Surprise

Chapter 1

The first warning was a pair of red heels by the front door.

They were beside Daniel’s sneakers.

Not mine.

I had just driven straight from the Nashville airport, still wearing my travel coat, still smiling because I thought I was about to surprise my husband and daughter.

Instead, my hand froze on my suitcase handle.

“Emma?” I called.

The house answered with silence.

Then I heard a scraping sound from the kitchen.

I walked in and found my five-year-old daughter on her knees, dragging a wet rag across the floor.

Orange juice spread under the table.

Her cheeks were soaked with tears.

“Mommy!”

She dropped the rag and ran into me so hard I nearly stumbled.

I held her tight.

“Baby, why are you cleaning this by yourself?”

Emma looked toward the stairs.

Then she whispered, “Daddy said I had to stay downstairs.”

My chest tightened.

“Why?”

Her little fingers dug into my coat.

“Because Daddy is with a lady in your bedroom.”

For a second, every sound in the house disappeared.

Then laughter floated down from upstairs.

A woman’s laugh.

Light.

Careless.

Inside my bedroom.

I looked at the red heels again.

Then I grabbed the wooden broom handle leaning beside the pantry.

Emma followed me to the stairs.

I turned.

“Stay here, baby.”

“But Mommy—”

“Stay here.”

My voice shook.

Not from fear.

From rage.

I climbed the stairs quietly at first.

Then faster.

The bedroom door was locked.

“Daniel.”

Everything inside went silent.

I heard a whisper.

A rustle.

Then Daniel’s voice.

“Sarah, wait.”

I kicked the door open.

Daniel jumped away from our bed, shirt half-buttoned.

A woman I had never seen before screamed and pulled the blanket to her chest.

For one heartbeat, nobody moved.

Then I swung the broom handle into Daniel’s shoulder.

He shouted and staggered backward.

“You brought her into my bedroom while our daughter was downstairs crying?”

The woman rushed toward me.

I shoved her back with one hand.

She hit the dresser and gasped.

Daniel grabbed the broom.

“You’re acting insane!”

I yanked it free.

“Who is she?”

The woman looked at Daniel.

Her face was pale now.

“Tell her.”

Daniel’s mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

She stepped between us, shaking.

“You told me she was your ex-wife.”

My fingers loosened around the broom.

“What?”

Daniel whispered, “Olivia, don’t.”

Olivia.

She looked at me like I had ruined her life.

“He said you two divorced three years ago,” she said. “He said you only stayed in this house because of custody.”

I could barely breathe.

Then Emma appeared in the doorway behind me.

“Mommy?”

Olivia turned.

The moment she saw my daughter, her expression shattered.

She lifted a trembling hand to her mouth.

“No.”

I stepped in front of Emma.

Olivia fumbled for her phone.

Daniel lunged.

“Don’t.”

I swung the broom handle toward him again.

“Back up.”

Olivia opened a photo and held the screen toward me.

A little girl smiled from the picture.

Brown hair.

Blue eyes.

Same dimple.

Same small chin.

She looked almost exactly like Emma.

Daniel stood frozen.

Olivia whispered, “That’s our daughter.”

I stared at the screen.

“What is her name?”

“Ava,” Olivia said.

May you like

Her voice broke.

“And she’s five too.”
