Surprise

Chapter 3

The police arrived seven minutes later.

Daniel turned calm the second he saw uniforms.

That was one of his talents.

He became reasonable on command.

“My wife is emotional,” he told the officers. “She came home early from a trip and misunderstood a private family matter.”

I handed them Mrs. Carter’s video.

“Watch this.”

Daniel’s calm cracked.

“Sarah.”

The older officer watched the clip twice.

Then he looked at Emma.

“Sweetheart, did your daddy say that to you?”

Emma nodded without lifting her face from my side.

Daniel exhaled hard.

“I was frustrated. I didn’t mean it.”

Olivia stood near the fireplace, pale and quiet.

The officer asked her, “Ma’am, do you live here?”

“No.”

“Did you believe Mr. Miller was divorced?”

“Yes.”

Daniel snapped, “Olivia.”

She turned on him.

“You lied to me.”

“You knew it was complicated.”

“You said she was your ex-wife.”

“She practically was.”

I stared at him.

I had cooked his meals.

Packed Emma’s lunches.

Paid half his business debts.

Stayed faithful while he built a whole other life.

Practically.

That word almost made me laugh.

The officers told Daniel to leave for the night.

He argued.

Then they told him they had enough to document intimidation of a child.

He grabbed his coat and keys.

Before he walked out, he leaned close to me.

“This will cost you.”

I whispered, “It already did.”

After he left, Olivia sat at my kitchen table with shaking hands.

Emma fell asleep on the couch holding my scarf.

I made coffee neither of us drank.

Olivia looked at me.

“I didn’t know.”

“I believe you.”

She cried then.

Quietly.

“I met him six years ago at a conference in Memphis. He said his marriage ended badly. He said you used Emma to punish him.”

I looked at her.

“Emma is five.”

She covered her mouth.

“I know.”

“When was Ava born?”

“June 14.”

My heart stopped.

Emma was born June 16.

Two days apart.

Olivia saw my face.

“What?”

I opened Emma’s baby album on my phone.

The hospital bracelet.

The nursery photo.

Daniel holding her, crying.

Olivia stared at the screen.

Then she opened Ava’s baby photo.

Same hospital.

Same week.

Same maternity floor.

Daniel in the background of one picture, half-hidden near the nursery glass.

I zoomed in.

He was not looking at Emma.

He was looking at another bassinet.

Olivia whispered, “He was there when Ava was born.”

“He told me he had an emergency at work.”

My stomach turned.

Then I noticed something in Olivia’s photo.

A woman standing beside Daniel.

Older.

Silver hair.

Pearl earrings.

My mother-in-law.

Margaret.

Olivia’s voice dropped.

“Who is that?”

I swallowed.

“Daniel’s mother.”

May you like

Olivia shook her head.

“No. Daniel told me his mother was dead.”
