Surprise

Chapter 8

The Day Evelyn Finally Told the Truth

Evelyn came to my house three days later.

I hadn't invited her.

I didn't want to see her.

But when I opened the door, she looked completely different from the woman I'd slapped in the bridal suite.

Her sleek hair was pulled back.

She wore a plain gray dress.

No diamonds.

No designer handbag.

No arrogant smile.

She looked exhausted.

"Nia."

I stared.

"What do you want?"

Her eyes filled.

"To apologize."

I almost laughed.

"Now?"

She lowered her head.

"I know."

I folded my arms.

"You forged my signature."

She nodded.

"You threatened my sister's future."

Another nod.

"And you tried to turn my marriage into a financial trap."

Tears rolled down her cheeks.

"Yes."

I stared at her.

For the first time, Evelyn wasn't denying anything.

She wasn't blaming me.

She wasn't making excuses.

She was admitting what she'd done.

But I wasn't ready to forgive her.

"Why?"

She swallowed.

"Richard told me we'd lose everything."

I shook my head.

"So you decided to steal from us?"

She began crying.

"I thought I could fix it."

My voice rose.

"By destroying my father's legacy?"

She covered her face.

"I know."

I stepped backward.

"You don't."

She looked up.

"You don't know what it feels like to lose your father and spend years protecting the only things he left behind."

My voice broke.

"You don't know what it feels like to discover someone you trusted was planning to take them."

Evelyn cried harder.

I took a breath.

"Why are you really here?"

She looked toward the street.

Then whispered, "Because Richard is planning to run."

My stomach tightened.

"What?"

She nodded.

"He transferred money overseas."

I stared.

"How do you know?"

She opened her purse.

Then removed a small drive.

"I copied his financial records."

I didn't move.

She held it toward me.

"There are bank transfers. Emails. Internal reports."

My heart pounded.

"Why bring this to me?"

Evelyn's voice broke.

"Because I finally understand what he's done."

I studied her face.

She looked frightened.

"Tell me."

She swallowed.

"Richard has been stealing from investors for years."

I nodded.

"We know."

She continued.

"But I found something else."

My stomach tightened.

"What?"

"A recording."

I stared.

"Of what?"

Her eyes filled.

"Your father's last meeting with Richard."

I felt cold.

"We already have one."

She shook her head.

"Not this one."

I stared at the drive.

Evelyn continued.

"Your father discovered Richard was paying someone to interfere with the medical investigation."

My heart stopped.

"What medical investigation?"

She looked devastated.

"The one after your father died."

For several seconds, I couldn't breathe.

Then I called Patricia.

She arrived with Detective Grant less than an hour later.

Evelyn gave a formal statement.

She handed over the drive.

And for the first time, she admitted that she'd helped Richard alter the prenuptial agreement.

She also admitted she'd tried to obtain Leah's signature.

I sat silently while she spoke.

Part of me wanted to scream.

Another part felt relief.

At last, someone inside the Williams family was telling the truth.

Detective Grant examined the files.

Then she looked toward Evelyn.

"Are you willing to testify?"

Evelyn nodded.

"Yes."

Grant's expression remained serious.

"You understand that cooperation doesn't erase your own legal responsibility?"

Evelyn lowered her head.

"I understand."

Marcus arrived later that afternoon.

He found his mother sitting in my living room.

His expression changed.

"Mom?"

She stood.

"Marcus."

He looked toward me.

"What happened?"

I nodded toward the drive.

"Your mother gave investigators evidence against your father."

Marcus stared.

"What?"

Evelyn began crying.

"I should have done it years ago."

Marcus stood motionless.

Then whispered, "Why didn't you?"

She looked at him.

"Because I was afraid of losing everything."

His eyes filled.

"And instead you nearly lost me."

Evelyn covered her mouth.

He stepped closer.

"Mom, you lied to me."

She nodded.

"You hurt Nia."

Another nod.

"You threatened Leah's future."

Her shoulders shook.

Marcus swallowed.

"I don't know how to forgive that."

Evelyn began sobbing.

"I don't expect you to."

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Marcus looked at me.

I could see how badly he was hurting.

His family was collapsing.

His father was under investigation.

His mother had confessed to fraud.

And the woman he loved had canceled their wedding.

I wanted to comfort him.

But I knew that healing couldn't begin with pretending everything was fine.

So I simply reached for his hand.

He squeezed it.

And for the first time in weeks, we stood together without pretending we knew what came next.

That evening, Detective Grant called.

Her voice was urgent.

"Nia, we've reviewed the new recording."

My heart pounded.

"And?"

She paused.

"It appears Richard arranged payments to a hospital employee who had access to your father's records."

I felt sick.

"What does that mean?"

"We're investigating whether evidence was deliberately concealed after his death."

I swallowed.

"Was my father murdered?"

Grant's voice softened.

"We're not ready to make that conclusion."

I closed my eyes.

"But you're closer?"

"Yes."

Then she added something unexpected.

"We've also located an independent witness."

My heart pounded.

"Who?"

"A former medical records supervisor."

I sat down.

"What did she say?"

Grant took a breath.

"She claims Richard contacted her the morning your father died."

My stomach twisted.

"And?"

"He asked whether anyone had retained the original laboratory records."

I stared at the wall.

The room seemed to spin.

My father's death.

The forged agreement.

The threats against Leah.

Everything had been designed to protect Richard's secrets.

But now the people he'd manipulated were beginning to turn against him.

May you like

And I knew something had changed.

Richard Williams was finally losing control.
