Surprise

Chapter 5: The Night My Father Stole Me

The message stayed on the screen for less than ten seconds.

But Lily felt like she had been staring at it for hours.

*ASK YOUR FATHER WHAT HAPPENED THE NIGHT HE STOLE YOU FROM ME.*

The words were simple.

Too simple.

That was what made them terrifying.

Because they weren’t a threat.

They were a question.

A question that suggested someone else knew a part of Lily’s life that she didn’t.

Ethan immediately took the phone from the table.

“No.””

The word escaped before he could stop it.

Emma looked at him.

“You knew this day would come.””

“I knew he would try to manipulate her.””

“You knew he would tell her.””

Ethan’s silence answered.

Lily watched her father carefully.

Not the man who had taught her how to fight.

Not the man who had protected her.

The man standing in front of her now.

The man who knew exactly what Marcus meant.

“Dad.””

Ethan looked at her.

She had never called him that with uncertainty before.

Never.

But now there was a question hidden inside the word.

“What happened that night?””

Ethan looked away.

The gym suddenly felt too small.

Daniel stood near the wall, his arms crossed.

He looked older than he had minutes ago.

Like fifteen years had finally caught up with him.

Emma whispered:

“Tell her.””

Ethan didn’t respond.

“Ethan.””

Still nothing.

Lily stepped closer.

“Please.””

That word broke something.

Because Ethan could face anger.

He could face hatred.

He could face Marcus Vale.

But he couldn’t face disappointment in his daughter’s eyes.

He sat down slowly on the bench.

“Fifteen years ago…”

He stopped.

Took a breath.

“Your mother and I were trying to protect you.””

Lily waited.

“You were three months old.””

The number felt strange.

Three months.

She had no memories.

No images.

No understanding.

Just a blank space where her earliest moments should have been.

“Marcus found out about you.””

Emma looked down.

“He believed you belonged to him.””

Lily frowned.

“Why?””

Ethan looked at her.

“Because Marcus didn’t see children as people.””

The answer made her uncomfortable.

“He saw people as extensions of himself.””

Daniel spoke quietly.

“Especially his own family.””

Ethan nodded.

“Marcus believed his skills, his name, his legacy… everything he built should continue through his child.””

Lily looked at the birth certificate still in her hand.

“He wanted me?””

Emma nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Nobody answered immediately.

Then Ethan said:

“Because you were special.””

Lily almost laughed.

“Special?””

The word sounded wrong.

Like something from a story.

“I was a baby.””

“Yes.””

Ethan looked at her.

“And that was the problem.””

She frowned.

“What?””

“Marcus believed talent could be created.””

Emma continued.

“He spent years studying fighters. Training methods. Genetics.

Personality. Everything.””

Lily felt a chill.

“He wanted to create someone who had his ability but not his weaknesses.””

Daniel looked away.

“He wanted a weapon.””

The word sat heavily in the room.

Lily thought about herself.

Her training.

The hours spent practicing.

The lessons about control.

The quiet mornings with her father correcting her stance.

She had always believed martial arts were about confidence.

Discipline.

Respect.

But now she wondered.

Had Ethan been preparing her for something?

Or protecting her from something?

“You trained me because of him.””

Ethan immediately shook his head.

“No.””

“But you knew.””

“I knew what he wanted.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

Ethan went quiet.

And Lily understood.

He had known.

Not everything.

But enough.

Enough to make decisions for her.

Enough to hide the truth.

Enough to build a life around a secret.

“I was scared,” Ethan finally said.

The confession surprised her.

Her father rarely admitted fear.

“I had never been afraid of a person before.””

He looked at the floor.

“But Marcus wasn’t just a person.””

Emma watched him.

“He was obsessed.””

Ethan nodded.

“He followed us for weeks.””

Lily listened.

“Everywhere we went, there were signs.””

“Signs?””

“Things moved.””

“People asked questions.””

“Someone always seemed to know where we were.””

His hands tightened.

“Then one night, we realized we couldn’t run anymore.””

The gym became silent.

“The night you disappeared.””

Ethan looked at Emma.

She nodded.

“Yes.””

Lily looked between them.

“What happened?””

Emma closed her eyes.

“I was supposed to leave with you.””

The words surprised Lily.

“Supposed to?””

“Yes.””

She looked at Ethan.

“But we were separated.””

“Why?””

Ethan answered.

“Because Marcus found us.””

A quiet fear entered Lily’s chest.

“Found us where?””

“At home.””

The answer was immediate.

Too immediate.

Ethan looked like he was back there.

Back in that moment.

“You were sleeping.””

His voice became softer.

“You had no idea anything was happening.””

Lily imagined it.

A baby sleeping.

Adults whispering.

Danger outside.

“I woke up because your mother screamed.””

Emma looked down.

“I had never heard Ethan sound like that before.””

“Like what?””

“Terrified.””

Lily looked at Ethan.

She had never imagined him terrified.

“He told me to take you and run.””

Emma whispered.

“But I refused.””

“Why?””

“Because he was going to stay.””

Lily understood.

“You were going to fight him.””

Ethan nodded.

“I thought I could stop him.””

Daniel sighed.

“You thought you could handle Marcus alone.””

Ethan looked at him.

“I had to.””

“No.””

Daniel’s voice sharpened.

“You chose to.””

The room became tense.

Lily looked at Daniel.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel looked at Ethan.

“He always did this.””

“Did what?””

“Protected everyone else by deciding everything himself.””

Ethan’s expression hardened.

“Not now.””

“Yes, now.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Because she deserves the whole truth.””

Lily watched them.

The same argument.

The same pain.

Like two people who had been waiting fifteen years to finish a conversation.

Daniel continued.

“That night, Ethan sent Emma away with Lily.””

Lily looked at Ethan.

“Why?””

“Because Marcus wanted me.””

The answer was simple.

Terrifyingly simple.

“He knew Marcus wouldn’t stop looking for you.””

Ethan nodded.

“If Marcus believed I had Lily, he would follow me.””

Emma whispered:

“And if Marcus believed I had Lily, he would follow me.””

Lily’s eyes widened.

“So you both separated.””

“Yes.””

Ethan looked at her.

“That was the plan.””

“What happened?””

A long pause.

Then Ethan said:

“We failed.””

Lily felt her heart drop.

“What do you mean?””

Emma looked away.

“Marcus found us.””

The room froze.

“He found you?””

Emma nodded.

“He found me.””

Lily swallowed.

“What did he do?””

Emma’s face changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

“He tried to take you.””

Nobody moved.

“He said you belonged to him.””

Lily stared.

“He tried to take me?””

“Yes.””

Emma’s voice broke.

“And Ethan arrived.””

Lily looked at him.

“You saved me.””

Ethan didn’t answer.

Not immediately.

Then:

“Yes.””

The answer should have made her feel better.

But something was missing.

Something about his face.

“Then why does he say you stole me?””

Ethan looked down.

Because that was the part he didn’t want to say.

Emma answered.

“Because after that night…”

She stopped.

“After what?””

Emma looked at Ethan.

“You took Lily.””

Ethan’s face changed.

“Emma.””

“No.””

Her voice became firm.

“She needs to know.””

Lily looked at her father.

“What did you do?””

Ethan closed his eyes.

“I took you away.””

“From who?””

A painful pause.

“From everyone.””

Lily stared.

“What?””

“I disappeared with you.””

“Why?””

“Because Marcus was still searching.””

“That’s not an answer.””

Ethan looked at her.

“I was afraid.””

The honesty shocked her.

“I thought if I stayed near Emma, Marcus would keep coming.””

Emma whispered:

“And if he found Ethan, he would find Lily.””

Ethan nodded.

“So I made a choice.””

Lily waited.

“What choice?””

Ethan’s voice became quiet.

“I became the person Marcus hated most.””

The answer confused her.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel spoke.

“It means Ethan let Marcus believe he had taken Lily.””

Lily looked at him.

“What?””

Ethan nodded slowly.

“I wanted Marcus to think I had stolen you.””

“Why?””

“Because Marcus would stop searching for Emma.””

Lily stared.

“You made yourself the villain.””

Ethan looked at her.

“Yes.””

The realization hit her.

He hadn’t just hidden the truth.

He had accepted being hated.

By everyone.

Including her mother.

Including Daniel.

Including Marcus.

So Lily could grow up safe.

“But you told me my mother was gone.””

Ethan’s eyes filled.

“I thought she was.””

Emma looked at him.

“We both thought the other was dead.””

Lily looked between them.

“Then why didn’t you find each other?””

The silence was immediate.

And painful.

Daniel answered.

“Because someone made sure we couldn’t.””

Everyone looked at him.

“What do you mean?””

Daniel stepped closer.

“The night everything happened, there was another person there.””

Ethan’s expression changed.

“Daniel.””

“No more secrets.””

Daniel looked at Lily.

“Someone helped Marcus.””

Lily felt cold.

“Who?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then he said:

“Someone we trusted.””

Emma’s face went pale.

“No.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

Ethan stood.

“Stop.””

But Daniel continued.

“Your father spent fifteen years protecting you from Marcus.””

He looked at Lily.

“But he never told you the reason Marcus found you in the first place.””

Lily looked at Ethan.

Her voice was barely a whisper.

“What reason?””

Ethan didn’t answer.

Daniel did.

“Because someone inside your family betrayed them.””

The words hit harder than anything else.

“Family?””

Lily repeated.

“Yes.””

Daniel looked at Ethan.

“And Ethan knows who.””

Lily turned toward her father.

“Dad?””

Ethan looked away.

That was enough.

She knew.

There was another secret.

Another name.

Another person.

“Who was it?””

Ethan remained silent.

“Dad.””

Finally, he whispered:

“Your grandfather.””

Lily froze.

“My grandfather?””

Ethan nodded.

“Your mother’s father.””

Emma covered her mouth.

Because even after fifteen years, saying it out loud still hurt.

“He gave Marcus information.””

Lily felt dizzy.

“Why?””

Ethan’s expression darkened.

“Because he believed Marcus could make your family powerful.””

The pieces started connecting.

The secrets.

The fear.

The training.

The lies.

But one question remained.

“Where is he now?””

Nobody answered.

Then Ethan’s phone buzzed again.

Everyone looked.

Another message.

This time, it was a photo.

Ethan opened it.

And the color drained from his face.

Lily stepped closer.

“What is it?””

Ethan didn’t want her to see.

But it was too late.

The image showed an old man sitting in a dark room.

His face was bruised.

His hands were tied.

Below the picture was a message.

*YOU HAVE SOMETHING I WANT.*

A second message appeared.

*BRING ME MY DAUGHTER.*

Lily stared.

“My daughter…”

She looked at Ethan.

Then at Emma.

Then back at the screen.

Because whoever sent the message wasn’t talking about Emma.

They were talking about her.

And at that moment, Ethan finally understood.

Marcus Vale was no longer searching for Lily.

May you like

He had already found her.

He was coming to take her back.
