Chapter 4

The Woman Behind the Second Name
I didn't confront Vanessa in the hallway.
Every part of me wanted to.
I wanted to demand answers.
I wanted to ask how she could watch Maya struggle to breathe and still think about money.
But I remembered Daniel's warning.
Secure the evidence first.
Protect Maya.
Then let the truth speak.
I returned to the examination room and sat beside my daughter.
She had finally fallen asleep.
Her breathing was steady.
Her small hand rested against the blanket covering her knees.
I watched her chest rise and fall.
For the first time that morning, I felt myself breathe normally.
Then Nurse Evelyn entered quietly.
"Marcus?"
I looked up.
"Yes?"
"Can we talk outside?"
I hesitated.
She smiled gently.
"Another nurse will stay with Maya."
I nodded.
We stepped into a small consultation room.
Evelyn closed the door.
Then she placed a printed record on the table.
"The pharmacy has confirmed some information directly with our medical team."
My heart tightened.
"What information?"
"The medication packet was collected under an authorization associated with Olivia Bennett."
I nodded.
"I know."
Evelyn studied me.
"Do you know Olivia?"
I swallowed.
"She's supposedly my wife's cousin."
Evelyn's expression changed.
"Supposedly?"
I explained what Daniel had discovered.
The trust documents.
The proposed trustee appointment.
The suspicious phone calls.
Evelyn listened carefully.
Then she said something that made my stomach twist.
"Marcus, Olivia Bennett is also listed as an emergency contact in one of Maya's recently submitted records."
I stared.
"What?"
Evelyn turned the page.
"Vanessa submitted an update to Maya's contact information two weeks ago."
I felt cold.
"Without telling me?"
Evelyn nodded.
"Your name was still listed, but another number had been added with instructions to contact Olivia if Vanessa couldn't be reached."
I stared at the paper.
The phone number was unfamiliar.
But the handwriting on the accompanying form looked like Vanessa's.
I knew it immediately.
My hands began shaking.
"Why would she do that?"
Evelyn didn't answer.
Neither of us needed to.
Someone had been creating a paper trail.
A record suggesting Olivia had authority over Maya's care.
And if I had signed the financial documents, Olivia might have gained control over parts of Maya's inheritance too.
I felt sick.
"Can I get copies?"
Evelyn nodded.
"The clinic will provide records through the proper process."
I thanked her.
Then I called Daniel.
He answered immediately.
"Marcus?"
"Olivia is listed in Maya's medical records too."
Silence.
Then he said, "That strengthens my concern."
I leaned against the wall.
"What have you found?"
Daniel took a breath.
"Olivia Bennett isn't Vanessa's cousin."
I froze.
"What?"
"At least, I haven't found any family connection."
My stomach tightened.
"Then who is she?"
"She runs a financial advisory company."
I waited.
Daniel continued.
"Vanessa worked for that company before you married."
I felt cold.
"She told me she worked in event planning."
"She did, briefly. But before that, she worked in financial administration."
I closed my eyes.
Another lie.
Daniel continued.
"Marcus, Olivia's company has been named in several civil complaints involving disputed trust arrangements."
My heart pounded.
"Fraud?"
"Allegations of improper transfers and misleading financial advice. I'm reviewing the records carefully."
I nodded.
"What should I do?"
"Preserve every message and document. I'll coordinate with the appropriate authorities."
I looked toward the examination room.
"And Maya?"
"Stay with her."
My voice broke.
"I will."
When I returned, Vanessa was standing beside Maya's bed.
My daughter was awake.
And frightened.
Vanessa leaned close to her.
I couldn't hear the first part of what she said.
But I heard the last sentence.
"You know what happens when people tell stories."
My blood ran cold.
"Step away from my daughter."
Vanessa spun around.
"Marcus!"
I crossed the room.
Maya immediately reached for me.
I moved beside her.
"Are you okay, sweetheart?"
She nodded.
But her eyes were filled with tears.
I turned toward Vanessa.
"What were you saying to her?"
Vanessa forced a smile.
"Just reassuring her."
I stared at her.
"She doesn't look reassured."
Vanessa folded her arms.
"You're overreacting."
I shook my head.
"No."
My voice was steady.
"Not anymore."
Nurse Evelyn entered.
She looked toward Vanessa.
"Mrs. Bennett, the physician needs some additional information from you."
Vanessa hesitated.
"About what?"
"About Maya's treatment before arrival."
Vanessa glanced toward me.
Then Maya.
"I already explained everything."
Evelyn remained calm.
"We need to document the timeline."
Vanessa looked irritated.
Then she followed Evelyn outside.
The moment the door closed, Maya began crying.
"Daddy."
I sat beside her.
"What is it?"
"Vanessa said I'm going to get her in trouble."
My chest tightened.
I held her hand.
"Her choices are not your responsibility."
Maya looked confused.
"But she said families don't tell secrets."
I swallowed.
"Some things are private, sweetheart. But nobody should ask you to hide something that makes you unsafe."
She nodded slowly.
Then whispered, "I was scared."
I gathered her into my arms.
"I know."
She cried against my shoulder.
"I'm sorry."
I pulled back.
"Don't apologize."
Her face crumpled.
"I thought you wouldn't believe me."
I felt tears rising.
"Why?"
She looked down.
"Because Vanessa said you'd choose her."
The words nearly broke me.
I held her face gently.
"Maya, look at me."
She raised her eyes.
"You are my daughter."
I swallowed.
"You are my first responsibility."
She began crying again.
"And nothing changes that."
We held each other until she calmed down.
Then my phone vibrated.
A message from Daniel.
I opened it.
There was an attachment.
A copy of an old business registration.
VANESSA CARTER.
OLIVIA BENNETT.
Both names appeared as officers of a dissolved company.
I stared.
The business had closed four months before Vanessa and I met.
Its name was Heritage Family Asset Solutions.
I scrolled further.
Then I saw another document.
A complaint filed by a family in North Carolina.
They alleged that a relative had been pressured into signing documents while recovering from a medical crisis.
My stomach dropped.
I read the names.
The dates.
The description.
The similarities were impossible to ignore.
Then another message appeared.
Daniel had written:
MARCUS, DO NOT LET VANESSA TAKE MAYA HOME. THERE IS MORE.
I stared at the screen.
My hands shook.
Because I was beginning to understand something terrifying.
May you like
My daughter's medical emergency might not have been the first time Vanessa and Olivia had used a vulnerable person to gain access to money.
And if Daniel was right, Maya might not have been their first victim.
