Chapter 7

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.
Denise was planning to leave me?
I thought about the tickets scattered across our coffee table.
The secret account.
The forged document.
The false stories she had told Alicia.
Suddenly, everything felt connected.
But suspicion wasn't proof.
I knew that now.
"What makes you think she was leaving?" I asked Anthony.
"Because she told me she was starting a new life."
"Where?"
"She mentioned the Caribbean. Said she had a business opportunity."
I closed my eyes.
"Did she give you a date?"
"No. But she wanted the custody paperwork signed quickly."
I thanked him for speaking with me.
Then I called Raymond.
He listened without interruption.
"Marcus, we need to verify each part independently."
"I know."
"The money transfers may be legitimate. Her travel plans may be unrelated. But the document submitted in your name is serious."
"What should I do?"
"Protect your personal accounts, preserve the evidence, and don't confront her alone about allegations you can't yet prove."
I followed his advice.
Over the next two days, the truth began taking shape.
Bank records showed Denise had been transferring household funds into a business account she controlled.
The bank confirmed the transfers but could not determine whether the underlying transactions had been authorized for marital purposes.
Raymond said that would be addressed during the financial review.
Then we discovered something else.
Denise had paid a deposit on an overseas rental property.
The transaction appeared in a credit card statement from an account she had once asked me to help manage.
I remembered the conversation.
She had claimed the charge was for a surprise anniversary trip.
Now I wasn't sure what to believe.
Raymond obtained records through the appropriate legal process as our separation moved forward.
I also made an appointment with a child therapist for Lily.
Her name was Dr. Naomi Ellis.
Lily resisted at first.
"Am I going because I'm bad?"
I knelt beside her.
"No, sweetheart. You're going because someone hurt your feelings, and you deserve help feeling safe again."
She studied my face.
"Are you going too?"
"I'll be right there."
That seemed to help.
At her first appointment, Lily barely spoke.
She sat holding a stuffed rabbit.
Then Dr. Ellis asked her to draw a place where she felt happy.
Lily drew our backyard.
The swing.
The big oak tree.
Me standing beside the porch.
And Jordan holding a basketball.
Dr. Ellis smiled.
"Who are these people?"
"My dad and Jordan."
"And where are you?"
Lily pointed toward a tiny girl sitting under the tree.
Dr. Ellis leaned closer.
"Why are you sitting by yourself?"
Lily looked down.
"Because if I bother people, they might send me away."
My heart broke all over again.
Dr. Ellis didn't rush her.
She helped Lily talk about what had happened.
Later, she spoke with me about rebuilding trust through predictable routines and reassurance.
I listened carefully.
I would have done anything to erase those words from my daughter's mind.
But healing didn't work that way.
I had to show her, every day, that she was safe.
Meanwhile, Jordan began speaking with Anthony.
At first, their conversations lasted only a few minutes.
Then longer.
Denise was furious when she found out.
She called me one evening.
"You had no right to bring Anthony into this!"
"I didn't. Jordan contacted him."
"And you encouraged it!"
"I told Jordan he deserved honest answers."
"You've destroyed my relationship with my son."
I took a breath.
"Denise, Jordan loves you. But he's allowed to love his father too."
"You don't understand anything."
"Then explain."
She went quiet.
For a moment, I thought she might finally tell the truth.
Instead, she said, "You always choose everyone else over me."
I closed my eyes.
"Protecting children isn't choosing against you."
She hung up.
Three days later, I received an email from Denise's attorney.
She had filed for divorce.
She was requesting a substantial share of our marital assets.
She also claimed I had emotionally mistreated Jordan by canceling his airline ticket.
I read the document twice.
I felt ashamed about hurting Jordan.
I had already apologized.
But I wasn't going to allow Denise to rewrite what happened.
Raymond prepared our response.
We provided financial records, relevant communications, and a factual timeline.
We did not ask Jordan to testify against his mother.
He was a child.
He deserved protection from the adult conflict.
That evening, Jordan called Lily.
I sat nearby while they spoke.
"Guess what?" he said.
"What?"
"My dad wants to take me to a basketball game."
Lily smiled.
"That's cool!"
"Yeah."
He hesitated.
"Do you still think I'm your brother?"
She looked offended.
"Of course."
"Even if our parents aren't married?"
Lily rolled her eyes.
"Jordan, you've been my brother since I was six."
He laughed.
I turned away to hide my tears.
For the first time in weeks, the house felt lighter.
Then my phone vibrated.
A message from Raymond.
Marcus, call me immediately. Denise's attorney has produced a document claiming you consented to the overseas relocation plan.
I stared at the screen.
Another document.
Another signature.
Another decision supposedly made in my name.
May you like
And this time, the paperwork wasn't just about Lily.
It involved Jordan too.
