Chapter 7

The room spun.
I grabbed the doorframe before my knees gave out.
Olivia stared at Daniel as if he had become a stranger in front of her.
“She’s Sarah’s?” she whispered.
Daniel shook his head.
“Mom doesn’t know what she’s saying.”
The officer still held the phone.
Margaret had gone silent.
Helen’s face had turned to stone.
“Margaret,” she said, “this is Judge Whitmore. You are on speaker with law enforcement present.”
The line clicked dead.
Daniel dropped the box.
Papers spilled across my office floor.
Hospital forms.
Trust documents.
Insurance records.
A private custody agreement with my forged signature.
Olivia crouched and picked up one page.
Her hands shook.
“This says I voluntarily surrendered parental rights to Emma.”
I grabbed another.
This one said I had agreed Ava would be placed “temporarily” with Olivia Brooks due to medical distress.
My signature was wrong.
Olivia’s was wrong.
Daniel’s was real.
So was Margaret’s.
The officers arrested Daniel for breaking and entering, forgery, and evidence tampering.
He fought when they cuffed him.
Not hard.
Just enough to make Emma scream from the hallway.
I ran to her.
She had followed us home with Helen’s husband.
Ava stood beside her, frozen.
Emma looked at Daniel in cuffs.
“Daddy?”
Daniel stopped struggling.
For one second, shame touched his face.
Then Margaret’s poison returned.
He looked at Emma and said, “This is Mommy’s fault.”
Ava shouted, “No!”
Everyone froze.
Her little face was red with anger.
“You lied!”
Olivia burst into tears.
I pulled both girls behind me.
“Take him out.”
They did.
DNA results came back two days later.
Ava was biologically mine.
Emma was biologically Olivia’s.
I read the words again and again until they stopped making sense.
Then Emma climbed into my lap.
“Mommy, are you sad?”
I looked at the child I had raised from her first breath.
The child whose fever I had cooled.
The child whose nightmares I had chased away.
The child who still smelled like strawberry shampoo and home.
I held her face.
“I am sad because grown-ups lied.”
Her chin trembled.
“Am I still yours?”
My heart shattered.
“Yes,” I said. “Always.”
Ava stood near Olivia, gripping her stuffed rabbit.
Olivia knelt in front of her.
“And you are mine too. No matter what.”
Helen wiped her eyes.
“We will not let biology become another weapon.”
But Margaret tried.
Her lawyers filed emergency motions claiming “confusion in the maternal households.”
Daniel’s lawyers claimed he had acted under stress.
Patricia Hale disappeared.
The nurse.
The one who signed everything.

Then Mrs. Carter knocked on my door with a flash drive.
“I found something from five years ago,” she said. “Your mother-in-law left it in my mailbox and told me never to watch it unless one of the girls got hurt.”
