Surprise

Chapter 4

I didn't rush downstairs.

That was exactly what Evelyn would expect.

Instead, I asked Mr. Bennett to pull up the lobby security feed.

The monitor showed a woman standing beside the reception desk.

Silver earrings.

Dark blue dress.

A black leather briefcase.

Evelyn Price.

Alive.

I gripped the edge of the desk.

For eighteen months after Richard's death, I had wondered whether I had failed him.

Whether I had missed some warning.

Whether I had trusted the wrong people.

Now one of those people was standing downstairs.

"Mom," Daniel whispered, "that's really her?"

"Yes."

Vanessa sat perfectly still.

I looked at her.

"How long have you known she was alive?"

She shook her head.

"I didn't know about the funeral."

"Stop lying."

Her eyes filled with angry tears.

"I didn't ask for any of this!"

Daniel turned sharply.

"Then what did you ask for?"

She opened her mouth.

Closed it.

I took out my phone.

"Charles should be here soon."

At that moment, another call appeared on my screen.

UNKNOWN NUMBER.

I answered.

A woman's voice spoke.

"Hello, Margaret."

Evelyn.

My fingers tightened around the phone.

"I see reports of your death were exaggerated."

She laughed softly.

"Always had a sense of humor."

"What do you want?"

"To speak privately."

"You can speak to my attorney."

"That would be unfortunate."

I glanced at the security monitor.

Evelyn was looking directly toward a lobby camera.

"Richard trusted me," she said.

"Richard fired you."

A pause.

Then her voice hardened.

"Richard made mistakes."

"One of them was trusting you."

She ignored that.

"There are documents in the hotel vault that belong to me."

"No."

"You don't even know what they contain."

"Then you shouldn't be worried."

She breathed slowly.

"Margaret, you need to understand something. Your husband's company is not what you think it is."

The call ended.

I lowered my phone.

Mr. Bennett watched me carefully.

"Would you like hotel security to escort her out?"

"No. But I want her kept away from the vault."

He nodded.

I turned toward Daniel.

"Tell me everything you remember about the papers you signed."

He swallowed.

"Vanessa said the company needed temporary approval from me because Dad had named me a successor."

"Did she show you the will?"

"No."

"Did you ask Charles?"

"No."

I couldn't hide my disappointment.

"Richard spent his life teaching you to check every contract."

Daniel lowered his head.

"I know."

Vanessa suddenly spoke.

"He made it impossible!"

We stared at her.

She stood.

"Richard treated Daniel like a child. He gave Margaret everything and left his own son waiting for permission."

My chest tightened.

"Richard established a trust for Daniel."

"A trust Margaret controls!"

"Because Daniel asked us to protect the assets while he built his career."

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

"That's what you tell yourself."

Daniel looked at her.

"I did ask them."

She turned on him.

"Don't defend her!"

He stood.

"Stop speaking for me."

The silence that followed was almost frightening.

Vanessa looked as though she'd been slapped.

I studied her face.

For the first time, I saw something beneath her arrogance.

Panic.

Not embarrassment.

Not wounded pride.

Real fear.

Someone had promised her something.

And that promise was falling apart.

An hour later, Charles Monroe arrived.

He entered the office carrying a leather document case.

He hugged me tightly.

"Margaret, thank God."

Then he looked at Daniel.

His face hardened.

"Son, I hope you understand how serious this is."

Daniel nodded.

Charles ignored Vanessa.

Instead, he opened his case and removed a sealed envelope.

Richard's handwriting covered the front.

FOR MARGARET — ONLY IF THE BOARD CHALLENGES HER AUTHORITY.

My throat closed.

I touched the handwriting.

Richard had always formed his capital letters with sharp, careful strokes.

I remembered watching him write grocery lists at our kitchen table.

Seeing his writing again nearly broke me.

"Why didn't you give me this?" I whispered.

"Richard instructed me to hold it unless there was evidence of a challenge."

I looked at Charles.

"Did he suspect Evelyn?"

"Yes."

The answer struck like a blow.

Charles opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter.

And a small USB drive.

I unfolded the paper.

My darling Margaret,

If you're reading this, someone has tried to take what we built.

I wish I could be beside you.

But I need you to remember something.

You were never simply my wife.

You were my partner.

Every good decision I made began with you.

Don't let anyone convince you otherwise.

I pressed the letter against my chest.

Tears filled my eyes.

Charles waited.

Then he spoke gently.

"There's more."

He connected the USB drive to his laptop.

A video appeared.

Richard sat behind his office desk.

He looked thinner than I remembered.

Tired.

But his eyes were clear.

"Margaret," he began, "there's something I should have told you sooner."

I covered my mouth.

His voice filled the room.

"Evelyn has been moving money through accounts I never authorized. I believe she's working with someone inside the family."

I looked at Vanessa.

She stared at the floor.

Richard continued.

"I've documented what I found. The evidence is protected with Charles."

He paused.

Then said something that made Daniel look up sharply.

"Daniel, if you're watching this, I hope you haven't allowed someone else to decide who you are."

My son started crying.

Richard looked directly into the camera.

"Margaret, please forgive me for keeping this from you. I wanted to protect you while you recovered."

Then the screen went black.

I couldn't move.

Charles rested a hand on my shoulder.

"Richard discovered nearly two million dollars missing."

I stared at him.

"Two million?"

He nodded.

"But there's something else."

He opened another file.

It showed a series of transactions.

One company appeared repeatedly.

V&H Property Consultants.

I looked at Vanessa.

Her face drained of color.

Charles followed my gaze.

"Vanessa," he asked quietly, "isn't V&H the company you registered before marrying Daniel?"

She backed toward the door.

Daniel whispered, "Vanessa?"

She reached for the handle.

And Charles delivered the words that changed everything.

"We've traced some of the payments. The first transfer was made eleven days before Richard died."

Vanessa stopped moving.

I looked at my late husband's image on the dark laptop screen.

Then I turned toward my stepdaughter.

"What," I whispered, "did you do to my husband?"
