Chapter 7

The emergency hearing was scheduled for the following week.
I spent the weekend trying not to let Malik see how frightened I was.
Denise had no biological connection to him.
She had never adopted him.
But she had lived in our home for almost three years.
She was claiming that she'd become an important parental figure in his life.
I knew the law didn't automatically give her visitation rights simply because we'd been married.
Olivia explained that her request would face significant legal obstacles.
But she also warned me not to dismiss it.
"Any litigation involving a child can be stressful," she said. "We need to respond carefully."
I nodded.
"What about the evidence?"
"We'll present what's relevant and admissible."
The night before the hearing, Malik came into my bedroom.
He was wearing his basketball pajamas.
"Dad?"
I looked up.
"What's wrong, buddy?"
He stood near the doorway.
"Are they going to make me see Denise?"
My chest tightened.
I moved aside.
"Come sit with me."
He climbed onto the bed.
I put an arm around him.
"Some adults are asking a judge to make decisions. But your feelings matter, and the court will consider the law and the evidence."
He looked frightened.
"What if they don't believe me?"
I swallowed.
"Then we'll keep telling the truth and making sure you have support."
He leaned against me.
"I don't want to go anywhere with her."
"I understand."
For several minutes, we sat quietly.
Then he whispered, "I used to think if I was good enough, she'd love me."
My eyes filled.
"Malik, you were always good enough."
He looked up.
"Even when I made mistakes?"
"Especially then. Everybody makes mistakes."
I kissed his forehead.
"You don't have to be perfect to deserve love."
He hugged me tightly.
I held him until he fell asleep.
The next morning, I walked into court beside Olivia.
Denise was already there.
She wore a cream-colored suit.
Her hair was neatly styled.
She looked calm.
Almost innocent.
Patricia sat behind her.
Victor wasn't present.
Denise glanced at me.
Then she smiled.
I looked away.
The hearing began.
Her attorney argued that Denise had helped raise Malik for nearly three years.
He claimed I had abruptly severed their relationship following a minor disagreement.
He described the birthday cake incident as an unfortunate accident.
I felt my jaw tighten.
Minor disagreement.
Accident.
Those words made my stomach turn.
Then Olivia stood.
She explained that Denise had not adopted Malik and that the request needed to be considered under the applicable legal standards.
She presented evidence of the birthday incident.
The video played.
I watched my son smiling beside his cake.
Then Denise deliberately shoved the stand.
The cake crashed.
Malik's expression collapsed.
I heard him ask why she'd done it.
Then I heard Denise mock him.
My chest tightened.
Watching it again never became easier.
The judge looked toward Denise's attorney.
"Your client characterized this as accidental?"
He hesitated.
"Your Honor, emotions were high."
The judge made a note.
Olivia then presented evidence that Denise had contacted a legal service about placing Malik in residential care without my authorization.
She explained that separate concerns about attempted financial transactions were being investigated.
Denise's attorney objected to some of the material.
The judge considered the arguments.
Not every document was admitted.
But enough information was presented to establish serious concerns.
Then Denise was asked whether she'd taken Malik to Victor Lane's office.
She hesitated.
"Yes."
"Did Marcus authorize that visit?"
"No."
"What was the purpose?"
"Family counseling."
Olivia referred to records from Victor's office.
"Was Victor Lane a licensed child therapist?"
Denise looked uncomfortable.
"I thought he was a consultant."
The judge asked for clarification.
The records identified Victor as a financial consultant.
Not a mental health professional.
Not a family therapist.
Denise's explanation began falling apart.
Then Olivia introduced a copy of an email discussing the possibility of transferring Malik's trust assets into an investment vehicle controlled by Victor.
Denise became visibly tense.
Her attorney objected again.
The judge limited how the document could be used at that stage.
But the overall picture was becoming difficult to ignore.
After hearing arguments, the judge declined Denise's emergency request.
The court found no sufficient basis for ordering immediate contact.
Further legal issues, if any, would need to follow the proper process.
I sat motionless.
Then I slowly exhaled.
Beside me, Olivia whispered, "That went well."
I closed my eyes.
For the first time in weeks, I felt I could breathe.
Outside the courtroom, Denise approached.
"Marcus."
I stopped.
Her face was tight with anger.
"You happy now?"
I looked at her.
"Malik deserves peace."
She stepped closer.
"You made me look like a monster."
I shook my head.
"I didn't make you do anything."
She laughed bitterly.
"You think this is over?"
I didn't answer.
Her eyes narrowed.
"You're going to be alone, Marcus. No woman wants a man who puts his child above everyone else."
I looked directly at her.
"Then I'll stay alone."
For a moment, she seemed genuinely stunned.
Then I walked away.
That afternoon, I picked Malik up from school.
He climbed into the car.
"Hey, Dad."
"Hey, champion."
He looked at me carefully.
"Did you go to court?"
I nodded.
"Yes."
He swallowed.
"What happened?"
I smiled gently.
"The judge didn't order you to see Denise."
His shoulders relaxed.
"Really?"
"Really."
He stared at me.
Then he smiled.
It was the biggest smile I'd seen in months.
"Can we get ice cream?"
I laughed.
"Absolutely."
We drove to his favorite shop.
He ordered chocolate with extra sprinkles.
I ordered vanilla.
We sat outside in the sunshine.
For twenty beautiful minutes, we were simply a father and son eating ice cream.
No lawyers.
No accusations.
No fear.
Then my phone vibrated.
Rachel.
I answered.
"Marcus, Victor Lane has agreed to provide a formal statement."
My heart began pounding.
"About what?"
"About the trust documents."
I glanced at Malik.
He was licking chocolate from his spoon.
Rachel continued.
"Victor says Denise knew the proposed transfer wasn't authorized."
I closed my eyes.
"Will he testify?"
"His cooperation agreement is still being negotiated."
I took a breath.
Then she said something that made my heart race.
"Marcus, Victor also claims Denise had a separate plan."
My stomach tightened.
"What plan?"
Rachel hesitated.
"She was preparing to leave the state with Malik if the financial guardianship petition succeeded."
I stared at the road.
For several seconds, I couldn't speak.
My son sat beside me, completely unaware of how close his life had come to being changed.
I looked at him.
He smiled.
"Everything okay, Dad?"
I forced myself to smile back.
"Yeah, buddy."
May you like
Then I reached across the table and held his hand.
Because suddenly, I understood how much worse things might have become.
