Surprise

Chapter 1

The sound of my seventieth birthday cake crashing onto the marble floor was louder than the orchestra playing behind me.

White frosting splattered across the gold tablecloth. Three beautiful tiers collapsed beneath their own weight, destroying the delicate sugar flowers my granddaughter had spent hours helping the baker arrange.

For one terrible second, nobody moved.

Then my daughter-in-law smiled.

“Oops.”

Vanessa stood beside the overturned cake stand in her fitted black evening gown, her long ponytail resting perfectly over one shoulder. She looked at the ruined masterpiece as though she had accidentally spilled a glass of water.

I stared at her.

That cake had cost nearly four thousand dollars. More importantly, it represented seventy years of surviving things I had never imagined I could survive.

And this woman had just destroyed it in front of two hundred guests.

“Did you do that on purpose?” I asked quietly.

Vanessa laughed and brushed an invisible speck from her dress.

“Evelyn, please. It's just cake. You're seventy, not five. Are we supposed to call the police because Grandma didn't get to blow out her candles?”

Several guests exchanged uncomfortable glances.

My son, Marcus, stood near the ballroom entrance, looking between the ruined cake and his wife.

“Vanessa, what is wrong with you?” he demanded.

She rolled her eyes.

“Don't start. The stand was in my way.”

I looked at the stand. It had been positioned against the wall, nowhere near the dance floor.

Vanessa had walked across the room specifically to reach it.

She had looked directly at me before placing both hands against its edge.

I had watched her push.

Yet she still expected everyone to believe her lie.

“Today is supposed to be about me,” I said.

“Exactly!” Vanessa snapped. “Everything has to be about you. Your birthday, your stories, your friends, your precious little family traditions. I'm exhausted by it.”

My fingers tightened around the small gold clutch I was holding.

For three years, I had tolerated her insults because Marcus loved her. I had swallowed her complaints at Thanksgiving, endured her whispers at Christmas, and pretended not to notice when she introduced me to people as her husband's elderly mother instead of the woman who had helped build the family business.

But tonight, she had crossed a line.

Vanessa stepped closer and reached toward my arm.

“Now, don't make a scene. Go sit down before you embarrass yourself any further.”

I pushed her hands away.

She stumbled backward, her heels sliding across the frosting scattered on the marble.

Her arms flew upward.

She fell directly into the remains of my birthday cake.

The ballroom erupted with gasps.

Vanessa landed against the ruined tiers, white frosting covering the front of her expensive gown. One hand disappeared into the smashed cake while her perfectly styled hair brushed against the icing.

She stared up at me in disbelief.

“You pushed me!”

“No,” I replied. “I moved your hands away from me. You lost your balance.”

She scrambled to her feet, screaming.

“You old, spiteful woman!”

Marcus started toward us, but I reached down first.

I gathered a handful of soft white frosting from the edge of the ruined cake.

Then I pressed it gently but firmly against Vanessa's cheek.

“Now it's just cake.”

The room went silent.

Vanessa's mouth fell open.

“You're going to regret this!”

“Perhaps,” I answered. “But I doubt I'll regret it as much as you regret what you just did.”

Marcus reached us, his expression torn between anger and disbelief.

“Mom, are you okay?”

“I'm fine, sweetheart.”

He looked at Vanessa.

“Apologize.”

She wiped frosting from her face.

“Are you serious? Your mother just attacked me!”

“You deliberately destroyed her birthday cake.”

“It was an accident!”

Marcus pulled his phone from his pocket.

“Then you won't mind watching this.”

He turned the screen toward the nearest guests.

The ballroom's security cameras had recorded Vanessa approaching the cake, checking whether anyone was watching, and deliberately tipping the stand forward with both hands.

There was no ambiguity.

No accident.

No excuse.

Vanessa's face drained of color.

Marcus stared at her.

“You did this intentionally.”

She opened her mouth, but no words came out.

I adjusted the gold bracelet around my wrist and looked at the guests gathering around us.

“Good,” I said calmly. “The cameras caught everything.”

Marcus turned toward me.

“Mom, why do you sound like you expected this?”

I met Vanessa's terrified gaze.

“Because, sweetheart, I suspected your wife was planning something much worse than ruining my birthday cake.”

Vanessa froze.

I took a small step toward her.

“And tonight, everyone in this room is going to discover exactly what she wanted from our family.”
