Surprise

Chapter 2

I had never been afraid to open a file on my own computer.

That Thanksgiving night, I was terrified.

Lily sat beside me on the living room sofa.

Her tiny fingers were wrapped around mine.

Across the room, Vanessa stood near the staircase.

Maya remained beside her, holding the sleeve of her pink party dress.

Nobody spoke.

I had already called my mother, Evelyn, and asked her to come stay with the children.

I also told Vanessa that she needed to keep her distance from Lily.

She argued.

She cried.

She threatened to call her attorney.

I didn't care.

All I wanted was the truth.

My security system was connected to a tablet in my home office.

I carried Lily upstairs and sat her in the comfortable chair beside my desk.

“Sweetheart, you don't have to watch anything that scares you.”

She nodded.

Then she pointed toward the screen.

“Tuesday.”

I looked at her.

“What happened Tuesday?”

She lowered her head.

“That was when I forgot to fold Maya's clothes.”

My stomach tightened.

“Why were you folding Maya's clothes?”

Lily looked confused.

“Because Vanessa told me to.”

I swallowed hard.

Then I opened Tuesday's recording.

The video showed Lily's bedroom.

Her small white bed.

Her stuffed rabbit.

Her drawings taped to the wall.

Everything looked ordinary.

Until Vanessa entered.

She was wearing a green blouse.

She walked directly toward Lily, who sat on the floor folding laundry.

I turned up the volume.

“You missed three shirts,” Vanessa said.

Lily looked up.

“I'm sorry.”

Vanessa grabbed the clothes and threw them onto the floor.

“Do it again.”

“But I have homework.”

The woman on the screen leaned toward my daughter.

“Your homework can wait.”

I felt my fingers tighten around the tablet.

Then Lily stood.

“I need to finish my reading.”

Vanessa grabbed her arm.

Lily cried out.

The grip lasted only a few seconds.

But it was enough.

I could see exactly where Vanessa's fingers pressed against Lily's skin.

The same place I had noticed bruises downstairs.

I stopped the recording.

My chest felt too tight to breathe.

Lily immediately whispered, “I'm sorry.”

I turned toward her.

“Why are you apologizing?”

She stared at her hands.

“Because I made her angry.”

I knelt beside her.

“No, sweetheart.”

My voice broke.

“You didn't make anybody hurt you.”

Her eyes filled.

I opened my arms.

She leaned into me.

For several minutes, I held her.

Then she whispered, “There's more.”

I didn't want there to be more.

But I knew I had to understand what had happened.

I opened another recording.

This one was from Thursday.

Lily was sitting on her bed holding a photograph of Danielle.

Vanessa entered and noticed the picture.

“What did I tell you about that photograph?”

Lily hugged it against her chest.

“It's my mommy.”

Vanessa's expression hardened.

“You have a mother now.”

Lily shook her head.

“You're my stepmom.”

The slap came so quickly that I barely processed it.

Vanessa struck Lily across the cheek.

My daughter fell sideways onto the bed.

I heard myself make a sound I didn't recognize.

Then Vanessa pointed toward the photograph.

“You will not disrespect me in my own house.”

Lily began crying.

“I want Daddy.”

Vanessa leaned closer.

“Your father is busy working. He doesn't have time for your nonsense.”

I paused the video.

My hands were shaking.

I looked at Lily.

She was watching my face.

Waiting.

I realized she was afraid I might become angry with her.

I forced myself to lower my voice.

“Lily, look at me.”

She did.

“You did nothing wrong.”

She began crying.

“I just wanted Mommy's picture.”

I pulled her into my arms.

“You can keep every photograph of your mother. Nobody has the right to take them from you.”

She held me tightly.

Then she said something that nearly broke me.

“Vanessa says Mommy is dead because she didn't want to stay.”

I closed my eyes.

Danielle had fought cancer for almost two years.

She endured surgeries.

Chemotherapy.

Pain I couldn't begin to understand.

Until her final breath, she worried about Lily.

And Vanessa had turned that loss into a weapon against our child.

I held Lily closer.

“Your mommy loved you more than anything.”

She sobbed against my shoulder.

“She didn't leave because she wanted to?”

“No, baby.”

I kissed her hair.

“She wanted to stay with you forever.”

There was a soft knock.

My mother stood in the doorway.

Evelyn Bennett was sixty-seven years old, with short silver hair and the calmest voice I knew.

She looked at Lily.

Then at my face.

“Marcus?”

I couldn't answer.

She came forward.

Lily immediately reached for her.

“Grandma!”

Mom gathered her into her arms.

I explained quietly that Vanessa had hurt Lily and that we had video evidence.

My mother's expression changed.

For a moment, she looked furious.

Then she looked at Lily and softened.

“Come downstairs with me, sweetheart.”

Lily hesitated.

“Daddy?”

I touched her cheek.

“I'm right here.”

She nodded.

Mom carried her out.

I waited until they were gone.

Then I opened the remaining recordings.

There were dozens.

Some showed Vanessa ordering Lily to clean.

Others showed her taking toys away.

In several, she threatened to send Lily to a boarding school if she complained.

But one recording was different.

It had been saved under a date from two weeks earlier.

Vanessa entered Lily's bedroom carrying a folder.

She sat beside the bed and made a phone call.

I heard a man's voice.

“Did Marcus sign the paperwork?”

Vanessa replied, “Not yet. He keeps asking questions.”

The man sighed.

“Then make him believe Lily needs professional treatment.”

My stomach tightened.

Vanessa looked toward the bedroom door.

“She already seems unstable when she cries. I can make it worse.”

I leaned closer to the screen.

“What about the trust?” the man asked.

Vanessa smiled.

“Once Marcus signs, we'll finally control it.”

I froze.

The trust?

What trust?

Then Vanessa said something that made my entire body go cold.

“Danielle left more money than Marcus realizes.”

I stopped the recording.

My late wife's name.

My daughter's suffering.

And some kind of financial plan.

Everything was connected.

I played the final seconds again.

The man on the phone said, “Don't let the grandmother interfere.”

Vanessa laughed.

“Evelyn doesn't know anything.”

I stared at the screen.

My wife had been planning something.

Something involving Lily.

Something involving Danielle's money.

And I had no idea how far it went.

Then my phone vibrated.

A message from Vanessa appeared.

“You need to delete those recordings before you destroy this family.”

I read it twice.

May you like

Then another message arrived.

“You have no idea what Danielle left behind.”
