Surprise

Chapter 5: The Second Crib

The scream from upstairs cut through the house like a knife.

“Elijah!””

I dropped the photograph on the table and ran.

Everything else disappeared.

The secrets.

The lies.

The accusations.

There was only one thought in my mind.

My son.

I reached the top of the stairs and saw Elijah standing in the hallway.

He wasn’t alone.

A man was kneeling in front of him.

My entire body froze.

Because I knew that face.

Not because I had met him before.

Because I had seen him in the photograph.

The stranger holding the other baby.

Except this wasn’t a photograph anymore.

This was a real person standing in my house.

“Elijah, come here.””

My voice was low.

The man slowly turned toward me.

He looked older than the picture.

Maybe late forties.

His hair was gray at the sides.

His face was tired.

But his eyes…

His eyes looked exactly like Elijah’s.

The same dark eyes.

The same small crease near the corner when he looked confused.

My stomach dropped.

“Who are you?””

The man stood slowly.

Before he could answer, Rachel rushed past me.

“No.””

She stopped when she saw him.

Her face lost all color.

“You can’t be here.””

The man looked at her.

“I could say the same thing.””

I looked between them.

“You know him.””

Rachel didn’t answer.

That was enough.

I stepped closer.

“Who is he?””

The man looked at Elijah.

Then back at me.

“My name is Michael.””

He paused.

“And I’m the reason your family has been lying to you for six years.””

I felt anger rise through me.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

I pointed around the house.

“Everyone knows something except me.””

My voice cracked.

“I’m done being the last person to know.””

Michael looked down.

“You deserve the truth.””

“Then start talking.””

Rachel stepped forward.

“Daniel, don’t.””

I turned toward her.

“No.””

The word came out harder than I expected.

“No more.””

She stopped.

I looked at Michael.

“Tell me.””

Michael took a slow breath.

“Six years ago, Olivia and I had a child.””

My heart tightened.

“Elijah?””

He shook his head.

“No.””

I froze.

“What?””

Michael looked at the hallway.

“At first, we thought there was only one baby.””

The words made no sense.

“Explain.””

He looked at me.

“Olivia was told she had complications during pregnancy. The doctors said the baby’s heartbeat was irregular. They prepared us for problems.””

He swallowed.

“But when she gave birth…”

He stopped.

“Tell me.””

His eyes became wet.

“When she gave birth, there were two babies.””

The hallway went silent.

Two babies.

I looked at Elijah.

Then back at him.

“No.””

Michael nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

I shook my head.

“That’s impossible.””

“It’s not.””

Rachel whispered:

“Daniel…”

I turned toward her.

“You knew.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I knew there were two babies.””

The words felt like a physical blow.

“You knew?””

She looked down.

“I found out later.””

“When?””

She didn’t answer.

“When?””

“Two days after Elijah came home.””

I stared at her.

Two days.

She had known.

Two days after I became a father.

Two days after I held my son and promised I would protect him.

She had known there was another child.

Another mother.

Another story.

And she said nothing.

“What happened to the other baby?””

Nobody answered.

That silence terrified me.

Michael looked toward Rachel.

“She knows.””

My eyes moved back to my wife.

“Rachel.””

Her lips trembled.

“Daniel…”

“Where is the other baby?””

Rachel closed her eyes.

Then whispered:

“I don’t know.””

Michael’s expression hardened.

“You know exactly what happened.””

“No!””

Rachel’s voice broke.

“I know what I was told.””

“What you were told?””

I looked at her.

“What does that mean?””

She wiped her tears.

“My father-in-law told me Olivia couldn’t take care of two children.””

I felt sick.

“My father?””

Rachel nodded.

“He said Olivia was unstable.””

Michael stepped forward.

“He lied.””

Rachel looked at him.

“You don’t know what he showed me.””

“I know what he did.””

Michael’s voice became sharper.

“He used Olivia’s worst moments against her.””

Rachel shook her head.

“He showed me documents.””

“Fake documents.””

“You don’t know that.””

“I do.””

The tension between them was unbearable.

I looked at Thomas, who had followed us upstairs.

He was standing near the staircase.

Silent.

Watching.

And suddenly I realized something.

Everyone in this house was connected.

Everyone had pieces.

Except me.

“Thomas.””

He looked at me.

“Did you know about the second baby?””

His silence was immediate.

My chest tightened.

“You knew.””

Thomas looked away.

“Daniel…”

“You knew.””

“Yes.””

The answer destroyed me.

I stepped back.

“How many years?””

Thomas lowered his head.

“Since the hospital.””

I laughed quietly.

A broken sound.

“Unbelievable.””

I looked around at all of them.

“My father knew.””

I pointed at Thomas.

“You knew.””

I looked at Rachel.

“You knew.””

Then Michael.

“You knew.””

My voice became louder.

“And I was the only person raising this child who had no idea.””

Elijah suddenly spoke.

“Daddy?””

I turned.

He was standing there holding his stuffed dinosaur.

His eyes were full of confusion.

All the anger disappeared.

Because he was still five years old.

Still my little boy.

I walked toward him.

“Hey.””

I knelt down.

“Are you okay?””

He nodded.

“Who are all these people?””

I looked at him.

And I had no answer.

How could I explain something I barely understood myself?

I touched his hair.

“Go back to your room for a little while.””

“Are you mad?””

The question again.

That same innocent question.

I swallowed.

“No.””

I forced a smile.

“Daddy just needs to talk.””

He hugged me.

Then whispered:

“Don’t let them take me away.””

My heart shattered.

I looked up.

Everyone had heard him.

Rachel covered her mouth.

Michael looked devastated.

Because those words came from a child who had no idea how much fear the adults around him had created.

After Elijah went back to his room, the silence returned.

Michael spoke first.

“He was always meant to know the truth.””

I looked at him.

“Then why didn’t he?””

His eyes moved toward Rachel.

“Because someone made sure he wouldn’t.””

Rachel shook her head.

“I was trying to protect him.””

“From what?””

She looked at me.

“From losing you.””

That answer confused me.

“Why would I lose him?””

Her face changed.

Like she had been holding something back for years.

“Because Daniel…”

She paused.

“Because Elijah wasn’t the only child.””

I felt a chill.

“You already said that.””

“No.””

She looked at Michael.

Then at Thomas.

Then back at me.

“You still don’t understand.””

I waited.

Rachel whispered:

“The other baby didn’t disappear.””

The room went completely still.

“What?””

Michael looked down.

Thomas closed his eyes.

Rachel continued:

“The other child was raised.””

My heart began racing.

“Where?””

Nobody answered.

Then a sound came from downstairs.

A phone ringing.

Thomas looked toward the living room.

His face changed.

“What is it?””

He didn’t move.

The phone kept ringing.

Then Michael whispered:

“No.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He looked terrified.

“That number…”

The ringing stopped.

A second later, a message alert sounded.

Everyone froze.

Thomas slowly walked downstairs.

I followed.

The phone was lying on the table.

The screen showed a name.

Not a number.

Not unknown.

A name.

A name that made Michael’s face turn white.

I read it.

And my blood ran cold.

May you like

Because the message was from:

*Elijah Carter.* ```
