Surprise

Chapter 6

The next seventy-two hours changed the way I thought about fatherhood.

I had always believed my job was to shield Maya from every hardship.

But now I understood something painful.

I couldn't protect her by hiding the truth.

I had to help her face it.

That morning, Olivia met with Maya and me.

She explained the situation carefully.

"Maya, your father appears to have used documents bearing your signature in connection with his company."

Maya looked pale.

"Am I going to jail?"

Olivia shook her head.

"We don't have evidence that you knowingly participated in fraud. But we need to establish exactly what happened."

Maya wiped her cheeks.

"I didn't know."

"I understand."

Olivia leaned forward.

"Your honesty is important."

Maya nodded.

"I'll tell you everything."

For the next two hours, she described her conversations with Darius.

He had contacted her through social media.

At first, his messages were gentle.

He asked about school.

Her hobbies.

Her dreams.

He apologized for being absent.

Then he began sending expensive gifts.

A designer handbag.

Wireless headphones.

A gold bracelet.

I remembered those gifts.

Maya had told us they came from friends.

I hadn't questioned her.

Now I felt foolish.

But I stayed quiet.

Maya continued.

"He said he wanted to make up for lost time."

Her voice trembled.

"Then he started talking about investing."

Olivia took notes.

"What did he ask you to do?"

"He said he wanted to create a family business account for me."

"Did he explain what that meant?"

Maya shook her head.

"No."

"Did you receive money?"

"No."

"Did you approve transactions?"

"I don't think so."

She looked terrified.

"I just signed the forms he sent."

Olivia nodded.

"Do you still have the messages and attachments?"

Maya unlocked her phone.

"Yes."

I felt relief.

Those records might prove she had been misled.

Olivia reviewed the documents.

Then looked at me.

"Marcus, we need a forensic accountant."

I nodded.

"Whatever it takes."

She turned toward Maya.

"Your father's messages may be important evidence that you were acting under false information."

Maya began crying.

I reached for her hand.

"You're not facing this alone."

She looked at me.

"Even after everything I said?"

I squeezed her fingers.

"Especially now."

Later that afternoon, we met Detective Brooks again.

Maya gave a full statement.

She handed over the messages.

The signed documents.

The details of the attempted college-account transfer.

When the interview ended, she looked exhausted.

I took her to lunch.

We sat in a quiet diner near the courthouse.

She barely touched her sandwich.

"Dad?"

I looked up.

"Yeah?"

"Do you think I'm stupid?"

My chest tightened.

"No."

She stared at her plate.

"I believed everything he said."

I took a breath.

"People who manipulate others often know exactly what those people are hoping to hear."

She looked at me.

"He knew I wanted a father."

I nodded.

"And he used that."

Her eyes filled with tears.

I reached across the table.

"That doesn't make you stupid."

She squeezed my hand.

"It means someone took advantage of your trust."

She looked down.

"I wish I'd talked to you."

"So do I."

Then I smiled gently.

"But you're talking to me now."

She nodded.

For the first time that day, she smiled.

That evening, Nia received a phone call from an unfamiliar number.

She answered while I was helping Maya organize her college paperwork.

I heard her voice change.

"What do you want?"

I looked up.

Nia stood near the kitchen doorway.

Her face had gone pale.

"Don't call this number again."

She ended the call.

I stood.

"Who was that?"

She swallowed.

"Darius."

My stomach tightened.

"What did he say?"

Nia looked toward Maya.

Then back at me.

"He wants to meet."

I shook my head.

"No."

Nia nodded.

"I told him that."

Then she began crying.

"He said he's going to tell Maya something about the past."

I felt cold.

"What?"

Nia lowered her eyes.

"Something about why he left."

I stared at her.

"Does he have something to tell?"

She hesitated.

My chest tightened.

"Nia?"

She sat down slowly.

"Marcus, there's something I've never told you."

I felt my stomach drop.

Not another secret.

Please.

Not another one.

Nia looked at Maya.

"Sweetheart, could you give us a minute?"

Maya hesitated.

Then nodded.

She went upstairs.

I sat across from my wife.

"Tell me."

Nia wiped her cheeks.

"When Maya was four, Darius tried to take her out of state."

I stared.

"What?"

"He said he was taking her to visit his mother."

I waited.

"But I found out he was planning to keep her."

My chest tightened.

"Why?"

Nia looked ashamed.

"His mother had offered him money if he brought Maya to live with her."

I stared at her.

"Money?"

She nodded.

"She wanted custody. Darius thought he could use Maya to get it."

I felt sick.

"What happened?"

"I went to court."

She swallowed.

"I got an emergency custody order."

I looked at her.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

She began crying.

"Because I was afraid you'd think I came with too much trouble."

I stared at the woman I loved.

Fourteen years together.

And she had carried this alone.

I reached for her hand.

"Nia."

She shook her head.

"I know. I should've told you."

I sighed.

"Yes."

Then I squeezed her fingers.

"But you were protecting your daughter."

She looked at me.

"Marcus, Darius has always treated Maya like something he could bargain with."

My chest tightened.

"And now he's doing it again."

Nia nodded.

We sat in silence.

Then my phone rang.

Olivia.

I answered.

"Marcus, we have a development."

"What?"

"The forensic accountant reviewed the business documents."

I stood.

"And?"

"There's evidence the company received money through accounts opened using Maya's identity."

I felt sick.

"How much?"

Olivia paused.

"Nearly six hundred thousand dollars."

My heart stopped.

I stared at Nia.

She looked frightened.

"Marcus?"

I couldn't answer.

Olivia continued.

"We've also found records suggesting several transactions were designed to make Maya appear responsible."

My hands tightened around the phone.

"Can we prove she didn't authorize them?"

"We have strong evidence, but the investigation is ongoing."

I swallowed.

Then Olivia said something that made my knees weaken.

"Marcus, there's another signature on the original incorporation documents."

I closed my eyes.

"Whose?"

She answered.

"Yours."

I stared at the wall.

Someone had not only used Maya's identity.

They had forged mine too.

And the money Darius had been demanding for years suddenly looked like part of something much bigger.

I whispered, "Olivia, what exactly have I been paying for?"

She hesitated.

Then said, "That's what we need to find out before Darius disappears."

I looked toward the stairs where Maya had gone.

My daughter was finally beginning to trust me again.

And I realized the greatest threat to her future wasn't the tuition bill.

It was the financial trap her biological father had built around her name.
