Chapter 1

The electric clippers were already cutting through my daughter's hair when I heard her scream.
“STOP MOVING!”
Susan's voice came from the kitchen.
Then I heard Lily crying.
“Please! Please stop!”
I had just reached the front porch when that second cry made my blood turn cold.
“DADDY!”
I threw the front door open.
What I saw inside our dining room nearly stopped my heart.
My seven-year-old daughter was bent against the dark wooden table.
Susan had one hand pressed against Lily's upper back.
In her other hand, she held a pair of buzzing electric clippers.
A thick strip of Lily's beautiful natural hair lay across the table.
Another uneven patch had already been shaved from the side of her head.
My little girl's face was soaked with tears.
“GET YOUR HANDS OFF MY DAUGHTER!”
I crossed the room before Susan could move.
I caught her wrist and pulled the clippers safely away from Lily.
Susan stumbled backward.
“Marcus! What are you doing?”
I switched off the clippers and put them out of reach.
Then I dropped to my knees beside my daughter.
“Lily, baby, look at Daddy.”
She turned toward me.
Her little body was shaking.
“Daddy!”
I pulled her into my arms.
She clung to my neck so tightly that I could barely breathe.
“Please don't let her do it again.”
My chest felt like it was breaking apart.
“I'm here, sweetheart.”
I held her against me.
“Nobody is touching your hair again.”
Susan folded her arms.
“You're making this ridiculous.”
I looked up.
My wife stood beside the table wearing her elegant black blouse.
Her long straight hair was perfectly arranged.
She looked irritated.
Not ashamed.
Not frightened by what she had done to a child.
I stared at her.
“What did you do?”
She rolled her eyes.
“She needed discipline.”
I looked down at Lily.
Her pink T-shirt was wrinkled.
Her cheeks were wet.
One of her small silver earrings had come loose.
I carefully brushed the remaining hair away from her forehead.
“Discipline?”
My voice sounded strange.
“She's seven years old.”
Susan pointed at the table.
“She refused to listen.”
“So you held her down and shaved her hair?”
“She was being disrespectful.”
I looked at my daughter's trembling hands.
“Lily, did you want your hair cut?”
She shook her head violently.
“No, Daddy.”
Susan sighed.
“Of course she's going to say that now.”
I stood carefully, keeping Lily beside me.
“Don't speak for her.”
Susan looked offended.
“I'm her stepmother.”
“And I'm her father.”
She stared at me.
“Marcus, you can't undermine me every time I correct her.”
I felt anger rising so quickly that I had to force myself to breathe.
“Correcting a child doesn't mean terrifying her.”
Susan stepped closer.
“You weren't here. You don't know what happened.”
I looked at the clippers.
Then at the hair scattered across the table.
“I know what I walked in on.”
Lily pulled at my sleeve.
“Daddy?”
I knelt again.
“Yes, baby?”
Her lower lip trembled.
“She does this when you're gone.”
The room became silent.
I felt a cold sensation spread through my chest.
“What do you mean?”
Lily looked toward Susan.
Her eyes widened with fear.
Susan immediately interrupted.
“She's exaggerating.”
I raised my hand.
“Let her speak.”
Lily leaned close to my ear.
“She gets really mad when you go to work.”
I swallowed.
“What does she do?”
Lily stared at the floor.
“She says I'm bad.”
My heart tightened.
“What else?”
“She makes me stand in the laundry room.”
Susan scoffed.
“That was one time.”
Lily flinched.
I looked at Susan.
“Stop.”
Then I turned back to my daughter.
“You're safe with me.”
Her eyes filled again.
“She said you wouldn't believe me.”
The words hit harder than anything Susan could have shouted.
For months, I had believed our house was filled with love.
I worked long hours running my construction company.
Susan stayed home more often and helped take care of Lily.
I thought I had given my daughter stability.
A mother figure.
Someone to hold her when I couldn't be there.
Now I was beginning to understand why Lily had become so quiet.
Why she stopped inviting friends over.
Why she sometimes cried before I left for work.
I had asked what was wrong.
She always said nothing.
And I had accepted that answer.
I looked at her.
“Baby, I'm sorry I didn't listen better.”
She shook her head.
“It's not your fault, Daddy.”
I felt tears burning my eyes.
Susan stepped forward.
“This conversation is getting ridiculous.”
I stood.
“No. What's ridiculous is that my daughter was afraid to tell me what happened in my own house.”
Susan's face hardened.
“She's manipulating you.”
I stared at her.
“She's seven.”
“She knows how to get attention.”
I looked down at Lily.
My daughter was clutching my shirt.
Her shoulders were still shaking.
I realized something terrible.
Susan wasn't frightened because she had hurt Lily.
She was angry because I had interrupted her.
I took a slow breath.
“Lily, sweetheart, I need to ask you something.”
She nodded.
“Has Susan hurt you before?”
Her eyes immediately filled.
Susan stepped forward.
“Marcus!”
I looked at her.
“Stay where you are.”
Lily stared toward the dining table.
Then her gaze moved lower.
Toward one of the wooden chairs.
I followed her eyes.
Something small was hidden beneath the seat.
A pink phone.
It was the old smartphone I had given Lily for emergencies.
I frowned.
“Baby, is that your phone?”
She nodded.
Susan's expression changed.
Her face suddenly became pale.
I looked back at Lily.
“What happened?”
She whispered, “I recorded her.”
My chest tightened.
Susan took one step forward.
“Give me that phone.”
I moved between her and Lily.
“Don't.”
Susan stared at me.
“Marcus, she's been recording private family conversations.”
I looked down at my daughter.
She was crying again.
But this time, there was something different in her expression.
Hope.
She pointed toward the chair.
“Daddy, please listen.”
I reached beneath the seat.
My fingers closed around the phone.
Susan lunged toward me.
“DON'T OPEN THAT!”
I pulled the phone away.
Then I looked at my wife.
May you like
For the first time since marrying her, I saw fear in her eyes.
And I knew whatever Lily had recorded was going to change our family forever.
