Surprise

Chapter 2

The video began with Diane standing beside the ballroom entrance, holding a champagne glass and speaking to someone outside the camera's view.

I couldn't hear the conversation clearly from where I stood, but I recognized the moment she turned toward the lobby and pointed directly at me.

Then the footage changed angles.

A second camera showed her approaching me with a smile that had looked almost friendly when I first arrived.

She had greeted me in front of the guests.

She had kissed the air beside my cheek.

She had even asked to hold my son.

I remembered declining politely because he had just fallen asleep.

Now I understood why she had looked so irritated.

On the tablet, Diane's smile disappeared. She stepped close to me, whispered something, and suddenly struck me across the face.

The room erupted with gasps.

Diane lunged toward the tablet.

“Turn that off!”

One of the security officers moved between her and the screen.

“Please step back, ma'am.”

“That's private footage! You have no right to show it!”

Marcus looked at her coldly.

“This is hotel security footage documenting an incident on hotel property.”

Diane pointed at me.

“She provoked me!”

I felt my stomach twist.

Even now, with the evidence playing before everyone, she couldn't admit what she had done.

My son shifted slightly against my chest. I lowered my face and whispered that everything was all right, although I wasn't sure I believed it myself.

My father arrived less than ten minutes later.

Arthur Bennett was sixty-eight, with silver at his temples and the kind of quiet authority that made people turn toward him before he spoke. He wore a dark suit and carried no visible sign of the power he held over the business world.

He didn't look at Diane first.

He came straight to me.

“Nia.”

I broke.

I had spent years convincing myself that I could handle every insult, every cruel remark, every family gathering where I was treated like an unwanted visitor.

But when my father gently touched my uninjured cheek and looked into my eyes, I couldn't keep pretending.

“I'm sorry, Dad.”

His eyebrows drew together.

“For what?”

“For letting it get this far.”

He shook his head.

“You don't apologize for someone else's cruelty.”

He carefully examined my son, making sure he was comfortable and safe, then wrapped one arm around my shoulders.

Only after that did he turn toward Diane.

“Mrs. Bennett.”

Diane straightened immediately.

“Arthur, thank goodness you're here. Your daughter has completely misunderstood what happened.”

My father didn't raise his voice.

“I watched the recording.”

“She was disrespectful.”

“You struck her.”

“I was trying to discipline her!”

The words came out before Diane could stop herself.

Several guests exchanged stunned looks.

My father stared at her.

“Discipline my adult daughter? In a hotel you don't own? While she's holding her newborn?”

Diane's mouth opened, but no answer emerged.

I watched her expression change from indignation to calculation. She was searching for a way to turn the conversation around, just as she had done countless times before.

Then she looked at Marcus.

“You know me. I've brought business to this hotel for years.”

Marcus stood straight.

“And the hotel will review every complaint associated with this incident.”

“Your job depends on pleasing important guests.”

“My job depends on protecting guests and following the law.”

My father nodded slightly at him.

“Thank you, Mr. Reed.”

Marcus looked relieved, but my father wasn't finished.

He turned toward the security officers.

“Preserve the original recordings, including every camera covering the ballroom entrance, reception desk, and service corridor. Make copies for the appropriate authorities. No one is to edit or delete anything.”

“Yes, sir.”

Diane's eyes widened.

“The authorities? This is a family matter!”

I finally spoke.

“You stopped treating it like a family matter when you hit me in public.”

Her expression hardened.

“You ungrateful girl. After everything I've done for Marcus—”

“Enough,” my father said.

The single word silenced her.

Then one of the security officers approached him with the sealed envelope.

“Sir, there's another issue. We reviewed the event authorization, and the billing information doesn't match the name provided by Mrs. Bennett.”

My father opened the envelope.

Inside were printed records showing that Diane had requested access to a restricted corporate account to cover the celebration.

I frowned.

“What account?”

My father looked at me carefully.

“The account attached to the Bennett family foundation.”

My stomach dropped.

That foundation had been established by my grandmother to support newborn care, maternal health, and families who couldn't afford medical treatment. I had helped organize its programs long before my pregnancy.

Diane had no authority over it.

“Why would she use that account?” I asked.

My father examined the documents.

“That's what we're going to find out.”

Diane suddenly stepped toward him.

“Arthur, don't be ridiculous. I can explain every transaction.”

He held up the papers.

“Then you'll have an opportunity to explain them to the people investigating the records.”

Her face became almost gray.

I looked at the document in my father's hand and realized that the slap might have been the least damaging thing Diane had done that evening.

She had wanted to humiliate me in front of two hundred people.

Instead, she had brought the first piece of evidence against herself into the open.

And I had a terrible feeling there was much more to come.
