Surprise

Chapter 7

The first thing I did was make sure Malik couldn't hear my conversation with Rachel.

He was downstairs doing homework with Angela.

I stepped onto the back porch.

"Tell me exactly what they're planning."

Rachel spoke carefully.

"Patricia appears to be helping Denise consult with attorneys about the trust."

I rubbed my forehead.

"Can they remove me as trustee?"

"Not simply because they dislike your decisions."

I exhaled.

"But they may try to make allegations."

I looked toward the house.

"What kind?"

"Financial mismanagement. Failure to act in Malik's best interests. Potential conflicts of interest."

I almost laughed.

I'd spent years protecting that money.

Every account was documented.

Every investment was reviewed.

And I'd never used a dollar for myself.

"Let them look."

Rachel paused.

"Marcus, that's exactly what we should do. Make the records available through the proper process and let the documentation speak."

I nodded.

"Okay."

Over the next week, Daniel completed a preliminary review.

He found no unauthorized withdrawals from Malik's trust.

Every legitimate expense had been documented.

The attempted transfers connected to Denise and Patricia had failed.

But the suspicious paperwork remained.

And some signatures appeared inconsistent with the verified originals.

Daniel prepared a report.

Rachel used it to help protect the trust and respond to any challenges.

Meanwhile, Denise moved into a rented apartment with Kayla and Jordan under arrangements made through our attorneys.

I made sure the children had their belongings.

I didn't blame them for their mother's actions.

Kayla cried when she left.

Jordan hugged Malik.

"Can we still be brothers?"

Malik looked at me.

My chest tightened.

I knelt beside them.

"You two care about each other. That doesn't have to disappear because adults are having problems."

Jordan nodded.

Then he hugged Malik again.

I watched them.

Two boys who'd shared a home for three years.

One had been denied food.

The other had secretly shared his snacks.

And neither deserved to lose a relationship because adults had behaved badly.

After they left, Malik sat quietly on the stairs.

I sat beside him.

"You okay?"

He shrugged.

"I miss Jordan."

I put an arm around him.

"I know."

He looked at me.

"Is it weird?"

"What?"

"Missing somebody whose mom was mean to me."

I shook my head.

"No, buddy. Feelings can be complicated."

He leaned against my shoulder.

I held him.

That evening, I received an email from Malik's school.

Mrs. Carter wanted to share an update.

Malik had eaten lunch every day that week.

He'd participated more in class.

And he'd volunteered to help another student with a math assignment.

I smiled as I read it.

Then I noticed a sentence near the bottom.

"Malik asked whether he could keep a small emergency snack in his backpack, even though he now receives lunch consistently."

My heart tightened.

He was still afraid food might disappear.

I forwarded the message to Dr. Miles.

She suggested allowing him to carry snacks without making it a major issue.

So the next morning, I placed a small basket on the kitchen counter.

It contained granola bars, crackers, fruit cups, and bottled water.

I attached a handwritten note.

FOR MALIK. TAKE WHAT YOU NEED.

He found it before school.

He stared at the basket.

Then he looked at me.

"Is this for me?"

I smiled.

"Yep."

He picked up a granola bar.

"Can I take two?"

"Of course."

His eyes filled with tears.

I stepped closer.

"Buddy, you never have to earn food."

He nodded.

Then he hugged me.

That moment mattered more than any courtroom victory.

But the legal situation continued.

Two weeks later, Denise filed for divorce.

Her attorney requested financial disclosures.

Rachel responded through the proper channels.

Then Denise alleged that I had been emotionally abusive during our marriage.

I stared at the complaint.

It claimed I'd repeatedly shouted at her and isolated her from the family.

I felt sick.

Rachel noticed.

"Marcus, allegations aren't findings."

I nodded.

"I know."

"We'll respond with facts."

I took a breath.

"Okay."

Then she looked at me.

"There's something else."

I braced myself.

"Denise is claiming she acted as Malik's primary caregiver."

I stared at her.

"She wasn't."

Rachel nodded.

"We'll document the actual caregiving arrangements."

I thought about the school records.

The empty lunchboxes.

The teacher's notes.

The camera footage.

And Malik's notebook.

I felt my hands shaking.

"She wants to rewrite what happened."

Rachel looked at me.

"Then we'll preserve the truth."

That evening, I told Angela about the filing.

She shook her head.

"Marcus, don't let her drag you into another argument."

"I won't."

"Focus on Malik."

"I am."

She smiled sadly.

"Then you're doing the right thing."

The following morning, Rachel called again.

This time, her voice sounded different.

Urgent.

"Marcus, the financial investigation has taken a significant turn."

I sat upright.

"What happened?"

"Authorities obtained additional records connected to Heritage Family Holdings."

My heart pounded.

"And?"

"Several transactions appear to involve false authorization documents."

I closed my eyes.

"From other families?"

"Yes."

I gripped the phone.

"How many?"

Rachel hesitated.

"At least four accounts are being examined."

I stared at the wall.

Denise and Patricia hadn't simply targeted Malik.

They may have been part of something much larger.

Then Rachel continued.

"Marcus, investigators want to speak with you."

I took a slow breath.

"When?"

"Tomorrow morning."

I looked toward the kitchen.

Malik was eating breakfast.

Smiling.

Talking to Angela.

For the first time in months, he looked like a normal teenager.

May you like

I felt a quiet determination settle over me.

Whatever happened next, I wasn't going to let anyone steal that peace.
