Surprise

Chapter 1

I cut off my bridesmaid's ponytail in front of two hundred wedding guests.

Then I took off my engagement ring, dropped it beside the black velvet ring box, and told my fiancé to marry her instead.

Everyone thought I had lost my mind.

But they hadn't seen what Vanessa had done to my mother.

And they certainly didn't know what my mother was about to tell me.

My name is Nia Washington.

I was twenty-eight years old, standing beneath a wall of white roses at the most expensive wedding venue in Atlanta.

I wore a custom white lace gown that had taken six months to make.

My dark hair was pinned into an elegant bridal updo.

My makeup was perfect.

My veil flowed behind me.

Everything looked exactly like the wedding I had dreamed about since I was a little girl.

Except my mother was crying.

And my bridesmaid was laughing.

Vanessa stood beside the reception table in her blush-pink dress, tossing her long black ponytail over her shoulder.

She looked beautiful.

Confident.

Almost proud.

My mother, Evelyn Washington, stood several feet away.

Her silver-gray hair had been chopped into uneven pieces.

The elegant shoulder-length style she had spent years growing was gone.

One side was cut close to her ear.

The other hung in crooked strands.

Her gray beaded gown sparkled beneath the afternoon sunlight, but she kept her head lowered.

She looked humiliated.

Defeated.

Smaller than I had ever seen her.

I stared at Vanessa.

"What did you do?"

She laughed.

"Oh, come on, Nia. Don't be dramatic."

My stomach tightened.

"Answer me."

"It was just a prank."

My mother wiped her tears.

"Nia, sweetheart, please don't make a scene."

I looked at her ruined hair.

Then at Vanessa's perfect ponytail.

Something inside me snapped.

I walked behind Vanessa.

She was still smiling when I grabbed her ponytail near the base.

"What are you doing?"

I picked up the large scissors lying beside the ribbon decorations.

Then I cut.

The thick ponytail separated with one sharp movement.

Vanessa screamed.

Her hands flew toward her head.

The garden pavilion erupted.

Guests jumped from their chairs.

Someone dropped a champagne glass.

Vanessa spun toward me.

"YOU CRAZY WOMAN!"

I held the severed ponytail in my hand.

"You thought destroying my mother's hair was funny?"

Her face turned bright red.

"IT WAS ONLY A PRANK!"

I threw the ponytail onto the table.

"A prank?"

My voice trembled.

"Look at her!"

I pointed toward Mom.

"She spent years growing her hair. She wanted to look beautiful at her daughter's wedding!"

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

"Hair grows back."

I stared at her.

Then I looked at my mother.

She was crying harder now.

The woman who had raised me alone after my father died was standing in front of two hundred strangers, ashamed to lift her head.

My mother had worked two jobs for most of my childhood.

She had cleaned offices at night.

She had cooked meals for wealthy families on weekends.

When I was accepted into college, she sold her wedding jewelry to help me pay the first semester's tuition.

She had never asked for anything in return.

All she wanted was to walk beside me on my wedding day.

And Vanessa had turned that moment into a joke.

Then Marcus rushed toward us.

My fiancé.

Thirty-two years old.

Handsome.

Successful.

Wearing a perfectly tailored black tuxedo.

The man I was supposed to marry in less than twenty minutes.

He grabbed my arm.

"Nia, stop! You've gone too far!"

I jerked away.

"Too far?"

He looked at Vanessa.

Then back at me.

"You just assaulted my sister!"

I felt my stomach turn.

"Your sister destroyed my mother's hair!"

"It was a stupid prank!"

I stared at him.

He had said the same words Vanessa used.

A prank.

As though my mother's tears were entertainment.

As though humiliation became harmless when the people responsible called it a joke.

I took a step closer.

"You laughed."

Marcus blinked.

"What?"

"You laughed when they did it to her."

His expression changed.

"I didn't know what was happening."

"Don't lie to me."

I remembered arriving at the bridal suite earlier that morning.

Marcus had been standing outside with Vanessa.

They were looking at a video on her phone.

Both were laughing.

When I asked what was funny, they stopped.

Marcus kissed my forehead and told me not to worry.

Now I understood.

"You knew," I whispered.

He shook his head.

"Nia, listen."

"You knew what they were planning."

Vanessa stepped forward.

"Marcus didn't do anything!"

I looked at her.

"Then why was he laughing?"

Marcus's jaw tightened.

"Because I thought it was harmless."

My heart broke.

Not because he had defended his sister.

Because he had watched my mother suffer and decided her pain didn't matter.

I looked toward Mom.

She was gripping the edge of the table.

Her hands were trembling.

"Mom?"

She lifted her tearful eyes.

"I'm sorry, baby."

Those words destroyed me.

My mother was apologizing for being humiliated.

On my wedding day.

I turned toward Marcus.

He reached for my hand.

"Nia, we can discuss this after the ceremony."

I pulled away.

"No."

His face hardened.

"You're not seriously going to ruin our wedding over hair?"

I stared at him.

Then I slowly removed my diamond engagement ring.

The guests fell silent.

Even Vanessa stopped shouting.

Marcus looked at my hand.

"Nia?"

I walked toward the small round table beside the floral arch.

The black velvet ring box sat open.

I placed the diamond ring beside it.

Then I looked directly into Marcus's eyes.

"Then marry someone who thinks humiliating my mother is funny."

His face went pale.

"Nia, don't do this."

I turned away.

"Mom, we're leaving."

I took my mother's hand.

She looked frightened.

"Sweetheart, you've spent so much money."

"I don't care."

"The guests—"

"I don't care about them either."

Marcus stepped toward us.

"Nia, come back!"

I kept walking.

Vanessa stood behind him, clutching what remained of her ponytail.

For the first time that afternoon, she wasn't smiling.

We reached the edge of the pavilion.

Mom suddenly tightened her grip on my hand.

"Nia."

I turned.

Her face had changed.

She wasn't simply embarrassed anymore.

She looked terrified.

"There's something else."

My stomach tightened.

"What?"

She glanced toward the bridal suite.

Then toward Marcus.

Her voice dropped to a whisper.

"Something happened at the salon."

I stared at her.

"Mom, what are you talking about?"

She swallowed hard.

"They didn't just cut my hair."

I felt cold.

"Who didn't?"

Mom looked toward Vanessa.

Then she whispered something that made my heart stop.

"Your fiancé was there before they started."

I stood motionless.

Behind us, the wedding music continued playing.

Marcus was calling my name.

But suddenly, I couldn't hear him.

All I could hear was my mother's trembling voice.

May you like

"Nia, I think they were trying to stop me from telling you something."

And just like that, I realized the ruined hairstyle might have been the smallest part of what happened that morning.
