Surprise

Chapter 2: The Secret My Wife Buried

I stared at Rachel as if I had never seen her before.

The woman standing in front of me had the same face I kissed every morning.

The same voice that whispered “I love you” before we went to sleep.

The same hands that held Elijah when he was sick.

But in that moment, she felt like a stranger.

Because my wife had known.

She had known there was a hidden room behind our living room wall.

She had known there was a woman trapped inside our house.

And she had looked me in the eyes every day while carrying that secret.

“Elijah,” Rachel said softly.

My son looked up at her.

“Yes, Mommy?””

Her face changed.

For a second, I saw something I had never seen before.

Fear.

Not anger.

Not confusion.

Fear.

“Go upstairs and get your dinosaur book,” she said.

Elijah looked between us.

“Why?””

“Just go, sweetheart.””

He didn’t move.

Kids notice things adults think they don’t.

He could feel the tension.

He could hear the silence between our words.

“Daddy?””

I forced myself to smile.

“Go upstairs, buddy. Mommy and I need to talk.””

His small face tightened.

“Are you mad?””

That question hurt more than anything else.

Because my son wasn’t worried about the woman in the hidden room.

He was worried his parents were fighting.

“No,” I said quickly.

I walked over and touched his shoulder.

“Everything is okay.””

It was the biggest lie I had ever told him.

Because nothing was okay.

Nothing about that room was okay.

Nothing about my wife’s expression was okay.

Elijah finally walked upstairs, but he kept looking back at us until he disappeared around the corner.

The second he was gone, I turned toward Rachel.

“Open your mouth.””

She blinked.

“What?””

“You heard me.””

My voice was shaking.

“Tell me what is happening.””

Rachel looked down.

That made my anger grow.

I had expected an explanation.

A denial.

Anything.

But she looked guilty.

And guilt was an answer by itself.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

I pointed toward the hidden room.

“No more secrets.””

The woman inside moved slightly.

A small sound escaped her.

Rachel looked toward her.

That tiny movement told me everything.

She knew her.

Not just knew of her.

Knew her.

“How long?”” I asked.

Rachel swallowed.

“Daniel…”

“How long has she been here?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Please listen to me.””

“How long?””

She closed her eyes.

Then whispered:

“Six years.””

The room went silent.

Six years.

I felt like the air had been ripped out of my chest.

Six years ago.

That was the same year Elijah was born.

The same year our lives changed forever.

I looked at the woman on the floor.

Then at Rachel.

“What does she have to do with our son?””

Rachel didn’t answer.

That silence destroyed me.

“What does she have to do with Elijah?””

Finally, the woman spoke.

Her voice was weak.

But clear.

“He doesn’t know, does he?””

Rachel immediately stepped forward.

“Don’t.””

The woman flinched.

And I noticed.

Rachel wasn’t just scared.

She was controlling the situation.

The realization made my stomach turn.

“Who are you?”” I asked the woman.

She looked at me.

“My name is Olivia.””

Her eyes moved toward Elijah’s bedroom upstairs.

“And I’ve been trying to get back to him for six years.””

My heart stopped.

“Back to who?””

She looked at me.

“To my son.””

I felt the floor disappear beneath me.

“No.””

The word came out automatically.

I laughed once.

Not because it was funny.

Because my brain couldn’t accept what I was hearing.

“No.””

Olivia’s eyes filled with tears.

“He has my eyes.””

I looked at her.

Then upstairs.

Then back at Rachel.

“What is she talking about?””

Rachel stepped closer.

“Daniel, you need to understand—”

“Understand what?””

My voice rose.

“That my wife has been keeping a woman locked in a room under our house?””

Rachel started crying.

“It’s not what you think.””

I almost couldn’t believe she said that.

“Not what I think?””

I pointed behind me.

“There is a woman with her wrists tied together in our wall.””

My voice cracked.

“What exactly am I supposed to think?””

Rachel looked broken.

But I couldn’t tell if she was broken because she regretted what she had done…

Or because she had finally been caught.

I walked back into the hidden room.

Olivia immediately looked afraid.

Not of me.

Of what would happen next.

“Who tied you up?””

She looked at Rachel.

That answer was enough.

My chest tightened.

I turned slowly.

“Rachel.””

My wife covered her face.

“Daniel, please.””

“No.””

I stepped away from her.

“You don’t get to say please.””

I looked toward the stairs.

“Elijah is upstairs sleeping in the same house where you kept someone trapped?””

Rachel shook her head.

“I never wanted this.””

“Then why did you do it?””

No answer.

“Why?””

She wiped her tears.

“Because I was terrified.””

“Of what?””

She looked at Olivia.

“Of losing everything.””

I stared at her.

“What does that mean?””

Rachel took a deep breath.

Then she said something that changed the way I saw the entire last six years.

“Olivia was pregnant before you met me.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“She had a baby.””

I looked at Olivia.

She looked down.

Rachel continued.

“After the baby was born, there were complications.””

My head spun.

“What baby?””

Rachel’s voice became quieter.

“Your son.””

I froze.

The words didn’t make sense.

I looked toward the stairs.

“Elijah?””

Rachel nodded.

My entire body went numb.

“No.””

I shook my head.

“No, Elijah is my son.””

“He is.””

Her answer confused me.

“What?””

“He is your son.””

I stared at her.

“Then what are you saying?””

Rachel looked at Olivia.

“She gave birth to him.””

The room became completely silent.

A thousand memories rushed through my mind.

The hospital.

The first time I held Elijah.

The first time he wrapped his tiny fingers around mine.

Rachel crying beside me.

The doctors.

The paperwork.

Everything.

Except something felt wrong.

Something I had ignored.

Something I had never questioned.

Because I trusted my wife.

“Rachel…”

My voice lowered.

“What happened six years ago?””

She didn’t answer immediately.

And that terrified me more than anything.

Because I knew whatever came next would change everything.

Finally, she spoke.

“Olivia was my sister.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

“She was my older sister.””

Olivia closed her eyes.

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“I trusted her.””

Rachel looked away.

“After our parents died, Olivia and I only had each other.””

I looked between them.

“Then why is she locked in a room?””

Rachel’s face tightened.

“Because she was going to take Elijah away.””

Olivia suddenly spoke.

“I was trying to save him.””

Rachel turned sharply.

“Don’t lie.””

“I’m not lying.””

“You abandoned him.””

Olivia shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice became stronger.

“I was sick. I was manipulated. You took him before I could even hold him.””

My heart pounded.

I looked at Rachel.

“What is she talking about?””

Rachel looked terrified.

“Daniel, you need to understand what happened.””

“Then tell me.””

She took a step closer.

“When Elijah was born, Olivia wasn’t stable.””

“What does that mean?””

“She was dealing with depression.””

I looked at Olivia.

The woman on the floor looked exhausted.

Broken.

But not dangerous.

“Rachel…”

“She wasn’t thinking clearly,” my wife said quickly.

“She tried to run away with him.””

Olivia shook her head.

“That’s not what happened.””

Rachel ignored her.

“She was going to put him in danger.””

I looked at Olivia.

“Did you?””

Olivia stared at me.

“No.””

Her answer came immediately.

“I would never hurt my baby.””

The confidence in her voice made me pause.

Because a liar usually needs time.

She didn’t.

She answered like someone who had been waiting six years for someone to finally ask.

I looked at Rachel.

“What proof did you have?””

Her face changed.

“What?””

“Proof.””

I stepped closer.

“You said she was dangerous.””

I pointed toward the hidden room.

“You locked her away.””

My voice became colder.

“So show me the proof.””

Rachel opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

That was the moment I knew.

Something was missing.

Something important.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I want the truth.””

Rachel looked toward the hallway.

Then whispered:

“There’s something you don’t know about the night Elijah was born.””

A chill moved through me.

“What?””

She hesitated.

Then she said:

“Your son was never supposed to come home with you.””

I felt my heart stop.

“What does that mean?””

Rachel looked at Olivia.

And Olivia whispered:

“Because the baby you buried six years ago…”

She looked directly at me.

“…wasn’t Elijah.””

My blood ran cold.

Before I could respond, a loud sound came from upstairs.

A crash.

Then Elijah screamed.

“Daddy!””

I ran toward the stairs.

But before I reached the first step, Rachel grabbed my arm.

Her fingers tightened around my wrist.

“Daniel.””

I turned.

Her face was filled with terror.

“Don’t go up there.””

I froze.

“Why?””

She looked toward the ceiling.

May you like

Then whispered:

“Because someone else is in this house.”” ```
