Surprise

Chapter 6

Grace Bell came to the hospital with her notes.

Emily had called from a borrowed phone. She told Grace she no longer trusted the medication Patricia managed for her. She wanted to change the people authorized to speak with her doctors.

“She said she would explain more in person,” Grace told Daniel. “She was careful on the phone. She believed someone might hear her.”

Daniel looked toward me.

“She borrowed your phone?”

I remembered Emily asking to call a repair company while hers charged upstairs. I had handed it to her without a thought.

“Yes.”

Grace showed Emily her notes when Dr. Kim said she was strong enough. Emily read them slowly and nodded.

“I wanted Daniel there,” she whispered.

“I would have come,” he said.

“I know that now.”

She looked at him for a moment. “I didn’t know then.”

He took the words without arguing.

Emily told us what she remembered. After Dr. Perez advised her to pause the new tablets, she tried to ask Dr. Harlan why he had prescribed them. Patricia answered his calls before Emily could speak with him.

Emily began writing down each dose because she sometimes woke feeling far more sedated than she expected. She hid the notebook pages after noticing one had vanished.

“Where did you hide them?” Grant asked.

“In Lily’s old music box. At the top of the closet.”

Patricia had cleared some of Emily’s belongings after the death declaration. Claire had not checked the closet.

Grant went with her to the house. They found several folded pages inside the music box. Emily had recorded nights when Patricia brought tea after she had refused medicine. On one page, she wrote that Dr. Harlan had called her “difficult” when she asked to return to Dr. Perez.

Emily’s hand shook when she saw the copies.

“I thought if I wrote it down, Daniel would believe me.”

“I should have believed you when you told me,” he said.

She closed her eyes. “I’m glad you’re listening now.”

Grant did not ask her to say more that day.

Lily was with Claire’s husband and came after school for a short visit. Emily showed her the small paper heart Lily had tucked beneath her pillow.

“I kept it with me,” she said.

Lily traced the fold. “I can make you a new one.”

“I’d like that.”

For the first time since the funeral, I could picture Emily coming home.

Then Grant called Daniel into the hallway. I went with Emily’s permission.

The hospital investigators had located Dr. Harlan’s medication orders. One order had been changed after Emily stopped responding. A later entry showed an examination for signs of life. The time on that entry did not match the staff’s account or the security footage.

“Could someone have entered it wrong?” Daniel asked.

“That’s possible,” Grant said. “We’re checking who made the change and when.”

He did not tell us what conclusion to reach. I trusted that more than Patricia’s confident explanations.

The following day, Mr. Vale agreed to speak with investigators. He had received an urgent request from Patricia to move the funeral earlier than planned. When he asked about the speed, she said Daniel could not bear to wait.

Daniel had never asked her to change the date.

Vale also described hearing a faint sound during preparation. He thought a latch on the transport case had shifted. He told no one at the time.

When Grant relayed that detail, I had to sit down.

Someone had heard her before I did.

Vale was shaken, and I believed that. Emily had still spent hours inside the coffin after he dismissed the sound.

Daniel called the funeral home and asked that all fees be paused while the records were reviewed. He did not yell. I could hear how hard it was for him to stay steady.

That evening, Patricia appeared at Claire’s house.

Lily was inside drawing a heart for Emily. I went to the porch while Claire called Daniel.

Patricia looked exhausted.

“I heard Emily is telling people I drugged her,” she said.

“She’s telling the doctors what she remembers.”

“You think I wanted my own son to bury his wife?”

“I don’t know what you wanted.”

“I wanted her to get well.”

“Then why did you keep her phone?”

Patricia’s expression changed.

“It was in her bag at the hospital,” she said.

“No one has found it.”

“She must have lost it before then.”

I thought of her leaving the hospital room with a bag. I did not tell her what Grant knew.

Claire opened the door behind me.

“Mom, you need to leave.”

Patricia looked past us into the house.

“Is Lily here?”

“She’s safe,” Claire said. “Go home.”

Patricia started to argue, then saw Claire’s face. She turned and walked to her car.

When she was gone, Lily came out of the kitchen.

“Was Grandma at the door?”

“Yes,” Claire said.

“Does Mommy want to see her?”

“We’ll ask Mommy what she wants when she’s ready.”

Lily nodded and returned to her drawing.

Later, Daniel called. Grant had found Emily’s phone in Patricia’s car during a search she had consented to.

He also found the missing medicine bottle.
