Chapter 4: The Father Who Chose Me
For several seconds, Lily forgot how to breathe.
The woman standing in the doorway looked exactly like the person Lily had spent her entire life missing.
Same eyes.
Same gentle expression.
Same small scar near her eyebrow from the photograph on her bedroom shelf.
But the words coming from her mouth felt impossible.
“I should have told you sooner…”
The woman’s voice cracked.
“…that Ethan Carter is not your father.””
The sentence didn’t make sense.
Lily stared at her.
Then at Ethan.
Then back at the woman.
“No.””
The word came out automatically.
Not angry.
Not loud.
Just a refusal.
A rejection of something too painful to accept.
The woman took one step forward.
“Lily—”
“No.””
Lily backed away.
Her fingers tightened around the old photograph.
“No, that’s not true.””
Ethan looked like he had been waiting fifteen years for this exact moment.
And somehow, he still wasn’t ready.
“Emma…”
The woman looked at him.
Her eyes filled with pain.
“I’m sorry.””
Ethan’s expression changed.
Not rage.
Not hatred.
Something worse.
Betrayal.
“You came back after fifteen years,” he whispered, “and that’s the first thing you tell her?””
Emma lowered her eyes.
“Because she deserves the truth.””
“She deserved a mother.””
The words hit the room like a punch.
Everyone went silent.
Even Daniel.
Emma closed her eyes.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
Ethan’s voice was still controlled.
But Lily could hear the pain underneath.
“You don’t know what it was like.””
Emma looked at him.
“I know exactly what it was like.””
“No.””
Ethan shook his head.
“You don’t.””
Lily had never seen him like this.
Her father was always patient.
Always careful.
Always the person who chose words instead of anger.
But now every sentence sounded like it had been locked away for years.
“I watched her grow up without you,” Ethan said.
Emma’s face fell.
“I know.””
“I learned how to braid her hair because she hated when it covered her eyes.””
Lily froze.
She remembered.
She was five years old.
Her father sitting behind her on the bathroom floor, struggling terribly with a simple braid.
She had laughed for almost ten minutes.
“I learned which stories she liked before bed.””
His voice shook.
“I learned that she hates tomatoes but pretends she doesn’t because she knows I put them in pasta.””
Lily’s eyes burned.
“And I learned how to be enough for her.””
Silence.
Emma looked away.
Because there was no argument against that.
Ethan had been there.
Every morning.
Every birthday.
Every nightmare.
Every school event.
Every moment when Lily needed someone.
The woman who gave her life had been gone.
The man who raised her had stayed.
Lily finally spoke.
“Then why?””
Everyone looked at her.
Her voice trembled.
“Why did you let me believe you were my father?””
Ethan turned toward her.
For a moment, he looked terrified.
Not because she knew.
Because he was afraid of losing her.
“Because I am your father.””
Lily swallowed.
“But not my real father.””
Ethan looked down.
And that small movement hurt more than any answer.
Emma stepped forward.
“Lily, please listen.””
Lily looked at her.
“I don’t know you.””
The words were quiet.
But they cut deeply.
Emma nodded slowly.
“I know.””
“You’re my mother.””
“Yes.””
“But you left.””
Emma’s eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Nobody moved.
Nobody interrupted.
Because that was the question that had been waiting fifteen years.
Emma looked at Ethan.
Then Daniel.
Then finally Lily.
“Because someone was trying to kill you.””
The room went still.
Tyler’s face changed.
Daniel stood straighter.
“What?””
Emma looked at him.
“You heard me.””
Ethan stepped forward.
“Emma.””
“No.””
Her voice became stronger.
“She needs to know.””
Lily looked between them.
“Someone was trying to kill me?””
Emma nodded.
“You were a baby.””
A painful memory crossed her face.
“You don’t remember.””
Lily whispered:
“What happened?””
Emma took a deep breath.
“Your biological father was a man named Marcus Vale.””
The name meant nothing to Lily.
But it clearly meant something to Ethan and Daniel.
Daniel’s face turned pale.
“Marcus?””
Emma nodded.
“Yes.””
Ethan looked away.
Lily noticed.
“You know him.””
Nobody answered.
That was becoming a pattern.
A terrible pattern.
Finally, Ethan said:
“Yes.””
“Who is he?””
Emma looked at Lily.
“He was the reason I disappeared.””
Lily waited.
“He was the most talented fighter I had ever seen.””
Daniel spoke quietly.
“And the most dangerous.””
Emma nodded.
“Marcus didn’t believe skill was meant for discipline.””
She looked at Lily.
“He believed skill meant power.””
A chill moved through the room.
“He wanted control,” Emma continued.
“Over people. Over organizations. Over anyone who could challenge him.””
Lily looked at Ethan.
“And you fought him?””
Ethan didn’t answer.
Daniel did.
“We all did.””
The word surprised her.
“We?””
Daniel looked down.
“Ethan, Emma, and me.””
Lily stared.
The three people connected to her biggest secrets had once been a team.
Then something destroyed them.
“What happened?””
Emma’s expression became distant.
“Marcus discovered I knew what he was planning.””
“What was he planning?””
Emma hesitated.
Then:
“To create an organization of fighters who didn’t follow rules.””
Lily frowned.
“Like criminals?””
Daniel nodded.
“Exactly.””
Emma continued.
“He wanted people who could hurt others without hesitation.””
Lily remembered Tyler.
The way he laughed.
The way he enjoyed making people afraid.
She understood now why her father had always emphasized control.
Because he had seen what happened when people didn’t have it.
“Marcus wanted me to join him,” Emma said.
“But I refused.””
She looked at Ethan.
“Ethan helped me escape.””
Lily looked at her father.
“And my real father?””
Emma’s expression changed.
“He found out.””
The room became silent.
“He came after us.””
Lily’s hands tightened around the photograph.
“What happened to him?””
Nobody answered.
Then Ethan said:
“He disappeared.””
Emma looked at him.
“Not before making sure I couldn’t come back.””
Lily frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Emma looked at Ethan.
And something passed between them.
Something Lily didn’t understand.
Then Ethan spoke.
“Your mother wasn’t the only one who disappeared.””
Lily looked at him.
“What?””
Daniel’s face changed.
“Ethan.””
But Ethan continued.
“After that night, I thought Emma was dead.””
Emma looked down.
“I needed him to believe that.””
Lily’s heart raced.
“You knew she was alive?””
“No.””
Ethan shook his head.
“I knew she might be.””
“Might be?””
He looked at Lily.
“There was no proof.””
Emma whispered:
“I had to stay hidden.””
“For fifteen years?””
Emma nodded.
“Because Marcus was still looking.””
Lily stared.
“But why come back now?””
That question changed everything.
Emma looked toward the gym entrance.
Like she expected someone else to appear.
Then she said:
“Because Marcus found you.””
Ethan immediately moved closer to Lily.
“No.””
Emma looked at him.
“Yes.””
“No.””
His voice became sharper.
“You said he was gone.””
“I was wrong.””
The room froze.
Daniel looked at Emma.
“What happened?””
Emma swallowed.
“Three days ago, I received a message.””
“From who?””
Emma didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
Everyone already knew.
Lily felt Ethan’s hand gently touch her shoulder.
A protective instinct.
The same one he had shown her her entire life.
Except now she finally understood.
It wasn’t just a father protecting his daughter.
It was a man protecting someone he had promised never to abandon.
“What did the message say?”” Ethan asked.
Emma looked at him.
“It said…”
She paused.
Her eyes moved to Lily.
“…that Marcus knew where his daughter was.””
Lily felt cold.
Her daughter.
The words echoed.
Not Ethan’s daughter.
Marcus’s daughter.
Emma reached into her coat pocket.
She pulled out a small envelope.
“I brought this because I knew you would need proof.””
Ethan looked at the envelope.
“What is it?””
Emma handed it to Lily.
Inside was a document.
An old birth certificate.
Lily looked down.
Her eyes moved across the page.
Her name.
Her birthday.
Her mother’s name.
And below it…
A name she had never seen before.
Father:
Marcus Vale.
The room blurred.
She looked up at Ethan.
He looked devastated.
Not because the secret was revealed.
Because he knew this moment would hurt her.
“Say something,” Lily whispered.
Ethan opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
“Please.””
Finally, he spoke.
“I didn’t want you to grow up knowing him.””
Lily’s eyes filled.
“You stole the truth from me.””
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised her.
“I did.””
“Why?””
“Because I knew what he was.””
Ethan stepped closer.
“I knew what he did to people.””
His voice lowered.
“And I knew if you ever found out you were connected to him, you might think you were connected to his darkness.””
Lily looked away.
“But I am.””
“No.””
The answer was immediate.
Firm.
“You are not.””
She looked back.
Ethan’s eyes were full of emotion.
“Lily, listen to me.””
“You have his blood.””
“Yes.””
“But you don’t have his choices.””
She stared at him.
“You are not your father’s actions.””
A tear slipped down her cheek.
Because those were the exact words she needed.
But they didn’t erase the pain.
Not yet.
Tyler quietly spoke from the corner.
“So what happens now?””
Everyone looked at him.
For once, Tyler didn’t sound arrogant.
He sounded like a kid.
A scared kid.
Emma looked toward the door.
“Now we prepare.””
Ethan’s expression changed.
“Prepare for what?””
Emma looked at Lily.
And Lily immediately knew.
Whatever came next was about her.
“Marcus isn’t coming back for revenge.””
Emma said.
“He’s coming back to take something.””
Lily’s voice was barely a whisper.
“What?””
Emma looked at her.
“The one thing he believes belongs to him.””
A long silence followed.
Then Emma said the words that made Ethan step forward.
“The legacy of the Vale family.””
Lily frowned.
“I don’t understand.””
Emma’s face turned pale.
“Your training.””
Ethan froze.
Lily looked confused.
“My training?””
Emma nodded.
“Marcus spent his entire life searching for someone who could inherit everything he built.””
Daniel whispered:
“No…”
Emma looked at Lily.
“And when he sees what Ethan taught you…”
She stopped.
Because she didn’t need to finish.
Lily already understood.
The skills.
The discipline.
The control.
Everything her father gave her.
Everything she thought made her different.
Someone else wanted it.
Someone dangerous.
Then Ethan’s phone buzzed.
Everyone looked.
A message had arrived.
No number.
No name.
Just three words.
Ethan read them.
And his face changed.
“What does it say?”” Daniel asked.
Ethan slowly turned the phone around.
Lily looked at the screen.
Her stomach dropped.
Because the message wasn’t for Ethan.
It was for her.
*I KNOW WHO YOU ARE.*
A second message appeared.
*I’LL SEE YOU SOON, LILY.*
And beneath it was a final line.
May you like
One that made Ethan immediately lock the doors.
*ASK YOUR FATHER WHAT HAPPENED THE NIGHT HE STOLE YOU FROM ME.*
