Chapter 5

When Detective Brooks mentioned Rachel's life insurance policy, I felt the blood drain from my face.
I looked at Rachel.
She was sitting upright in her hospital bed, staring at him.
"What insurance policy?"
The detective spoke carefully.
"We found documents referencing a policy in your name."
Rachel shook her head.
"That doesn't make sense."
I leaned forward.
"Do you have life insurance?"
She nodded slowly.
"Yes."
My stomach tightened.
"Who is the beneficiary?"
She swallowed.
"Maya."
I stared at her.
Rachel continued.
"I bought the policy when Maya was born."
Her eyes filled with tears.
"I wanted her protected if something happened to me."
I nodded.
That made sense.
Rachel had been raising Maya alone.
She wanted her daughter to have financial security.
But why would Vanessa have information about the policy?
The detective asked the same question.
Rachel shook her head.
"I don't know."
He nodded.
Then explained that investigators were examining whether someone had attempted to use the policy information in connection with temporary guardianship arrangements.
No money had been paid.
No unauthorized benefit had been established.
But the documents raised serious questions.
I looked toward the window.
For years, Vanessa had seemed obsessed with having the perfect family.
She wanted the best schools.
The best vacations.
The nicest clothes.
She often compared Lily to other children.
Sometimes she complained that I spent too much time working.
I thought she wanted more attention.
I never imagined she'd try to control the existence of another child.
And now financial documents were involved.
I felt sick.
After the detective left, Rachel looked at me.
"Marcus?"
I turned.
"Yeah?"
"Do you think Vanessa wanted my money?"
I hesitated.
"I don't know."
Rachel began crying.
I took her hand.
"But investigators will find out what happened."
She nodded.
Then whispered, "I just want Maya back."
My heart tightened.
"I know."
Over the following days, Maya remained under medical care while child welfare professionals worked to ensure her safety.
Rachel was recovering.
Doctors expected her condition to improve with treatment.
But she needed time.
I visited Maya every day I was allowed.
At first, she barely spoke.
She watched every adult carefully.
She asked permission before eating.
Apologized when she spilled water.
And startled whenever someone entered unexpectedly.
It broke my heart.
One afternoon, I brought her a small stuffed rabbit.
It was white with a pink ribbon.
I placed it on the chair beside her bed.
"Hey, Maya."
She looked up.
"Hi."
I smiled.
"I brought you something."
Her eyes widened.
"For me?"
I nodded.
She hesitated.
"Do I have to give it back?"
My heart broke.
I crouched beside her.
"No."
She stared at the rabbit.
"Really?"
I nodded.
"It's yours."
She slowly reached for it.
Then held it against her chest.
For a moment, she smiled.
A tiny smile.
But real.
I felt tears burning my eyes.
Then she whispered, "Thank you."
I smiled.
"You're welcome."
We sat quietly.
Then she looked at my neck.
"The moon."
I touched the tattoo.
"Yeah."
She smiled slightly.
"Mom said you got it because of Grandma."
My heart tightened.
I nodded.
"That's right."
She looked curious.
"What was her name?"
"Eleanor."
Maya smiled.
"That's pretty."
I laughed softly.
"She thought so too."
For a while, I told Maya stories about my grandmother.
How she grew roses.
How she made the best cornbread.
How she called me her little moon.
Maya listened carefully.
Then asked something that made my heart stop.
"Did Grandma Eleanor know about me?"
I swallowed.
She had died before Maya was born.
I shook my head.
"No, sweetheart."
Maya looked down.
I took a breath.
"But I think she would've loved you."
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Really?"
I nodded.
"Very much."
She hugged the rabbit tighter.
Then whispered, "I wish I met her."
My chest tightened.
"Me too."
We sat quietly.
Then Maya looked at me.
"Marcus?"
"Yeah?"
"Do you think you're my daddy?"
For a moment, I couldn't breathe.
I looked into her eyes.
They were dark brown.
Like mine.
Her smile reminded me of Rachel.
But her serious expression looked strangely familiar.
I swallowed.
"I think it's possible."
She nodded slowly.
Then whispered, "Would you be sad if you were?"
My heart shattered.
I immediately shook my head.
"No."
Her eyes widened.
"Really?"
I took her hand gently.
"If I'm your father, I'm going to be very grateful I found you."
Tears rolled down her cheeks.
She leaned forward.
Then hugged me.
I held her carefully.
For a long time, neither of us spoke.
Then she whispered, "I hoped you'd be nice."
I closed my eyes.
"I hope I can be the person you deserve."
That evening, I spoke with my attorney about establishing legal parentage.
I wanted to do everything properly.
Maya had already endured too much confusion.
Rachel agreed to the process.
We also arranged counseling for Maya and Lily.
I wanted both girls to understand that none of this was their fault.
Lily struggled in her own way.
She had been secretly feeding Maya.
She believed she was protecting someone.
But she had also been frightened by what her mother told her.
One evening, I sat beside Lily on her bed.
She held a stuffed bear.
"Daddy?"
I smiled.
"Yeah, baby?"
"Is Mommy mad at me?"
My heart tightened.
I took her hand.
"I don't know how Mommy is feeling."
She looked down.
"But you didn't do anything wrong by telling me someone needed help."
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Mommy said I should keep secrets."
I swallowed.
"Some surprises are okay."
She looked up.
"Like birthday presents?"
I smiled.
"Exactly."
Then I became serious.
"But secrets that make someone unsafe should always be told to a trusted adult."
She nodded slowly.
"Okay."
I kissed her forehead.
Then she whispered, "Can Maya come live with us?"
My heart tightened.
I smiled gently.
"We're working with the people helping her."
Lily looked disappointed.
I hugged her.
"We'll take things one step at a time."
She nodded.
Then smiled.
"I like Maya."
I kissed her forehead.
"Me too."
The next morning, Olivia called.
"Marcus, we have the preliminary parentage results."
My heart stopped.
"What?"
She took a breath.
"The laboratory has completed the testing."
I gripped the phone.
"And?"
There was a pause.
Then Olivia spoke softly.
"Marcus, the results establish that you are Maya's biological father."
For a moment, the world disappeared.
I sat down.
Tears immediately filled my eyes.
My daughter.
My little girl.
Eight years old.
Hidden behind my kitchen cabinet.
Hungry.
Frightened.
And wondering whether I would be happy to know her.
I covered my mouth.
Then began crying.
Olivia waited quietly.
Finally, I whispered, "Thank you."
She answered gently.
"We'll discuss the legal next steps."
I nodded.
But I could barely hear her.
All I could think about was Maya.
Eight years.
Eight birthdays.
Eight Christmas mornings.
Eight years of bedtime stories I never told her.
I had lost so much time.
But now I had a chance to be there for the rest.
I stood.
Then looked toward the family photographs on the wall.
Lily smiling.
Vanessa laughing.
Me standing beside them.
For years, I believed that picture showed my entire family.
May you like
Now I knew someone was missing.
And I was determined to make sure Maya never felt invisible again.
