Surprise

Chapter 3

The hearing ended with a temporary order preventing Vanessa's company from transferring the disputed funds while the allegations were investigated.

No one declared her guilty.

No one sentenced her.

But the order meant she could no longer move the money as freely as she had before.

For Vanessa, that was enough to make the world collapse.

Outside the courtroom, she cornered Robert beside a row of wooden benches.

“You told me this was a routine hearing!”

“It was supposed to be a routine application,” he replied. “The additional evidence changes things.”

“Then make it disappear!”

Robert stared at her.

“That's not how the law works.”

Vanessa's eyes narrowed.

“You work for me.”

“I represent you. I don't manufacture evidence or make documents disappear.”

She turned away, furious.

I was preparing to leave when Marcus approached.

“Your Honor, may I speak with you privately?”

I studied his face.

“About the case?”

“About your family.”

I followed him into an empty conference room.

Marcus closed the door but remained standing.

“Daniel called me last night,” he said. “He wanted to know whether his mother was involved in an investigation against his wife.”

My heart sank.

“What did you tell him?”

“That I couldn't discuss confidential information. But he sounded terrified.”

I sat down slowly.

Daniel was thirty-nine, a successful architect, and my only child. His father had died when Daniel was nineteen, leaving the two of us to rebuild our lives together.

I had watched my son grow into a kind, hardworking man.

Then he married Vanessa.

At first, I thought she brought him happiness. She was charming, ambitious, and attentive whenever other people were watching.

Privately, however, she controlled nearly every decision in his life.

She criticized his friends, monitored his spending, and convinced him that my concern was interference.

Whenever I tried to discuss it, Daniel defended her.

“She just wants us to build our own family, Mom.”

I wanted to believe him.

Now I wondered how much of his life he had surrendered to keep the peace.

“Has Daniel said anything else?” I asked.

Marcus hesitated.

“He asked me whether a person could be held responsible for financial decisions made by their spouse.”

My stomach tightened.

“Did he say why?”

“No. But I think he knows something.”

Before I could respond, my phone rang.

Daniel's name appeared on the screen.

I answered immediately.

“Daniel?”

“Mom, where are you?”

“At the courthouse.”

“I know. Vanessa told me everything.”

His voice sounded strained.

“She says you're trying to ruin her business because you never accepted her.”

I closed my eyes.

“Your wife is facing serious allegations. Those allegations must be investigated fairly.”

“She's my wife!”

“And Patricia is my sister.”

Silence.

Then he whispered, “I didn't know about the money.”

I sat upright.

“What money?”

Daniel breathed heavily.

“Vanessa told me the company was struggling. She said she borrowed money temporarily from clients who had agreed to invest. She promised to replace everything.”

“Did you see the agreements?”

“Some of them.”

“Were they signed?”

“I thought they were.”

His voice broke.

“Mom, I signed something last month. She said it was a routine authorization for the company.”

My blood ran cold.

“What did you authorize?”

“I don't know. She wouldn't give me a copy.”

I gripped the phone.

“Daniel, you need to speak to an independent attorney immediately. Don't sign anything else. Don't delete messages or destroy documents. Preserve everything.”

“Do you think I'm in trouble?”

“I don't know. That's why you need proper legal advice.”

He fell silent.

Then he asked a question that hurt more than any accusation.

“Mom, if I made a mistake, will you still love me?”

My eyes filled with tears.

“Daniel, I have loved you since the moment I first held you. That doesn't mean I can protect you from every consequence. It means I'll help you face the truth.”

He began to cry.

“I think Vanessa used my name.”

Before I could ask another question, the call ended.

I remained seated, staring at the phone.

Marcus watched me quietly.

“What happened?”

“My son may be involved in something he doesn't understand.”

I stood and gathered my shawl.

For years, I had believed Vanessa's greatest weapon was her cruelty.

I was beginning to understand that it was something far more dangerous.

May you like

She knew how to make good people believe that protecting her was the same as protecting their families.

And Daniel might have signed away more than his peace of mind.
