Surprise

Chapter 4

The first time I saw Rachel Carter again, she was lying in a hospital bed with tears running down her face.

Eight years had passed.

Eight years of missed birthdays.

Missed holidays.

Missed chances.

And somewhere during those years, a little girl had grown up believing her father was a man with a crescent-moon tattoo.

I stood in the doorway.

Rachel looked thinner than I remembered.

Her dark curls were pulled back.

Her face was tired.

But her eyes were the same.

When she saw me, she stopped breathing.

"Marcus?"

My throat tightened.

"Rachel."

For a moment, neither moved.

Then she began crying.

"Oh, my God."

I stepped closer.

She reached for my hand.

I took it.

And suddenly, eight years of confusion seemed to collapse between us.

"Where's Maya?"

Her voice was desperate.

I squeezed her hand.

"She's safe."

Rachel began sobbing.

"Are you sure?"

I nodded.

"She's in the hospital being cared for."

She covered her mouth.

"Thank God."

I sat beside her.

For several minutes, she cried.

Then she looked at me.

"Marcus, I tried to find you."

My chest tightened.

"I know."

She shook her head.

"No. You don't understand."

I leaned forward.

"Then tell me."

Rachel took a shaky breath.

"When I found out I was pregnant, I called you."

My stomach twisted.

"I never received a call."

She stared at me.

"I left messages."

I closed my eyes.

"I never heard them."

Her eyes filled with tears.

She continued.

"I went to your apartment."

My heart tightened.

"When?"

"About two months after we broke up."

I stared.

I had moved during that time.

My construction company had transferred me to another project.

I rented a different apartment.

And changed my phone number after a series of work-related problems.

Rachel continued.

"The building manager said you'd moved."

I nodded.

"I had."

She began crying.

"I sent letters."

My throat tightened.

"Where?"

"To your old address."

I closed my eyes.

I had never received them.

Rachel wiped her cheeks.

"Then I contacted someone who said she knew you."

My stomach tightened.

"Who?"

She looked down.

"Vanessa."

I froze.

For a moment, I couldn't speak.

"Vanessa?"

Rachel nodded.

"She said she was helping manage your office."

My heart pounded.

Eight years earlier, Vanessa had worked briefly as an administrative contractor for a construction firm I partnered with.

I remembered meeting her through a business event.

But we didn't begin dating until later.

I had never imagined she knew Rachel.

I looked at her.

"What did Vanessa tell you?"

Rachel began crying harder.

"She said you knew about the pregnancy."

My chest tightened.

"And?"

Rachel covered her mouth.

"She said you didn't want the baby."

I felt something break inside me.

"No."

Rachel stared at me.

"Marcus..."

I shook my head.

"No, Rachel."

Tears streamed down my face.

"I didn't know."

She began sobbing.

I held her hand.

"I swear I didn't know."

For a long time, we simply cried.

Then Rachel whispered, "I wanted Maya to know you."

My voice broke.

"I would've wanted to know her."

She nodded through her tears.

"I thought you rejected us."

I closed my eyes.

The pain was almost unbearable.

Eight years.

Eight years of my daughter growing up without me.

Eight years of Rachel believing I didn't care.

And someone had been standing between us.

I took a breath.

"Rachel, what happened recently?"

Her expression changed.

She looked frightened.

"I got sick."

I nodded.

"I know."

She continued.

"I was admitted to the hospital."

Her voice trembled.

"Maya stayed with my cousin for a few days."

I leaned forward.

"Then?"

Rachel swallowed.

"Vanessa contacted me."

My stomach tightened.

"How?"

"She said she'd heard I was ill."

I stared.

She continued.

"She told me she'd married you."

I nodded.

"She had."

Rachel began crying.

"She said you wanted to help Maya."

My heart tightened.

I couldn't believe the cruelty.

Vanessa had spent years telling Rachel I wanted nothing to do with my daughter.

Then suddenly appeared claiming I wanted to help.

I looked at Rachel.

"Did you believe her?"

She nodded weakly.

"I wanted to."

My chest broke.

She continued.

"She showed me photographs of Lily."

I froze.

"What?"

Rachel nodded.

"She said Maya could finally meet her little sister."

I closed my eyes.

For a moment, I felt physically sick.

Vanessa had used Lily.

Our five-year-old daughter.

To gain Rachel's trust.

Rachel continued.

"She offered to take Maya to your house."

I swallowed.

"Did you agree?"

She nodded.

"Yes."

Tears filled her eyes.

"I signed a temporary caregiving form."

My stomach tightened.

"Did you know Vanessa planned to hide her?"

Rachel's expression changed to horror.

"Hide her?"

I closed my eyes.

"No."

She grabbed my hand.

"Marcus, what happened?"

I took a breath.

Then explained.

The kitchen cabinet.

The damaged panel.

Lily pushing bread through the hole.

Maya hiding inside.

Vanessa screaming not to touch her.

Rachel began sobbing so hard that a nurse entered to check on her.

I stopped speaking.

The nurse helped her breathe slowly.

When Rachel calmed down, she looked at me.

"My baby."

Her voice broke.

"She must've been so scared."

I held her hand.

"She's safe now."

Rachel covered her face.

"I trusted Vanessa."

I shook my head.

"She lied to both of us."

For several minutes, we sat quietly.

Then Rachel whispered, "Marcus, why would she do this?"

I looked away.

I didn't know.

Jealousy?

Fear?

A desperate attempt to prevent me from discovering another daughter?

None of those explanations justified hiding a child.

But I needed to understand what happened.

That afternoon, Detective Brooks returned.

He interviewed Rachel with appropriate medical and legal support.

She provided the caregiving paperwork.

Phone records.

And messages from Vanessa.

One message caught my attention.

Vanessa wrote:

I'll introduce Maya to Marcus when the timing is right.

Rachel had replied:

Please don't wait. She has wanted to meet him for years.

My chest tightened.

Then another message appeared.

Vanessa wrote:

I know what's best for my family.

I stared at the screen.

That sentence explained more than Vanessa realized.

She had decided the truth was hers to control.

My family.

Rachel's family.

Maya's future.

All reduced to what Vanessa thought she deserved.

I looked toward the detective.

"Did she ever intend to let me meet Maya?"

He answered carefully.

"We're still investigating her intentions and actions."

I nodded.

Then he continued.

"There's another matter."

My stomach tightened.

"What?"

"Investigators found financial records among Vanessa's belongings."

I frowned.

"Financial records?"

He nodded.

"Some concern Rachel."

I looked toward her.

She seemed confused.

"What records?"

The detective took a breath.

"Documents relating to a life insurance policy and potential guardianship arrangements."

My blood ran cold.

I stared at him.

"Whose life insurance?"

He looked toward Rachel.

Then back at me.

"Rachel's."

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Rachel whispered, "I never told Vanessa about my insurance."

I felt cold.

Something was terribly wrong.

Vanessa hadn't only been hiding a little girl from her father.

May you like

She had also been collecting information about the child's sick mother.

And I suddenly realized the truth might be even darker than I feared.
