private suite rented by Carter Meridian Investments.

Our accountant accompanied us.

The lender's legal representative was already present.

So was a representative from the proposed buyer.

Julian stood near the windows with Vanessa.

He was laughing.

She wore a fitted red dress and held a leather portfolio against her chest.

When Julian saw me, his smile froze.

"What are you doing here?"

I walked toward the table.

"Attending a meeting about my company."

Vanessa glanced at Rebecca.

Then she looked at me.

"You weren't invited."

I smiled.

"Interesting. Neither were you when you first approached Crown & Grace."

Her expression changed.

Julian stepped forward.

"Elena, this isn't the place."

"Then where would you prefer?"

He lowered his voice.

"Go home."

I looked around.

Several people were watching.

"No."

Richard Carter, a broad-shouldered man in his fifties, approached us.

"Mrs. Martinez?"

"Yes."

He extended his hand.

"I'm Richard Carter."

I shook it.

"I know who you are."

His smile tightened.

"Then perhaps we should sit."

Everyone took their places.

Julian remained standing.

"Before we begin," he announced, "I'd like to clarify that my wife isn't familiar with corporate transactions."

I looked at Rebecca.

She opened her briefcase.

Richard cleared his throat.

"Mr. Whitmore, please sit down."

Julian obeyed.

Rebecca placed a certified copy of the temporary court order on the table.

"I represent Elena Martinez, the sole owner of Crown & Grace Holdings."

Vanessa leaned forward.

"That's not what our documents say."

Rebecca turned toward her.

"Then your documents are in serious dispute."

The room fell silent.

She continued.

"My client has not authorized any sale of Crown & Grace Holdings. She has not guaranteed the Sterling Growth Partners loan. She has not granted Julian Whitmore authority to act on her behalf."

Julian laughed nervously.

"That's absurd."

Rebecca slid a copy of the challenged authorization across the table.

"Mrs. Martinez denies signing this."

Richard frowned.

"Julian?"

My husband glanced at the paper.

"She must have forgotten."

I stared at him.

Forgotten.

As though I could accidentally forget agreeing to sell the business I had built for twenty-six years.

Rebecca spoke calmly.

"The named notary has also denied witnessing the purported signature."

Vanessa went pale.

Richard turned toward her.

"What?"

Vanessa shook her head.

"There must be some administrative mistake."

Rebecca continued.

"The bank rejected an unauthorized ownership-transfer request. The lender has suspended action on the purported guarantee. The court has issued emergency relief."

Julian stood abruptly.

"This is ridiculous!"

Rebecca didn't raise her voice.

"Please sit down, Mr. Whitmore."

He ignored her.

"Elena is doing this because she's jealous of Vanessa!"

I looked at my husband.

For eight years, he had used anger to end every conversation.

Today, nobody was frightened by it.

Richard held up a hand.

"Julian, sit down."

My husband slowly lowered himself into his chair.

The lender's representative opened a folder.

"Our institution has identified inconsistencies in the submitted financial information," he said. "We are cooperating with the relevant investigation."

Vanessa's hands began shaking.

Richard stared at her.

"What have you done?"

"Nothing," she whispered.

Rebecca turned another page.

"There is also a substantial consulting payment proposed for Sterling Growth Partners."

Richard looked toward Julian.

"Three hundred and twenty thousand dollars?"

Julian's face reddened.

"That's compensation for strategic work."

I finally spoke.

"What strategic work, Julian?"

He glared at me.

"You wouldn't understand."

I leaned forward.

"Try me."

Silence.

I continued.

"Did you calculate the valuation yourself? Did you review our operating margins? Did you consider our exclusive brand agreements?"

He said nothing.

"Did you know we had three locations?"

He blinked.

"What?"

I smiled sadly.

"Three, Julian. Not one."

Richard looked up sharply.

I continued.

"Twelve employees. Three profitable locations. A professional management team. And earnings that exceeded your salary by more than three times."

Julian stared at me.

His mouth fell open.

Vanessa whispered, "That's impossible."

I turned toward her.

"You had our marketing proposal. You knew how much the business could be worth."

Richard's expression darkened.

"Vanessa?"

She began gathering her papers.

"I need some air."

"Sit down," Richard said.

Rebecca placed another document on the table.

"Our client has already commenced proceedings concerning these attempted transactions. Additional evidence is under review."

Julian stood again.

"Elena, stop this!"

I looked at him.

"Five days."

His face changed.

"What?"

"I told you five days."

He stared.

And suddenly, I saw him remembering.

The scissors.

The living room.

My hair on the floor.

My promise.

Rebecca turned toward the others.

"This meeting cannot proceed as a closing. My client has not consented to any transaction."

Richard closed his folder.

"Then this meeting is over."

Julian looked around desperately.

"Wait. You can't just cancel everything."

Richard rose.

"I will not participate in a transaction involving disputed signatures and unauthorized documents."

Vanessa began crying.

Julian turned toward me.

"You did this."

I met his eyes.

"No, Julian."

My voice was almost a whisper.

"You did."

He reached toward my arm.

I stepped back.

"Don't touch me."

The room went silent again.

This time, he stopped.

Outside the conference room, my father was waiting.

When he saw me, he opened his arms.

I walked straight into them.

"Is it over?" he asked.

I shook my head.

"Not yet."

Because just as Rebecca joined us, her phone rang.

She listened for several seconds.

Then her expression changed.

"What is it?" I asked.

She lowered the phone.

"Elena, the investigators found another account."

My stomach tightened.

"Julian's?"

She nodded.

"And they believe money from the fraudulent financing arrangement may already have been diverted."

I looked back toward the conference room.

Julian was standing behind the glass wall.

May you like

Watching me.

For the first time, I saw genuine fear in his eyes.
