Surprise

Chapter 6: The Boy Who Wasn't Supposed to Exist

The name on the screen made my entire body go cold.

Elijah Carter.

My son’s name.

My hands went numb.

For a few seconds, I convinced myself it was a mistake.

A coincidence.

Someone using the same name.

Because the alternative was impossible.

My five-year-old son was upstairs.

The phone was downstairs.

And the message had come from him.

“What is this?”” I whispered.

Nobody answered.

Thomas stared at the screen like he had seen a ghost.

Michael looked like he already knew exactly what it meant.

Rachel covered her mouth.

I turned toward her.

“Rachel.””

She looked at me.

“Tell me.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I don’t know.””

I laughed quietly.

Not because anything was funny.

Because those words had become meaningless.

Every time someone said “I don’t know,” it meant they knew something.

Something they weren’t telling me.

I picked up the phone.

The message was simple.

Three words.

*I found him.*

That was it.

No explanation.

No name.

No location.

Just those three words.

I looked at Michael.

“Who sent this?””

He didn’t answer.

“Who?””

His face tightened.

Then he whispered:

“My daughter.””

The room went silent.

I stared at him.

“Your daughter?””

Michael nodded.

“She’s the other baby.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

The other baby.

The child everyone had hidden.

The child who was supposed to explain everything.

The child who had been missing for six years.

“You have a daughter?””

Michael looked down.

“I did.””

My chest tightened.

“What does that mean?””

He looked at the phone.

“It means someone found her.””

Rachel stepped back.

“No.””

I turned toward her.

“You know about this too?””

She shook her head quickly.

“Not her.””

“Then what?””

Rachel looked terrified.

“She wasn’t supposed to survive.””

Those words made the room freeze.

I stared at her.

“What?””

She looked at Michael.

Then at Thomas.

Then finally at me.

“When your father told me about the second baby…”

She swallowed.

“He told me there were complications.””

“What kind?””

Rachel’s voice became smaller.

“He said the baby didn’t make it.””

Michael’s face changed.

Anger.

Pure anger.

“That’s what he told you?””

Rachel looked at him.

“Yes.””

Michael stepped forward.

“He lied.””

The room became silent again.

I looked at Thomas.

My uncle.

The man who had carried my father’s secrets.

“Did you know?””

Thomas didn’t respond.

That was enough.

I stepped closer.

“Did you know my father lied to my wife?””

Thomas looked exhausted.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

I pointed at him.

“You don’t get to say my name like you’re protecting me.””

His face hardened.

“I was protecting your family.””

“You destroyed it.””

The words landed heavily.

Thomas looked away.

For the first time, I saw something different.

Not confidence.

Not control.

Regret.

“I made mistakes.””

I shook my head.

“Mistakes are forgetting a birthday.””

My voice lowered.

“Keeping a mother away from her child is not a mistake.””

Thomas closed his eyes.

“You don’t understand what your father was dealing with.””

“Then explain.””

He looked at the hidden room downstairs.

At the wall that had started everything.

“Your father believed Olivia’s family was dangerous.””

Michael immediately stepped forward.

“My family?””

Thomas looked at him.

“You don’t know what happened before the hospital.””

Michael laughed bitterly.

“Funny.””

“What?””

“You keep talking about things you never witnessed.””

Thomas said nothing.

Michael continued.

“You judged Olivia based on what he told you.””

The tension between them grew.

I looked at Michael.

“What happened before the hospital?””

He hesitated.

Then sat down.

Like the story was too heavy to stand through.

“Olivia had been fighting for years.””

I listened.

“She grew up with a family that controlled everything she did. Every decision. Every relationship. Every mistake.””

His hands tightened.

“She spent most of her life believing nobody would believe her.””

My eyes moved toward the hidden room.

“And then?””

“When she met me, she finally felt safe.””

Michael looked upstairs.

“At least she thought she did.””

I felt a chill.

“What happened?””

“After she became pregnant, everything changed.””

His voice became quieter.

“She started receiving messages.””

“From who?””

He looked at Thomas.

“Your father.””

Thomas’s expression changed.

I felt my stomach drop.

“My father contacted her?””

Michael nodded.

“He wanted control.””

Thomas immediately shook his head.

“That’s not true.””

Michael looked at him.

“You were there.””

Silence.

“You saw him threaten her.””

Thomas looked away.

And that was the first time I saw him lose.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Like a memory had finally caught up with him.

I looked at him.

“Is it true?””

He didn’t answer.

“Thomas.””

His voice was barely audible.

“Yes.””

The room went quiet.

I felt sick.

My father.

The man I spent years trying to understand.

The man I defended after his death.

Had been hiding things from me.

“What did he want?””

Thomas sighed.

“He believed the child belonged to our family.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Thomas looked at Elijah’s picture on the wall.

“He believed blood mattered more than anything.””

I felt anger rising.

“He thought he had ownership?””

Thomas didn’t deny it.

That answer was enough.

Michael looked at me.

“Your father didn’t see children.””

He paused.

“He saw an inheritance.””

My hands clenched.

“And Olivia?””

“He saw her as a problem.””

I looked downstairs.

At the hidden room.

The place where she had spent six years.

“Why did you help him?””

Thomas looked broken.

“Because I believed him.””

The honesty hurt.

“I thought he was protecting you.””

I stared at him.

“And when did you realize he wasn’t?””

Thomas looked down.

“Too late.””

A sound interrupted us.

A small voice.

“Daddy?””

Everyone froze.

Elijah stood halfway down the stairs.

His stuffed dinosaur was pressed against his chest.

I immediately walked toward him.

“Buddy, what are you doing up?””

He looked at the adults.

“Who is that man?””

I followed his eyes.

He was looking at Michael.

Michael looked like he was seeing a miracle.

“Elijah…”

My son stepped back slightly.

“Why does he know my name?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Michael whispered:

“Because I’ve been looking for you.””

Elijah looked confused.

“Why?””

Michael’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because I thought I lost you.””

My son looked at me.

Then at him.

Then asked the question that destroyed all of us.

“Are you my daddy too?””

The silence was unbearable.

I felt something break inside me.

Because I had spent five years teaching Elijah that I would always be there.

That I would always protect him.

But now, standing in my own house, I didn’t know where I belonged in his story.

I knelt beside him.

“Buddy…”

But I couldn’t finish.

Because I didn’t know what to say.

Michael took a step back.

“I’m sorry.””

Elijah looked at him.

“Why are you sad?””

Michael wiped his face.

“Because I missed a lot.””

The little boy looked down.

Then whispered:

“I don’t like when grown-ups cry.””

That simple sentence broke the tension.

Because he was still just a child.

A child surrounded by secrets created by adults.

I carried him back upstairs.

When I returned, the phone was ringing again.

Thomas answered.

His face changed within seconds.

“What?””

A pause.

Then:

“Where?””

Everyone looked at him.

Thomas slowly lowered the phone.

“What happened?””

He looked directly at me.

“The girl who sent the message…”

Michael stood.

“What about her?””

Thomas’s face was pale.

“She found the records.””

My heart started racing.

“What records?””

Thomas looked at me.

“The original birth documents.””

Rachel whispered:

“No.””

Thomas nodded.

“And she’s bringing them here.””

Michael looked terrified.

“Why?””

Thomas stared at the front door.

“Because she knows who changed them.””

A knock echoed through the house.

One single knock.

Everyone froze.

Then another.

And another.

The person outside wasn’t leaving.

I walked toward the door.

But before I touched the handle, Rachel grabbed my arm.

“Daniel.””

I turned.

Her face was full of fear.

“Whoever is outside…”

She swallowed.

“Don’t let them see Elijah.””

The door handle moved.

Someone on the other side was trying to open it.

And then a young woman’s voice came through the door.

“Daniel Carter?””

I froze.

Because I had never heard that voice before.

But she knew my name.

“I know you’re inside.””

A pause.

May you like

Then she whispered:

“And I know you raised my brother.”” ```
