Surprise

Chapter 2

The Punishment They Planned Yesterday

I stared at the disciplinary form.

The date was yesterday.

The punishment was already written.

MANDATORY HAIR REMOVAL FOR REPEATED APPEARANCE VIOLATIONS.

At the bottom was a signature.

Principal Harold Whitmore.

My stomach tightened.

I looked toward Ms. Carter.

"You planned this?"

Her eyes widened.

"Give me that."

I stepped backward.

"No."

She reached toward the paper.

I moved it away.

"You're not touching anything else."

Maya stood beside Grandma Evelyn.

Lily clung to her hand.

I could see my oldest daughter's face changing.

She wasn't only crying anymore.

She looked frightened.

"Daddy?"

I turned.

"What is it, sweetheart?"

She swallowed.

"Ms. Carter said this would happen."

My heart pounded.

"What?"

Maya wiped her cheeks.

"Yesterday."

I looked at the teacher.

Her expression hardened.

"That's enough."

I ignored her.

"Tell me, baby."

Maya looked down.

"She told me if I didn't remove my braids, she'd do it herself."

I felt sick.

"Did you tell anyone?"

Maya nodded.

"I told the assistant principal."

"Who?"

"Mrs. Daniels."

I knew the name.

She'd helped Maya with her science schedule.

She'd always seemed kind.

"What did she say?"

Maya hesitated.

"She said she'd handle it."

My chest tightened.

"And?"

Maya's voice broke.

"Nothing happened."

I looked toward the office.

"Then we're going to speak with her."

Ms. Carter stepped forward.

"Mr. Williams, you can't simply interrupt school operations."

I stared at her.

"You interrupted my daughter's right to feel safe."

She opened her mouth.

I raised one hand.

"Don't."

Then I turned toward Grandma.

"Mom, can you stay with the girls?"

She nodded.

"Of course."

I crouched beside Lily.

She was crying quietly.

"Hey, Peanut."

She looked up.

"Yes, Daddy?"

I brushed a tear from her cheek.

"Your sister's hair isn't the most important thing about her."

Lily nodded.

"I know."

I smiled sadly.

"And we're going to figure out what we can do about your wig."

Her little lip trembled.

"But Maya worked so hard."

I looked toward my oldest daughter.

She was staring at the floor.

I reached for her hand.

"Baby, look at me."

She raised her eyes.

"You did something beautiful."

Tears filled her eyes.

"And nobody can take that love away."

She began crying again.

I hugged her.

Then I stood.

And walked toward the principal's office.

Ms. Carter followed.

"Mr. Williams, this is unnecessary."

I didn't answer.

The receptionist looked startled when I approached.

"Can I help you?"

"Yes."

My voice was steady.

"I need to see Principal Whitmore immediately."

She hesitated.

"He's in a meeting."

I placed the disciplinary form on her desk.

"Tell him Marcus Williams is here about the punishment he authorized yesterday."

Her expression changed.

She looked at the paper.

Then toward Ms. Carter.

For one brief moment, I saw recognition.

She knew.

The receptionist picked up her phone.

"Mr. Whitmore?"

A pause.

"There's a parent here."

Another pause.

"Mr. Marcus Williams."

I watched her face.

Then she swallowed.

"He says it's about the hair-removal form."

Silence.

Her expression tightened.

"Yes, sir."

She ended the call.

"He's coming."

I nodded.

Ms. Carter stood beside the wall.

Her hands were trembling.

I noticed something else.

She kept glancing toward her phone.

As though waiting for instructions.

A few minutes later, the office door opened.

Principal Harold Whitmore stepped out.

He was a tall Black man in his fifties.

Gray suit.

Perfectly polished shoes.

Expensive watch.

He smiled when he saw me.

"Mr. Williams."

I didn't smile.

"Principal Whitmore."

He extended his hand.

I looked at it.

Then at him.

He slowly lowered it.

"I understand there's been an incident."

I almost laughed.

"An incident?"

He nodded.

"Regarding your daughter's appearance."

I held up the form.

"You signed this yesterday."

His eyes flickered.

"That's a standard disciplinary document."

I pointed toward the punishment.

"Mandatory hair removal?"

He cleared his throat.

"Our school maintains high grooming standards."

I stared.

"For braids?"

He folded his arms.

"Length restrictions apply to all students."

I shook my head.

"Your handbook doesn't authorize staff to cut students' hair."

His expression changed.

"Have you reviewed the handbook?"

"Yes."

I had.

When Maya enrolled.

And again when she started complaining about Ms. Carter's comments.

I knew the rules.

He looked toward the receptionist.

Then back at me.

"Perhaps we should discuss this privately."

I nodded.

"With my daughter present."

He hesitated.

"Mr. Williams—"

"And an independent witness."

His smile disappeared.

I continued.

"I also want the hallway footage preserved."

Ms. Carter stepped forward.

"There's no need for that."

I turned.

"There's every need."

Principal Whitmore raised one hand.

"Let's all remain calm."

I took a breath.

"I'm calm."

I pointed toward the hallway.

"My daughter is the one crying because a teacher cut her hair without permission."

He looked uncomfortable.

Then he said something that made my blood run cold.

"Ms. Carter was acting under administrative guidance."

I froze.

"Administrative guidance?"

He nodded.

"Yes."

I stared at him.

"So you told her to do it?"

He hesitated.

"Not exactly."

I felt anger rising.

"Then explain exactly."

His expression hardened.

"Mr. Williams, I won't be interrogated in my own school."

I stepped closer.

"Then perhaps you'll answer the school district."

His face changed.

For the first time, I saw fear.

Not concern for Maya.

Not regret.

Fear of consequences.

He cleared his throat.

"Let's not escalate unnecessarily."

I looked at him.

"That decision was made when you approved this form."

I picked up my phone.

Then I called the district superintendent's office.

As I waited for someone to answer, the receptionist hurried toward Principal Whitmore.

She whispered something.

His face went pale.

I watched him look toward the hallway.

Then toward me.

And suddenly, I understood.

They weren't simply worried about the video.

They were worried about something else.

Something connected to Maya.

Something they'd been preparing long before today.

Then the receptionist handed him another document.

I caught a glimpse of the heading.

STUDENT ENROLLMENT REVIEW.

MAYA WILLIAMS.

Below it were three words.

RECOMMEND IMMEDIATE EXPULSION.

My stomach dropped.

May you like

Because cutting my daughter's hair wasn't the end of their plan.

It was only the beginning.
