Surprise

Chapter 8: The Secret Inside My Wedding Ring

The message stayed on the screen.

*YOUR HUSBAND WASN’T HIDING EVIDENCE FROM THEM.*

A second passed.

Then another.

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone was thinking the same thing.

If Daniel wasn’t hiding something from the people hunting him…

Then who was he hiding it from?

Me.

My fingers tightened around the brass key.

The same key he had left behind.

The same key he had trusted Breaker to protect.

The same key that had brought me to this moment.

I looked at Victor.

Then at Breaker.

Neither man looked surprised.

That was the part that hurt.

“You knew.””

My voice was quiet.

Breaker looked at me.

“Maya—”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You both knew there was more.””

Breaker didn’t answer.

Victor looked away.

And that silence felt like another betrayal.

“I’m standing here watching strangers tell me pieces of my own life.””

My voice cracked.

“My husband died, and somehow everyone knew more about him than I did.””

“Maya,” Breaker said softly.

“Don’t.””

I stepped back.

“I loved him.””

“I know.””

“No.””

I looked at him.

“You don’t.””

The words surprised even me.

But they were true.

Nobody knew what Daniel and I had.

Nobody knew the quiet mornings.

The stupid jokes.

The way he always warmed my side of the bed before waking me because he knew I hated cold sheets.

Nobody knew the man I lost.

And nobody had the right to decide what truths I could handle.

Breaker lowered his eyes.

For once, he had nothing to say.

Officer Harris cleared his throat.

“We need to focus on the immediate problem.””

I looked at him.

“What problem?””

“The person sending these messages has access to information they shouldn’t have.””

He pointed at the photograph.

“They knew about the key.””

A pause.

“They knew about the video.””

Another pause.

“And now they know we’re here.””

The meaning was obvious.

We weren’t searching for them.

They were watching us.

The police secured the apartment.

Nobody left.

Not because we were safe.

Because we were no longer sure where safe existed.

Ethan and Grace were moved into the hallway with an officer while the adults searched the bedroom.

I hated being separated from them.

But I understood.

The bedroom.

The place in the photograph.

The place where Daniel had hidden something.

I stood in the doorway.

I couldn’t recognize it.

Not because of the fire.

Because of everything I was learning.

Every corner of that room held a memory.

The night Daniel proposed.

The first time Grace crawled into our bed after a nightmare.

The morning Ethan lost his first tooth.

And now someone was telling me there had been secrets inside those walls.

Secrets beneath my own roof.

Breaker walked in beside me.

“Are you okay?””

I almost smiled.

“No.””

He nodded.

“Fair.””

I looked at him.

“You knew about the ring.””

His expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“I knew Daniel trusted it.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“No.””

He looked at the floor.

“It’s not.””

I waited.

Finally, he said:

“Daniel showed me the ring once.””

My chest tightened.

“When?””

“A month before he died.””

“Why?””

“He asked me if I knew how to protect something hidden in plain sight.””

I stared.

“And you didn’t ask what he meant?””

Breaker gave a small, sad smile.

“That was Daniel.””

“What?””

“He only told people what they needed to know.””

I looked away.

“That sounds like an excuse.””

“It is.””

He paused.

“But it was also who he was.””

I hated that he was right.

Daniel had always been private.

Not secretive.

Private.

There was a difference.

But maybe the line between them had disappeared somewhere along the way.

Officer Harris entered the room.

“We found something.””

Everyone turned.

He held a small evidence bag.

Inside was a tiny memory card.

“Where?””

“Behind the baseboard near the closet.””

I stared.

“Daniel hid that?””

“Looks like it.””

Breaker took a step closer.

“Don’t open it here.””

Officer Harris looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because whoever sent those messages wants us to.””

A silence followed.

The officer understood.

“This could be a trap.””

“Yes.””

“But we need to know what’s on it.””

Breaker nodded.

“I know.””

Everyone looked at me.

Because suddenly, somehow, the decision belonged to me.

Not Breaker.

Not Victor.

Not the police.

Me.

I thought about Daniel.

The man who had hidden things.

The man who had died trying to protect us.

Then I looked at the memory card.

“Open it.””

Breaker studied me.

“You’re sure?””

No.

I wasn’t.

I was terrified.

But fear had already taken enough from me.

“Yes.””

They opened the file on a secure police computer.

There was only one video.

The date appeared.

Two days before Daniel died.

My hands shook.

The video loaded.

Daniel appeared again.

But this time, he wasn’t sitting at our kitchen table.

He was in our bedroom.

The same bedroom.

The same place where the camera had been hidden.

He looked exhausted.

Like he hadn’t slept.

“Maya,” he said.

My heart broke hearing his voice again.

“If you’re seeing this, then something happened.””

He looked toward the camera.

“I need you to understand why I made the choices I made.””

I held my breath.

“I didn’t hide things because I thought you were weak.””

A pause.

“I hid things because you are the strongest person I know.””

Tears filled my eyes.

Daniel continued.

“The ring I gave you wasn’t just a ring.””

I froze.

My hand moved instinctively toward my finger.

The ring.

My wedding ring.

The one I had worn every day since he placed it there.

I looked at it differently.

Like it belonged to someone else.

Daniel looked down.

“Inside that ring is something I never wanted you to have to see.””

Everyone in the room went still.

“What?”” I whispered.

The video continued.

“Two years ago, before we got married, I made a promise to you.””

His expression softened.

“I promised I would always protect you.””

A sad smile.

“I didn’t realize that promise would become impossible.””

He looked away.

“The truth is, Maya, someone close to us was involved.””

My heart stopped.

Someone close.

Victor.

Breaker.

Someone else.

Daniel continued.

“I discovered that the person helping Westbridge wasn’t an employee.””

A pause.

“It was someone who had access to my life.””

The room felt colder.

Someone with access.

Someone who knew our home.

Someone who knew our routines.

Someone who knew my children.

Daniel looked directly into the camera.

“If you are watching this, do not trust anyone who tells you they were protecting you.””

My eyes filled.

Because every person who had kept secrets had used those words.

Daniel continued.

“Protection without honesty is just another way of controlling someone.””

I looked at Breaker.

He looked down.

Because he knew.

Daniel wasn’t just talking about other people.

He was talking about everyone.

Including him.

The video continued.

“The information I collected is dangerous because it doesn’t just expose Westbridge.””

Daniel took a deep breath.

“It exposes the person who helped them.””

The video glitched.

Then returned.

“I put the final evidence inside the only thing I knew Maya would never let go of.””

My breathing stopped.

The ring.

Daniel smiled sadly.

“I’m sorry.””

The video froze.

A loading symbol appeared.

Then the screen went black.

Everyone stared.

“That’s it?””

Officer Harris checked the file.

“It was interrupted.””

“By what?””

Nobody answered.

Then the computer screen changed.

A new message appeared.

Not from the unknown number.

From the video itself.

*MAYA, TURN OVER THE RING.*

My blood ran cold.

Because that wasn’t a message from Daniel.

It wasn’t part of the recording.

Someone had entered the system.

Someone was watching.

Breaker immediately disconnected the computer.

Too late.

The screen flashed one more time.

A second message appeared.

*YOU STILL THINK DANIEL DIED BECAUSE HE KNEW TOO MUCH.*

The words disappeared.

A final image appeared.

A photograph.

Recent.

Taken minutes ago.

My family.

Standing outside the police station.

Ethan.

Grace.

Me.

And behind us…

Someone watching.

My stomach dropped.

Because I recognized the person.

Victor recognized him too.

“No.””

His voice was barely audible.

Everyone looked at him.

“What?””

Victor stared at the photograph.

“That’s impossible.””

Breaker stepped closer.

“Who is it?””

Victor’s face went pale.

“The man who was supposed to be dead.””

Nobody moved.

“What are you talking about?””

Victor pointed at the photo.

His finger shook.

“That’s Daniel’s old supervisor.””

Officer Harris frowned.

“Name?””

Victor swallowed.

“Richard Voss.””

The name meant nothing to me.

But it meant everything to Victor.

“Why does that matter?””

Victor looked at me.

“Because Richard Voss was the first person Daniel suspected.””

A pause.

“And he was killed in the same fire that everyone thought started Daniel’s investigation.””

The room went silent.

Officer Harris stared at the photo.

“Are you saying the man in this picture is Richard Voss?””

Victor nodded.

“Yes.””

“But the records show he died two years ago.””

Victor’s eyes stayed on the image.

“That’s why Daniel was scared.””

I looked at the photo.

At the man standing behind my family.

At the person who had somehow returned from the dead.

Then my phone buzzed.

A new message.

One sentence.

From Richard Voss.

*MAYA, YOUR HUSBAND DIDN’T DIE TRYING TO EXPOSE ME.*

A pause.

May you like

Another message appeared.

*HE DIED TRYING TO PROTECT YOU FROM WHAT YOU REALLY ARE.*
