Surprise

Chapter 3

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.

I stared at Evelyn's photograph.

Her familiar smile.

Her pearl earrings.

The small scar beside her eyebrow.

I had attended her funeral.

I had stood beside her daughter.

I had watched a closed casket disappear behind the curtains of the chapel.

And now her name appeared on a newly issued executive access card.

"That woman is dead," I whispered.

The manager looked startled.

"Mrs. Bennett?"

"Evelyn Price died six months ago."

Daniel stepped closer.

"Mom, are you sure?"

I turned toward him.

"I attended her funeral."

Vanessa made a strange sound.

Something between a cough and a nervous laugh.

"People reuse photographs all the time."

I stared at her.

"Why would a hotel issue an ownership credential using a dead woman's photograph?"

She had no answer.

The manager examined his tablet again.

"The credential was approved by an administrator attached to the corporate ownership account."

"Which administrator?"

He checked.

"Someone named Harold Whitmore."

There it was again.

That name.

I suddenly understood this was much bigger than a hotel reservation.

"Mr. Bennett," I said, "please take us somewhere private."

He led us into an office behind the reception area.

A young employee named Tasha brought water.

I thanked her.

Vanessa refused hers.

Daniel sat beside his wife, but he didn't touch her.

The manager closed the office door.

"Mrs. Bennett, I should explain something."

I nodded.

"Our hotel systems were updated last month. The corporate ownership account is separate from guest reservations. I can verify access records, but I cannot validate a company ownership transfer."

"Then why did you receive instructions saying I canceled my floor?"

"Because the request came through that administrator account."

I looked at the desk.

Someone had deliberately connected my personal reservation to a fraudulent corporate account.

That required planning.

And access.

I opened my handbag and took out my phone.

"Who are you calling?" Vanessa demanded.

"My attorney."

Her expression changed.

"You don't need to drag lawyers into a family disagreement."

I almost laughed.

"You're right. A family disagreement is deciding where to eat dinner."

I held up the phone.

"This is something else."

I called Charles Monroe.

He had been Richard's closest friend and our family attorney for twenty-six years.

He answered immediately.

"Margaret? Aren't you supposed to be enjoying the beach?"

"Charles, I need you."

His tone changed.

"What happened?"

I explained the documents.

The forged signature.

The hotel access card.

Evelyn's photograph.

For a long moment, Charles said nothing.

Then he asked a question I didn't expect.

"Margaret, is Daniel with you?"

"Yes."

"Is Vanessa there?"

I looked across the room.

"Yes."

Charles exhaled slowly.

"Do not sign anything. Do not leave the hotel with either of them. I'm coming."

"Charles, what do you know?"

Another silence.

Then he said, "Richard left something for you. Something I hoped we'd never need."

The line went quiet.

He had ended the call.

I stared at my phone.

Vanessa rose from her chair.

"This is insane. Daniel, we're going."

Daniel didn't stand.

"Sit down, Vanessa."

She blinked.

"What?"

"I said sit down."

For the first time that day, my son sounded like himself.

Vanessa's expression hardened.

"You don't get to order me around."

"Then tell me the truth."

"I have!"

"No. You haven't."

She grabbed her purse.

"I refuse to be interrogated."

I watched her reach the door.

Then I spoke.

"Did you know Evelyn?"

Her hand froze on the handle.

"Who?"

"Evelyn Price."

"No."

I waited.

She turned around.

"Why would I know your husband's old assistant?"

"Because I never told you what position she held."

The office became silent.

Vanessa stared at me.

She had made her first mistake.

Daniel stood.

"Vanessa?"

She looked between us.

Then she whispered, "Fine."

My heart hammered.

"Fine what?"

"I met Evelyn."

Daniel took a step back.

"You told me you never met her."

"It wasn't a big deal!"

"When?" I asked.

Vanessa pressed her lips together.

"A few months ago."

"Before or after her funeral?"

She hesitated.

"After."

I felt ice settle in my stomach.

"After her funeral?"

"Yes."

Daniel stared at her.

"Vanessa, what are you saying?"

She rubbed her forehead.

"She contacted me. She said Margaret was being cheated by the company."

I shook my head.

"And you believed a dead woman?"

"I didn't know she was supposed to be dead!"

I looked toward the manager.

"Did you hear that?"

He nodded.

Every word had landed exactly where I needed it.

Vanessa realized her mistake.

She lowered her voice.

"I mean, I thought the funeral was some kind of misunderstanding."

I stood.

"People don't casually misunderstand their own funerals."

Daniel sat down again.

His face looked gray.

I suddenly felt sorry for him.

Not because he was innocent.

He had failed me.

But because I could see the beginning of his world collapsing.

"Daniel," I asked, "did you ever meet Evelyn?"

He shook his head.

"Not that I know of."

"Did Vanessa ask you to sign anything?"

He hesitated.

My chest tightened.

"Daniel."

He looked at his hands.

"She asked me to witness a document."

I closed my eyes.

"When?"

"Last Thursday."

"What document?"

"Something about family asset management."

"And did you witness me signing it?"

His silence answered before he did.

"No."

I took a breath.

"Then what exactly did you witness?"

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

She was shaking her head desperately.

"Don't," she whispered.

But he continued.

"Vanessa told me you'd already signed it. She said you were embarrassed to discuss money."

My eyes burned.

"And you signed anyway."

He nodded.

"I'm sorry, Mom."

Before I could answer, the manager's office phone rang.

He picked it up.

Listened.

Then his expression darkened.

"Are you certain?"

He looked through the glass toward the lobby.

"Keep the security cameras recording. Do not confront anyone."

He hung up.

"Mrs. Bennett, there's a woman downstairs asking for your executive suite."

I already knew.

"Who?"

He swallowed.

"She gave her name as Evelyn Price."

May you like

Then he added something that made my blood turn cold.

"And she says she's here to collect the original documents your husband left behind."
