Chapter 3

The first police officer arrived eight minutes later.
By then, Maya had stopped crying loudly.
That worried me.
She was sitting between Danielle and me, holding a broken gold feather in her hand.
Every few seconds, she looked toward the auditorium doors.
As though she expected Vanessa to come back and hurt her again.
I wanted to take her home.
I wanted to put her in her favorite pajamas, make her hot chocolate, and tell her the nightmare was over.
But it wasn't over.
Not even close.
“Mr. Carter?”
A female officer approached us.
Her name tag read HARRIS.
“I understand your daughter may have been assaulted.”
I nodded.
“Yes, ma'am.”
Officer Harris knelt to Maya's level.
“Hi, sweetheart. I'm Officer Harris. You don't have to tell me everything right now. I just want to make sure you're safe.”
Maya looked at me.
I squeezed her hand.
“You can talk to her, baby.”
Maya whispered, “My shoulder hurts.”
I immediately pulled the jacket aside.
There was a red mark near her collarbone.
A small bruise was beginning to form.
I felt my anger return.
Officer Harris examined the mark without touching it.
“We should have a medical professional look at that.”
I nodded.
“Absolutely.”
Across the hallway, Vanessa was arguing with another officer.
“This is harassment! My husband sits on the school board!”
The officer remained calm.
“Ma'am, I need you to lower your voice.”
“You have no idea who you're dealing with.”
I stood.
Vanessa saw me and pointed.
“This man is trying to destroy my family!”
I walked toward her.
“My daughter is sitting over there with bruises because of you.”
Vanessa's mouth opened.
No words came out.
Then the auditorium doors swung open.
Rachel hurried inside.
Her hair was disheveled.
Her cream blouse matched the woman in the recording.
The silver bracelet still hung around her wrist.
“Maya!”
She rushed toward our daughter.
Maya immediately hid behind Danielle.
I saw Rachel stop.
The expression on her face almost made me pity her.
Almost.
“Baby, it's Mommy.”
Maya shook her head.
“Please don't.”
Rachel froze.
I stepped between them.
“Give her some space.”
Rachel stared at me.
“Marcus, she's my daughter.”
“Then you should have protected her.”
Tears filled her eyes.
“I know.”
I looked at her bracelet.
“You went to that dressing room.”
She nodded slowly.
“Yes.”
“You watched Vanessa rip her costume.”
Rachel covered her mouth.
“Yes.”
“You watched her pour paint on our daughter.”
“Marcus, I tried—”
“Don't.”
My voice cracked.
“Don't tell me you tried.”
Rachel began sobbing.
“I told Vanessa to stop.”
“After she did it?”
Rachel said nothing.
I felt something inside my marriage disappear.
Officer Harris approached us.
“Mrs. Carter, I need to speak with you.”
Rachel wiped her eyes.
“Am I under arrest?”
“Not at this time. We need your statement.”
Rachel looked toward the auditorium entrance.
I followed her gaze.
Richard Coleman had just arrived.
He was wearing a charcoal suit and carrying a leather briefcase.
Two men followed him.
I recognized one as the school's attorney.
Richard didn't look concerned about Maya.
He didn't even look at her.
He walked straight toward Principal Bennett.
“Arthur, I think this has gone far enough.”
Principal Bennett stood firm.
“Richard, a child was harmed on school property.”
“And we can handle that internally.”
“There is video evidence.”
Richard smiled.
“Security footage is school property.”
I stepped forward.
“Not anymore.”
He turned.
“Marcus.”
His smile remained.
“I understand you're upset.”
“You understand nothing.”
“I sympathize with your daughter. Truly.”
He glanced toward Maya.
It lasted less than a second.
“However, public accusations can have consequences.”
I took another step.
“Are you threatening me?”
“I'm advising you.”
Richard lowered his voice.
“You're a successful man. You have a business, a mortgage, employees. Don't let emotions ruin what you've built.”
My construction company employed fourteen people.
We had recently submitted a major bid for a city development project.
Richard's investment group was one of the financial partners.
Suddenly, I understood.
“You're threatening my company.”
He smiled again.
“I didn't say that.”
“You didn't have to.”
Rachel hurried between us.
“Marcus, please.”
I turned toward her.
“Is that why you let them hurt Maya?”
She looked away.
“Richard said the promotion depended on the school fundraising partnership.”
I stared at her.
“What?”
Vanessa's family had donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to the school's arts program.
Rachel worked as a senior director at Richard's real estate firm.
She had spent years trying to become a partner.
I knew how badly she wanted that position.
But I never imagined she would trade her daughter's safety for it.
Rachel grabbed my arm.
“Please understand. Richard told me Vanessa was only going to speak to Maya.”
“And when Vanessa started ripping her clothes?”
Rachel's tears spilled over.
“I froze.”
I pulled away.
“Maya needed you.”
“I know!”
“No, Rachel. You don't.”
Richard stepped closer.
“This conversation should end.”
Officer Harris raised her hand.
“Sir, I'm going to need you to step back.”
Richard's smile vanished.
He wasn't used to being told no.
Principal Bennett approached with his phone.
“We have preserved copies of both recordings.”
The attorney beside Richard stiffened.
Richard looked sharply at him.
Then Bennett continued.
“And I have already provided the officers with the relevant footage.”
Richard's jaw tightened.
For the first time, he seemed genuinely worried.
I wanted to know why.
The answer came from a voice behind me.
“Because the recording doesn't just show Vanessa.”
I turned.
Danielle was standing beside Maya.
In her hand was her own phone.
She looked pale.
“What do you mean?” I asked.
Danielle approached slowly.
“I work in digital investigations, Marcus. You know that.”
My sister had spent ten years helping attorneys recover electronic evidence.
She had started her own forensic consulting firm two years earlier.
“I asked Principal Bennett to let me review the video while you were talking to the officer.”
Richard immediately spoke.
“That was unauthorized.”
Danielle ignored him.
“There are two recordings. One from the hallway, one from inside the dressing room.”
I swallowed.
“Okay.”
“The hallway recording shows Vanessa and Rachel entering.”
“We know.”
“But the second recording begins earlier.”
Danielle turned her phone toward me.
A frozen image filled the screen.
Maya stood in front of a dressing-room mirror.
She was smiling.
Her beautiful costume was still perfect.
Behind her stood Lily.
I frowned.
“Lily was in there?”
Danielle nodded.
“Watch.”
She pressed play.
Lily was holding a folded piece of paper.
She approached Maya.
Even without sound, I could see she was crying.
Maya hugged her.
My heart tightened.
Then another person appeared in the doorway.
A man.
Richard.
I looked up at him.
His face had gone completely still.
Danielle whispered, “He was there before Vanessa.”
Richard suddenly turned toward the exit.
Officer Harris called after him.
“Sir, I need you to remain here.”
But Richard kept walking.
And when Danielle played the next few seconds, I understood why.
Richard was pointing angrily at my daughter.
Then he leaned down and said something directly into her face.
Something that made Maya recoil.
Danielle turned up the audio.
Richard's voice filled the hallway.
“Your father will lose everything if you don't give Lily that solo.”
I felt the world tilt.
My eight-year-old daughter had been threatened by a grown man.
And that man was now trying to walk away.
I started toward him.
“RICHARD!”
He stopped.
Every parent in the hallway turned.
I pointed toward Maya.
“You threatened my little girl?”
Richard looked at the officer.
“I want my attorney.”
I stared at him.
And in that moment, I made myself a promise.
No matter how powerful he was.
No matter how much money he had.
May you like
No matter what it cost me.
He was going to answer for what he had done.
