Surprise

Chapter 7: The Truth Victor Tried to Bury

Nobody touched the computer.

Nobody even breathed.

The file sat on the screen like a loaded weapon.

*THE TRUTH ABOUT DANIEL BENNETT.*

Created three minutes ago.

Sent by Victor Hale.

My eyes moved slowly from the screen to the man standing behind me.

Victor looked like he had aged ten years.

The calm businessman was gone.

The friend who brought groceries after my husband died was gone.

The person standing there looked like someone who had spent years running from one terrible moment.

“Victor.””

My voice barely worked.

He didn’t answer.

“Why is your name on that file?””

His eyes closed.

A small movement.

But I saw it.

The exact moment someone stops pretending.

“I didn’t want you to find out this way.””

My heart sank.

“Find out what?””

He looked at the children.

Then at me.

“Maya…”

“No.””

I stepped away.

“I’m done with secrets.””

“I know.””

“Then tell me.””

Victor looked at the screen.

“The file is not what you think.””

A bitter laugh escaped me.

“Of course it isn’t.””

I pointed at the computer.

“Nothing is ever what it looks like anymore.””

Breaker stood beside me.

His voice was quiet.

“Open it.””

Victor immediately said:

“No.””

Everyone turned.

Breaker stared at him.

“Why?””

Victor looked terrified.

“Because once she sees it, there is no going back.””

My stomach twisted.

“Good.””

I looked directly at him.

“There shouldn’t be.””

Officer Harris stepped forward.

“We need to know what’s on it.””

Victor shook his head.

“You don’t understand.””

“No,” I said.

“I don’t.””

I looked at him.

“That’s the entire problem.””

The room went silent.

Finally, Officer Harris nodded toward the computer.

“Play it.””

Victor didn’t move.

Breaker clicked the file.

The screen went black.

For several seconds, nothing happened.

Then a video appeared.

The camera angle was different.

Not Daniel’s kitchen recording.

A security camera.

Black and white.

A timestamp appeared.

Two years earlier.

Three days before Daniel’s death.

I watched the screen.

And then I saw him.

Daniel.

Walking into a parking garage.

He looked nervous.

He kept looking over his shoulder.

My hand covered my mouth.

Because I had never seen that side of him.

Not once.

He was always calm.

Always steady.

But in this video…

He looked afraid.

A second person entered the frame.

Victor.

My heart dropped.

The two men stood several feet apart.

Their conversation couldn’t be heard.

But their body language told a story.

Daniel was angry.

Victor was desperate.

Then Victor grabbed Daniel’s arm.

Daniel pulled away.

The video froze.

A new audio file began playing.

A recording.

Daniel’s voice came first.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Victor answered.

“I was trying to fix it.””

“Fix what?””

A pause.

Then Victor said:

“The deal.””

My blood ran cold.

The room became completely silent.

The recording continued.

Daniel’s voice was sharp.

“You made a deal with them?””

“I didn’t give them anything.””

“You don’t know that.””

“Daniel—”

“No.””

A long silence.

Then Daniel said something that made me stop breathing.

“If they know what I found, people are going to die.””

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

I looked at Victor.

“What deal?””

He looked down.

“I told you.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You told me you made a mistake.””

I stepped closer.

“You never told me you met with Westbridge.””

Victor swallowed.

“Because I was ashamed.””

“Ashamed?””

I almost couldn’t believe him.

“My husband died.””

His face tightened.

“My children lost their home.””

“I know.””

“And you were ashamed?””

“I was scared.””

The answer was so simple.

So human.

And somehow that made it worse.

Because I understood fear.

I understood wanting to protect yourself.

But Daniel didn’t get that choice.

He died.

Victor lowered his head.

“I thought I could control it.””

Breaker crossed his arms.

“You never controlled anything.””

Victor looked at him.

“You think I don’t know that?””

The anger in his voice surprised everyone.

“I lost my best friend too.””

The room went quiet.

Victor looked at me.

“I know you hate me.””

I didn’t answer.

“But I need you to know something.””

“What?””

“I didn’t kill Daniel.””

The words hung there.

I wanted to believe them.

I wanted to reject them.

But after everything…

I didn’t know what to believe anymore.

Officer Harris stepped forward.

“Explain the deal.””

Victor sat down.

Slowly.

Like his body was finally tired of carrying the truth.

“Westbridge knew Daniel was investigating.””

“How?””

“Because someone inside his company was reporting him.””

“Who?””

Victor looked away.

“I don’t know.””

Breaker’s eyes narrowed.

“You’re lying.””

Victor looked back.

“I don’t know who.””

The difference mattered.

Because he sounded honest.

Officer Harris continued.

“What did Westbridge want from you?””

Victor stared at his hands.

“They wanted Daniel’s evidence.””

“And?””

“They wanted me to convince him to stop.””

“Did you?””

Victor nodded.

“Yes.””

My heart hurt.

“You tried to make him stop?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Victor looked at me.

“Because I thought they were just trying to scare him.””

He swallowed.

“I didn’t know how far they would go.””

Daniel’s warning echoed in my mind.

If anything happens to me…

“You knew he was in danger.””

Victor looked destroyed.

“Yes.””

The word was barely audible.

“You knew.””

“Yes.””

“And you still let him go home?””

Victor’s eyes filled.

“I called him that night.””

The room froze.

“What?””

Victor looked at me.

“I called Daniel.””

The memory returned.

The one the officer mentioned.

The last call.

“You were the last person who talked to him.””

“Yes.””

My voice became quiet.

“What did you say?””

Victor couldn’t answer.

“Tell me.””

He looked at the floor.

“I told him to leave.””

“Leave?””

“I told him to take you and the kids and disappear.””

My breath caught.

“And what did he say?””

Victor closed his eyes.

“He said he couldn’t.””

“Why?””

“Because of the evidence.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Why?””

Victor looked at me.

“Because he thought leaving would put someone else in danger.””

The answer felt exactly like Daniel.

Always protecting someone.

Even when nobody protected him.

I looked at the screen again.

The security footage.

The fear in his eyes.

The man I loved had known he was walking into danger.

And he still did it.

Breaker quietly said:

“Daniel wasn’t investigating Westbridge for money.””

I looked at him.

“He was investigating because he knew someone would get hurt.””

Victor nodded.

“Yes.””

Then something happened.

Something small.

Something I almost missed.

Breaker looked at Victor differently.

Not with anger.

With suspicion.

“You sent this file.””

Victor nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Victor looked at me.

“Because Maya needed to know.””

Breaker’s voice hardened.

“Why now?””

Victor didn’t answer.

“Why?””

Victor looked toward the broken apartment.

Then whispered:

“Because they found the last piece.””

“What piece?””

“The one Daniel hid.””

I felt the brass key in my pocket.

My hand tightened around it.

“What are you talking about?””

Victor looked at me.

“The evidence Daniel collected wasn’t just documents.””

“What was it?””

“A recording.””

“Of what?””

Victor’s face went pale.

“The people responsible.””

A cold silence filled the room.

Breaker stepped forward.

“Who?””

Victor didn’t answer.

“Victor.””

He looked at the ground.

Then said:

“Someone who was supposed to be protecting him.””

My stomach dropped.

“What does that mean?””

Before Victor could answer, every phone in the room buzzed.

Again.

Everyone froze.

Officer Harris looked down.

His face changed.

“No.””

“What?””

He didn’t respond.

He turned the screen toward us.

A message.

From an unknown number.

*YOU FOUND THE KEY.*

My breathing stopped.

Then another message appeared.

*NOW FIND OUT WHY DANIEL CHOSE TO HIDE IT FROM MAYA.*

My eyes moved to Victor.

Then Breaker.

Then the key.

The final message arrived.

And this time there was a photograph attached.

A photograph taken inside our apartment.

Not after the fire.

Before.

A picture of Daniel standing in our bedroom.

Holding something in his hands.

Something small.

Something I recognized immediately.

Because I had seen it every day.

The photo zoomed in.

Daniel was holding my wedding ring.

But he wasn’t looking at it.

He was looking at a hidden camera above our bedroom door.

The message underneath said:

*YOUR HUSBAND WASN’T HIDING EVIDENCE FROM THEM.*

A pause.

May you like

Then:

*HE WAS HIDING EVIDENCE FROM YOU.*
