Surprise

Chapter 7

I didn't panic when I saw the photograph.

Not immediately.

Instead, I felt an unexpected calm.

It was the kind of calm I'd learned during my years as a nurse.

When something dangerous happened, you didn't waste time screaming.

You assessed the situation.

You called for help.

And you followed the plan.

I looked at Marcus.

"Call Denise."

He nodded.

I picked up my phone and contacted the police.

Marcus forwarded the messages to the appropriate people.

Then I checked every door.

Lorraine arrived within twenty minutes.

She hugged me tightly.

"Are you okay?"

I nodded.

"I'm frightened, but I'm okay."

Marcus stood near the window.

He looked miserable.

"This is my fault."

I turned toward him.

"You're responsible for your choices. Vanessa is responsible for hers."

He looked at me.

I continued.

"Right now, I need you focused on helping, not drowning in guilt."

He nodded.

"Okay."

The responding officers took the information and documented the messages.

They explained the steps available to address unwanted contact and threats.

Denise helped me pursue further protective arrangements.

I also arranged for better outdoor lighting and a security system.

But I refused to leave my home simply because Vanessa wanted to frighten me.

That evening, Marcus offered to stay.

I considered it.

Then I shook my head.

"Not tonight."

His face fell.

"Mom..."

"I appreciate the offer. But Lorraine is staying with me."

He nodded slowly.

"I understand."

I walked him to the front door.

He hesitated.

"Are you still angry?"

I thought carefully.

"Yes."

He looked down.

"But I'm also glad you're telling the truth."

He nodded.

"That's fair."

I touched his arm.

"Go get some rest."

He hugged me.

I hugged him back.

It wasn't the same easy embrace we'd shared when he was young.

There was pain between us.

Disappointment.

Regret.

But there was also love.

And perhaps that was where healing began.

Three days later, Detective Brooks called.

He asked me to come to the station with my attorney.

Lorraine drove me.

Marcus met us there.

Brooks led us into a small meeting room.

He had several documents on the table.

"We've made progress," he said.

My heart began beating faster.

"About the money?"

"Yes."

He explained that investigators had traced suspicious transactions connected to Willow Ridge Consulting.

They had also obtained records relating to the loan application and proposed property transfer.

I listened carefully.

Brooks continued.

"We've identified additional evidence connecting Vanessa Carter and Brandon Ellis to the attempted financial activity."

Marcus closed his eyes.

I looked at him.

He was shaking.

Brooks spoke directly to me.

"Mrs. Carter, the documentation you've provided has been important."

I nodded.

"What happens now?"

"The case will proceed through the appropriate legal process. We'll update you when we can."

I swallowed.

"Has Vanessa been arrested?"

"Not at this moment."

My stomach tightened.

Brooks continued.

"But the investigation is active, and additional steps are being taken."

Lorraine squeezed my hand.

I nodded.

I didn't want revenge.

I wanted my money protected.

My home secure.

And the woman who'd tried to steal both held accountable.

A week later, Vanessa's attorney contacted Denise.

Vanessa wanted to negotiate.

She offered to repay a portion of the missing money.

In exchange, she wanted me to withdraw my complaint.

Denise explained that I could discuss restitution, but decisions about criminal prosecution belonged to the authorities.

I stared at the proposal.

"She wants to pay me back with my own money?"

Denise sighed.

"The source of any proposed repayment would need verification."

I shook my head.

"No private agreement that hides what happened."

Denise nodded.

"I'll communicate your position."

That afternoon, Marcus called.

"Mom, Vanessa contacted me."

My heart tightened.

"What did she say?"

"She wants me to convince you to accept the offer."

I closed my eyes.

"And what did you tell her?"

"That she needs to speak through the attorneys."

I opened my eyes.

"Good."

He hesitated.

"Mom, she says she still loves me."

I remained quiet.

Then I asked, "What do you believe?"

He took a long breath.

"I believe she loved what she thought I could give her."

My heart ached.

"I'm sorry, Marcus."

He gave a sad laugh.

"I guess I needed to learn."

"Learning shouldn't require losing everything."

"I know."

He paused.

"Do you think I can start over?"

I looked around my kitchen.

At the familiar curtains.

At Thomas's photograph.

At the little bowl of fresh lemons on the counter.

"Yes," I said softly.

"But you have to start with the truth."

He was quiet.

Then he whispered, "Thank you, Mom."

For the first time in weeks, our conversation ended peacefully.

That night, Lorraine and I cooked dinner together.

We made baked chicken and sweet potatoes.

We laughed about the old days.

And just as we were sitting down to eat, my phone rang.

Denise.

I answered immediately.

"Evelyn, I have an important update."

I sat upright.

"What happened?"

"Vanessa and Brandon have been taken into custody in connection with the investigation."

I covered my mouth.

Lorraine stopped moving.

Denise continued.

"The authorities are proceeding with charges involving the alleged financial offenses."

My eyes filled with tears.

I wasn't happy that someone's life was collapsing.

But I felt an enormous weight begin to lift.

Then Denise said something else.

"There's another matter we need to discuss."

My stomach tightened.

"What?"

"Investigators found records suggesting you may not be the only person targeted."

I stared at the wall.

"Another homeowner?"

Denise paused.

May you like

"Several."

And suddenly I realized the truth about Vanessa might be much darker than anything I'd imagined.
